Also: a fucking map! Fine, make it craftable, make its ingredients rare, just let me have some way of knowing where in the world I am. All it absolutely must do is show land, water, and the player's current position. Optional: have it show tunnels when underground so that I won't get lost, as well as different colors for different materials.
A map would be nice, but make it blank and, as you explore, the map fills itself in. It should have two markers. One for current position, and one for your spawn point.

-A flood gate.
-Trap doors..or at least allow doors to be placed horizontally.
-Some way to fly (like a glider).
-A better light source that you can turn on and off. Redstone torches are neat but very dim.

How about a bed?
I hate waiting through the night when I don't have anywhere to mine.
Just let me right click it and sleep. If I'm outside and vulnerable, how about do something where a bed fast-forwards the game but if you get hit by an enemy you wake.

Something beside water that, when you land on it, you won't take fall damage.

I want to be able to stick a box next to a workbench and a furnace, and have them combine so that you don't need to open each window one after the other.

Also, some way of moving the spawn point. Without it, the whole exploration thing is almost pointless.

Elevators.

Placeable Spawn.

Perhaps save states?

And I heard they were going to add mob cities.

T'would be cool

Edit: An objective of some sort.

Maybe you are trying to find like a secret cave or something that gets you powers (though that would defeat the purpose of building a base)

Maybe neighboring tribes?

Also magic or alchemy.

An end-goal. Minecraft is already a great game, but I got bored of it after a few weeks because there was no point to doing anything besides digging a hole and waiting for the end of the (blocky) world.

Personally though, I'd kill for some rounded edge blocks. Not entirely round but round on like one side so I can make like giant oreo's or bottle's or rounded corners for my rivers.
I've only seen others play MC but from what I've seen I have to agree with this and also a less complicated way to link Red Dust to two mechanisms with one switch and on that note perhaps some remotely controlled bows would be nice for a defence system.

Some more furniture would also be nice for presentations sake (for example, how about making tables from sticks and planks that join together when put next to each other) or how about a practical use for bookcases or a Paintbrush made from a stick and some dyed wool that allows you to paint wood and stone?

How about the ability to let others view your game world (without entering it) and offer you special challenges to give the player more drive to mine and build?

Oh and I agree that the game could definitely use a movable spawn point. I've seen people travel far away to set up a new base and then have to get a map drawn to sail back when they die.

The possibilities are endless.

a way to control water. something useful for redstone (not just novel traps that are basicly useless and doors/ mazes). a better way to dye things blue. the ability to change the color of cobble stone. a recipie index (maybe have it fill up as you make things). a map although all my bases end up connected by a giant bridge ne way. and a better means of self defense, not nesisarily guns.

I'd be surprised if i'm the only one to think of this, but a mining helmet. You'd be able to wear it and it would produce light in a cone in front of you.

Also some sort of sluice, so i can create water elevators. Well proper ones at least. Rope too, firstly for dropping down mineshafts, and secondly for turning into some sort of winch for elevating chests to transport cargo.

well everytthing above but i'd also like pets like if you got a cat you could feed him fish and he'd scare mobs within 15 spaces of him or if you got a dog you feed him prok and he'll bark at near by mobs while indoors and attack them maybe make a leash with 8 string

They plan to release a lantern made using Glowstone (because, naturally, an almost essential tool should be a nightmare to gather resources for) which should serve the purpose of a mining helmet. However considering you'd probably have to hold the lantern to use it a mining helmet would be more convenient.

A brief tutorial would be nice. Nothing fancy. Something like Yahtzee said in his review. Notch has said that he would like to at least tell the player how to open the inventory, so this is one we might get.

Trap doors and sluice gates.

Maybe some primitive guns that use Redstone as an ignitor and flint can be turned into bullets. Maybe a lower rate of fire than a bow, perhaps degrades faster and attracts mobs, but more powerful.

A sleep system.

Weather patterns and seasons.

More uses for gold.

A resource-detector, to more easily find materials.

More ways to get the different dye colors.

An easier way to kill those God-forsaken fuckmothering Creepers.

A way to cook things faster than having six or seven furnaces stacked on one another.

Perhaps I am asking too much from this, but this is really something I would want. I tend to want this in almost every open world game but not has yet to really achieve it. (to my knowledge). Also this could kill minecraft for plenty of people so I would like this to be optional in the menu.

1. I want a dynamic world filled with living NPCS that build, harvest, interact, explore etc. Now most would tell me to get some mods. However I want NPCs out there who may get together, grow in population and literally build up their own shelters, farms which will eventually grow to a town as they gather more. And if you live in this world for a LONG period of time it may develop into a city with large buildings etc. This feature will give true life to minecraft.

2. In addition I would also want fully interactive furniture. A bed to sleep on, chairs to sit on and library shelves that allow you to write books for any reason and store them in. Enabling such an RP element would make this game a social network as well as a building/exploring game.

3. With point 1 and 2 merged you will have quite a Town! Then, to a even more complex feature I would die to see these towns literally build up communities such as husband/wife, develop a law so you cant steal from anywhere without getting the villagers on to you and maybe even have a NPC trading post. They will have supplies on offer to purchase if you trade them something they find of value (maybe they lack steel etc). This feature will give towns and NPC purpose. But also, instead of growing a stupidly massive amount of items your not going to use you can feel like a true miner delivering minerals to a growing town and receive rewards for doing so. Could you imagine several towns? What if there could be war? A player built (in multiplayer) town who act as bandits who camp near developing towns to raid all their supplies once they have the man-power?? But I know I'm asking too much and this isn't the game most are addicted to. But if only... if only...

Java probably couldn't handle that... But minecraft's open world is probably the only game which can allow you to create a game like that. Every other game has severe limitations.
