Re: the Thunderbolt II (aka Warthog). The A-10 is the world's first and only true ground-support fixed-wing aircraft. The friendly-fire incidents in most recent time were pilot error, not the fault of the plane but the damn pilot who bombed the wrong side. Friendly casualties are to be expected with a vessel like the A-10, but in much less quantity than traditional bombing would cause. The Thunderbolt can loiter on the battlefield low to the ground, traveling at sub-mach speeds. Any non-VTOL jet traveling that slow would crash, but the A-10 can just glide about searching for targets. Its primary asset is that it was designed to target infantry, light vehicles, and tanks; most nations require helicopters for this role but the A-10 exceeds helicopter capabilities.

With the most recent incident, didn't they strafe a convoy of UK trucks? Some mix-up in enemies being reported in the area, but not informing the pilots about the friendlies? Or was that just the pilots story, and other news has come out since then that says otherwise?

The explanation I got in Yr 11 physics is that because it was believed that it was the proton that moved for so long it is just by convention that it is still refered to that way in the electrical industry. But we all know now that it is the eletron tht maves.
