An AR-15.

Why I don't have one is because...
1. Expense. I simply don't have that kind of money and the price+tax of guns in CA is higher than other states I've been to.
2. They are illegal in my state under the "Assault Weapons" Ban. The only way I could get one is if it were neutered which would actually be more expensive. The 10 round mags alone are typically 3 times more expensive than the standard 30 rounders.

A gun. I've been old enough since forever and could have bought one at any time (even poor as I am, my low expenses mean I have a little money that I don't need for anything), but I never have. I dunno, I don't have the skills to use one and am not sure it's a skill worth learning right now.
As long as you get someone who isn't dumb as a rock to help you out, you can pick up the basics pretty quick. It is an expensive hobby, but it is one of my favorites. Don't worry about not having any skill. Just like everything else you pick that up with experience :D
Thanks for the encouragement. I've shot some rifles, but never was any good. I have actually shot an AR-15. It cost my dad over a thousand dollars to assemble from the component pieces, but it was a pretty cool gun. Of course, I was young then, so all guns felt like they had a terrible kick to them. I've also shot a civvie AK-47.

Anyhow, maybe I'll buy a gun when I can find a low price on a Remington 870 shotgun or some cool kind of .22 pistol for plunking at soda cans with or something.

No need to buy something expensive. I would recommend when you get an idea of what you want go down to a range to see if you could rent one. I know some people who have made mistakes in their gun purchases(can't load the mags, can't pull the slide back, too heavy, etc) and if they had taken the time to use one beforehand they could have gotten something they could actually use.

Always glad to help.

I would like a Colt 1911. I am very tempted to dip into my savings or sell off some old guns for one...
