If I have one thing to say about the Escapist its that most of its members have a partisan love of the forum. Be they the pricks who will constantly leave unhelpful corrective comments so that "the forum becomes a better place" or the people who come in and post when they feel like it but lurk like crazy. The Escapist loves the Escapist for better or for worse.
There are things the Escapist community says are not in the forums, like console wars etc. And to a point its true, but they are often replaced with just as inane issues solely based on opinion where nothing is accomplished more than poo flinging and a bit flame. Things such as Mac vs. PC, things such as religion and science and a whole host of other things. We also have a horrendous amount of spam in the forums. Thousands of threads that all deal with your favorite X or Y, or the best X or Y or the stupidest X or Y. With the spam comes posters with massive post counts who are looked up to for their spam.
The Escapist certainly has a very tightly knit community as well. Being friends with one member means you are connected into a gigantic web of friends. Simply by going on IRC, after 2 weeks I had more friends. They're a great community. But with community comes the grudges and the name-dropping that can make the forum incredibly unfriendly at times. Threads are created with the sole purpose of talking about specific community members. Some are petitions to the mods on why famous members were banned. Some are long threads talking about why famous users are banned and why they're glad they're banned. Almost all of them end in people saying the forums aren't like they were before in the good 'ole days and no one looks forward to the future.
I've actually been on here long enough now that I've noticed a change even since November and early December when I first started lurking the forums and later joined. Escapist trends will continue. But I don't think this one will change:
Escapists love the 'Pist.
