we all have that thing we like, but don't like talking about, because of the other fans of the thing in question, it can be a specific game, or movie, or general interest

EDIT: I ptobably worded this wrong, the fans haven't at all skewed my opinion of the passtime in question but they do make it kind of embarassing to talk about that's all I meant...also I know a lot of you say you don't let fans get to you, but as I said, everyone has one thing, NOBODY is immune to fanbarrasment

for me it's professional wrestling, I love it, in spite of its flaws I just find watching some pro-wrestling to be a great way to unwind (on the whole)

however (WARNING: rant impending) I F**KING HATE wrestling fans... I won't go into too much detail, but there seem to be 2 types of wrestling fan (by the way I'm strictly speaking adults here and to save time I'm just going to rant about WWE fans rather than wrestling fans as a whole)

1. the wrestling fanboy/girl

if you've ever watched WWE. you know that wrestling companies present wrestlers in certain ways and has them act in such a way as to provoke a specific desired reaction from the fans, the mark will react EXACTLY as they are "supposed to" and like everything the show tells them to like and hate everything they're supposed to hate, to use another example, did you ever know someone who found Jar Jar binks funny? or thought "Green Lantern" was "really good" just because the Green Lantern was in it? these are the same types of people, now I'm all for someone's opinion differing from mine, I like a nice debate about certain things but...I don't know somehow this is different, I'm pretty sure these people still don't realise pro-wrestling is a work (remember I'm strictly talking adult wrestling fans here)

2: the "smart" wrestling fan

I have more in common with these folks, wrestling fans who like wrestling in spite, or perhaps because of it's staged nature, now that's all well and good, (and to be fair a lot of them are all right) but there are those among them (basically the only ones I encounter) who just annoy me beyond beleif

basically remember the reaction to "Duke Nukem Forever"? imagine someone reacting that way to EVERYTHING! basically a cynical asshole who barely even mentions the parts of any show that he/she likes and if one thing goes in a way they don't agree with then suddenly the whole thing was a waste of time regardless of how good everything else might have been,

to summarise

basically every single wrestling fan I know is either a complete fanboy who likes everything they're "supposed to" like or a cynical asshole that just complains all the time and refuses to like anything with NO MIDDLE GROUND!

I myself, like some of what I see, not all of it, I don't tend to waste effort getting angry about most of the stuff I don't agree with.

so yeah, what do you like but don't like to admit it because of the fans?

Nothing. I try not to let fanbases get to me.

If I want to like something, I'll like it regardless of who shares that like with me.

Seconded. If something is of quality, then others who enjoy it shouldn't deter you from doing the same.

Thirded (?) Someone else's behaviour shouldn't make you ashamed of enjoying something. Whenever I see someone saying "Oh, I left the fandom because of [insert undesirable behaviour here]" it saddens me that they placed some idiot's inability to respect others above just enjoying what they enjoy.

INB4 Broni... Damnit I can't do that this time!

OT: I agree with Melon, Equestrian and Ljs. Letting other, unrelated people's actions ruin something for you is stupid.

Jar Jar Binks is funny, he gets far too much stick. Nothing, fans haven't ruined anything I like yet. On a somewhat related note I just watched the Psych episode where John Cena guest stars, and I can't believe how big the dude is. He's also a pretty crap actor.

Just thinking that :D

Every time a custscene started playing in Generations, I couldn't stop thinking, 'You know what, I bet somebody, somewhere, is doing something very wrong with these characters...'.

Well, I probably wouldn't care for MLP in the slightest if it wasn't for all that brony business all over the internet. Now whenever I see anything MLP related I automatically have a negative reaction towards it.

Every time a custscene started playing in Generations, I couldn't stop thinking how it could be misconstrued by a Sonic fan :D
No Sonic stop eating the Chilli Dog! Think of the fan art! D:

Why must they ruin something I hold so dear?!

V for Vendetta, specifically V's outfit. I think he looks really cool, and I love the mask, but since it's become the symbol of Anonymous and the Occupy movement it'd be impossible to wear it as a costume.

Portal maybe? Though I can't actually say that anyone's "ruined" anything for me. I just find it annoying that I can't even Flippin' talk about Portal without some moron, as Yahtzee puts it, "braying like a mule if you so much as mention the word cake." Also you can't even begin to know how much I hate the fact that even mentioning to someone (who hasn't played portal) how good/funny the ending song is, results in one of those idiots in the background breaking out into singing (they memorized the whole damn thing?).

Behold, the reason why I prefer to stay the fuck away from brony gatherings, and brony websites in general!

I really like the show, but I despise almost every aspect of the fandom. There's just so much wrong with it. The brony artists who e-beg for donations of their drawings of COPYRIGHTED WORK, the ear-bleeding brony music that often has nothing to do with the show itself and usually consists of electronic warbles repeated for 4 minutes, the embarrassingly bad fan-fiction (don't even get me started on clopfics... oh god, why!), the disturbing sexual deviants known as cloppers, the firestorm over the voice and mannerisms of a blonde-maned and cross-eyed pony, and worse of all, the hideous cosplayers, who are typically overweight, chocolate-gorging college students who have the attractiveness of a rotting apple. The only remotely tolerable brony I've met IRL is my best friend, who's interest in the show is definitely overshadowed by his interest in anime and video games. I still like the show and some fanwork, but I admit there is a disproportionate amount of creeps in the fandom.

Indeed. The only thing fanbases can really do is make me find jokes less funny by spewing them out every couple of minutes.

I still like Portal a lot, but cake jokes are really not funny any more.

Pretty much this. These days I tend to stay as detached as possible from any sort of fandom for the sake of my own sanity. There are things I like, things I love, but those likes and loves are mine and mine alone, I don't need to vastly overstate a tenuous connection to another group of people in order to validate my own preferences, especially if it will only drag me down into the boggy depths of the hooting, whiny, creepy, us-versus-them aggressive fanboy culture that surround pretty much everything I hold dear these days.

World of Warcraft. I can't stand to play the game for 5 minutes without being disgusted by how awful the community is. 5 years ago I was addicted to it more then any kind of drug, now even thinking about it makes my stomach turn and changes my mood negatively.

Huh? No no, you misunderstand. Fans don't ruin anything for me but the perception of fans. That is, they make themselves look like total idiots. Fans - taken from the term fanatic, naturally - makes the point of being overly-obseesed with a thing instead of just enjoying it normally like one should. I like things, even alot, but by god I do not react the same way as other people do.
