The whole "Let's just be friends" bullshit line and just girls in general.
Well if you ask out a girl who you don't know all too well and they say they just want to be friends, they just don't want to go out with you. It's an easy way to let you down. And if you've been friends with a girl for a while and she says something like that, she really just has no interest in you in that way. I'm sure you've had female friends who you had no intention of ever going out with, it's the same situation.

I don't get why both genders think the other one is so different. There are easy explanations to any problem you have.
Has there ever been a guy who's said to the girl "Let's just be friends"? Even biologically we're way different.
So you're attacted to every single woman you've ever met in your life? There's not a single female friend you have that you wouldn't get into a relationship with? You may have never had to say it to a friend, but maybe girls are just better at telling when the someone else really doesn't want to go out with them, so they never make the attempt.

Two points :
Who said attracted? Who said single? That secondary brain is very hard to bargain with at times. ;)

Seriously, I don't think I've ever been in the position where it had to be made that obvious. Either I'm ugly or good at weeding them out. I hope it's the latter.

I don't understand most of them either... And I am one!

Really, most men are way more complicated than women to me.

I don't get riders. The laws that politicians can stick to any law and if the law gets past the rider gets past, but get this the president can't veto an individual rider without vetoing the whole thing.

You live.

Then you die.

Game over. And no, there isn't any cake.
Speaking of cake, Shivari, I don't see why so many people obsess over the weighted companion cube from Portal.... Is it just that that particular item from the game is a good representative of the game's awesomeness, or is it something else that I am (ashamedly) not aware of?

I don't get it either. It was kinda funny when I had to burn it and all, but I never thought it was anything too sweet. The cake and the song at the end were the only things that were awesome enough to reference. I still say that the cake is a lie whenever there's cake around. It's usually around people who have no idea what that means though.

Jazz music. It never seems to have any structure, sounding like discombobulated elevator music in pretty much every attempt to me. While there are other music genres I don't like, I can generally stand most music for at least a short time. Jazz sounds unpleasant for any stretch. And is usually the background noise for any distinguished establishment. Ugh.

Women who think that guys being attracted to them is sexism. It's men, that's how they're programmed. If that programming gets in your way, then you can bust out the righteous anger.

Most reality show contestants. Unless there's a significant and awesome reward, or they're really talented and passionate about what they're doing. Project Runway, for example, is watchable, as most people on there seem very much in love with their work, but the Apprentice is confusing and makes my head hurt.

And finally, how willfully ignorant some people are willing to be to their own disasters. I've known, lived, worked with and voted for people who are very willing to let the toxic byproducts of their own fuck-ups fester in their backyards rather than just suck it up and try to make good. I respect people more if I see them learning from their mistakes, even when they employ or govern me, and would really like to see it happen more often.

It's not so much the cube itself, it's how it's used by GLADOS to manipulate you into thinking twice about destroying an inanimate object. People are fascinated by the whole mind game, I think, not the cube.

.. didn't help that it had little hearts painted on it though. Or that it saved my ass several times. Or that it screamed when I burned it.

Any fetishes at all. Seriously, every part of the human body looks extremely weird when you think about it. Especially feet. If you have a foot fetish you are a sick, sick person.
You'd better stay far, far away from the Dirty secrets thread. Anyway, calling people sick because of a fetish is a bit extreme, don't you think? It's not like it affects you.

I don't get the abused woman mentality. He hits you. He screams at you day in and day out. So why are you taking it? And why the hell do you attack anyone who tries to help?
Go listen to 'The Throes' by Two Gallants. It's a song about a family with an abusive father, told from the mother's perspective. Even if you don't like the song itself, just check out the lyrics, it's quite well written.

Getting drunk. Seriously, I could write entire essays on why it's the most senseless form of punishment for your body. What do you honestly get out of it? Most people I talk to hate the taste of hard liquor, but drink it anyway. They hate waking up with a hangover, hate embarrassing themselves when they're drunk, and so on and so on. Yet so many people, even on these forums are all about getting hammered/plastered/whatever you want to call it.

I just don't get it.
I don't drink either, and that fact alone puts a huge stigma on me. Fellow students look at me as if I'm one boring, uninteresting do-gooder who can't be fun. On the other hand, older people see me as a prime example... and after saying that, they take another sip of their glass of wine/bottle of beer.

How am I a good example, if nobody is following my 'good behaviour'?

Another thing I don't get is why I see some 8 year olds running around with cell phones, and actually USING them. What the hell do they need that for, they're friggin' EIGHT years old. I was still occasionally playing with my Mighty Max/Power Ranger toys, and Pokémon, for god's sake. I didn't need one, and frankly, being 19 as we speak, I still use it more often as a watch, than as a phone.

I also don't get the girls at concerts. You know, the kind that tries to get in the front row, then scream their lungs out yelling that they love the singer. Don't they have something better to do? Like, enjoy the music, because that's what they paid for?

In the Developer's Commentary, there's a bit about the cube and how they used a few little psychological tricks (Reverse Psychology, Hearts, NPC's praising it, Assumed Guilt) to make sure you kept hold of it, and even now they're a little shocked how powerful it's become.

I'd love to see the 'actual' average time it takes for someone to destroy the cube.

Yeah, they said something about how once they gave a tester the cube to use for more than just pushing a button, the testers didn't want to get rid of it. It was just a normal cube, but they took it through a few different challenges without abandoning it, and then they didn't want to.

So they made that cube the Companion Cube.

Things you just don't get

One thing I don't get is why people would wear earrings. Putting a hole in the weirdest part of the body to hang shiny metal from it? Strikes me as odd, and if you really look at them they just look silly.

So what don't you get/understand?
If I don't understand something, then it's purely a matter of lack of understanding on my part. Then it's my friggin' duty to go over there and ask: "'scuse me... how come you are doing that?", and in the process learn a bit more about my fellow man instead of advertising my ignorance on an internet forum.

Well sorry for being a party-pooper... but I cannot these days, not since I started listening to what people actually say. So as soon as someone says the words "You know, I really don't understand why..." I realize they have just shot themselves on the foot. Ignorance is not fun or amusing. It's just... a deficiancy; an error; a gap in the information.

There are other things we can amuse ourselves with.
