Reading a collection of stories for Arabic class. It's not the fact that we have to read them, it's just that they're such sad and depressing stories.
One especially sad one was about how a guy and a girl from this village in Lebanon decided to marry, and it was all a very happy affair until the husband requested a child. They tried to conceive but the wife wouldn't get pregnant, and so her in-laws took her to several doctors who couldn't find anything wrong with her. So her husband starts drinking and smoking and feeling suicidal, while the in-laws totally treat her like shit and her own family won't even defend her because she's apparently sterile.
Lo and behold, after a short while, the wife is suddenly pregnant. As a result, her husband stops drinking and smoking and generally being a sorry douche, while the in-laws start treating her nicely and with respect. After the wife is five months along, she gives her husband a letter and tells him to open it the next day, when they are supposed to meet at their special tree or whatever. The husband, thinking it was some sort of surprise, agrees to this and sets off the next day to meet his wife at the special tree.
He finds her there dead, having drunk some sort of poison. She was wearing her wedding dress. The husband is in shock and opens the letter, hoping to find some sort of explanation. The wife explains in the letter that she loves him very much, even after he treated her like shit for something that was totally not her fault. She writes that after months of despairing over her husband's behavior, she slept with one of their neighbors and conceived a child, revealing that her husband was actually sterile and not her. She was thrilled that her husband started treating her normally again now that she was pregnant, but the sense of betrayal and hurt she felt was too great, so she killed herself.
Damn, just typing that bummed me out.
