War will always happen, unfortunately. Sometimes its over money, sometimes over events, usually at the core its about religion or ideas. For us not to have war... we'd have to all have one religion, all have one currency, besically live in a somewhat communistic society where no one has individual will or ideas.

HOWEVER! If it did happen... well, supposedly when it happens, that is the sign that the antichrist is here becuase he unites the world. whether or not thats true is up to debate. So if it happened one of two things would happen.

1) the world would be on its way to ending in seven years.
2) People would be so overwhelmed with the idea, i dont htink people could handle it.

Just the idea that NO ONE out there wants to hurt or kill another person is so mind bending it makes my hjead want to explode, becuase you're forsaking one of the primary basic human emotions: hate/anger/envy/lust/ any of those seven deadly sin things. So i dont know. I guess i would say if it happened... society would either strength around the idea or fall apart from it.

World peace sounds hilariously boring, I'd build my own private military and proceed to do some old school rape/pillage until humanity put it's balls back in their proper place.

I don't think civilization has ever known peace. Each civilization is always in transition to another. One group invades another and sets up shop, only to be conquered by the next group. It could be through politics or through hostile methods, but I don't think people could deal without conflict.

Unfortunately, the reason that our society is so disconnected is because of a lack of camaraderie. The news stokes the fires with saying a predator is in your backyard. As was said in M.I.B. "A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky dangerous animals and you know it." [http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0119654/quotes]

We've built our communities further and further away from city centers to be away from each other. When people are crammed together in public, things tend to turn ugly at the slightest provocation. As a result, we rely more and more on fossil fuels to get in and out of the city, causing more congestion on the roads to get to those homes. Increasing the likelihood of accidents or road rage. And like a junkie, we look everywhere and do anything to get that oil. Scar the Earth, torch the sky, and lead our soldiers to ruin.

The future will only change if our mentality changes. I believe the Mass Effect had it right. When the Earth discovered remnants of life on Mars, they stopped seeing countries and territories, and thought of the Earth as a whole.

Even in times of peace there will still be human vices that lead to conflict. We are only human after all.

Unfortunatly, world peace will never occur. I could take the EASY road and cite religious reasons (i.e. fallen world/sin nature/different religions demand blood/etc), but I'll go the hard road instead: Human Greed.

Wait, that wasnt really much harder, was it?

We're all greedy little bastards. It's just a fact. The way we've functioned and always WILL is "You have what I want, therefor I will kill you to get it/prove my point!"

Yes, certain societies have managed to live a fairly peaceful existance with the rest of the world (Switzeland, anyone?), but that's USUALLY because they are so fucking badass that no one wants to mess with them (or they have all the money... Switzerland, anyone? lawl).

Plus, as stated above, scientific discovery stems from wartime research. Almost every major advancement we have is thanks to research done during SOME WAR.

Rockts? World War II missle research. Jets? Guess what? Germany in World War II (they also did the whole rocket thing, too.)! Aircraft was in peacetime, yes. 1903, NC cost, two brothers who worked on bikes.

Surgical procedures? Most of those are tested in the field hospitals.

Hell, even food preservation came from war!

Not saying war is a good thing, it's NOT. But unfortunatly, it's going to continue, regardless what we do.

Someone is ALWAYS going to piss in the cornflakes, it's just life man.

And as far as aliens etc, if they make it to us (and yes, I DO believe there is life out there somewhere, we'd have to be VERY ignorant not to, ja?)... We're totally boned.

Just sayin'.

War is good, good for technology, good for medicine, good for advances in trauma surgery and in a way good for learning about other cultures.

World peace, eh, I can probably guess what would happen if, say, world peace will be declared tomorrow.

1. World peace declared.
2. World's armies dismantled.
3. Power-hungry opportunists secretly individually raise militias.
4. Opportunists easily conquer various parts of the world.
5. New-found nations, not being particularly commited to the idea of peace, declare war on other nations.
6. World war declared.

So then, without a full change in the nature of human personality I don't think world peace is feasible.

The OP must not know that our planets elites (industrial/corporate) don't want many of us to survive in the long run, I am quite positive that they don't mind one damn bit that people are sick and dying, I'm also quite positive that given the chance they see sickness and war as a great way to help with population control. Having all people live long lives does not bode well for them...

UM.... the massive problem I see with this is war isn't something humanity just does and can't help. War is caused by a strong enough belief, something that people will sacrifice everything for (and someone elses everything as well). War is the effect not the cause

i actually favor War. Its a good way to reduce the worlds population. You might think im stupid or something. But i found out a scary fact. If there wasnt war, our population would have been 4x more than what it is right now. So in a short way, War is a population decreaser. Yesh decreaser is a word now :p
But without war we could send all those extra people to Mars (which is the same size as all of Earth's landmasses). And maybe some other planets, too.

I do agree with others that world peace is just an illusion, unfortunately. Too many people, too many ideas, too many differences. The only way we can have world peace would be if we were all destroyed or were all turned into clones somehow. Neither of those sound very appealing.

"War...war never changes."

Pretty much sums it up. We'll never agree on enough things to end war completely, but we should at least stop as much violence as possible.
What are you talking about?

"War has changed."

LolSnake. No but seriously, I always kinda wondered that too. The sad thing is, like people have said, it's not going to happen - it's in humans to fight, it's an instinct. If someone's breaking into your house, you can't just politely ask them to leave. If they don't run, you're going to have to fight them if you come face to face with them. It's just something we have to live with.

Ah you see the problem is, those B-2s will come in useful if the alien life we meet is hostile.

I do wonder though, why do we need to spend so much money on the wars we are having at the moment? If it was a world war, where we were against big countries and losing the war would have massive implications, then perhaps that would be understandable. However, we aren't in that situation, we are fighting against a bunch of tiny militia groups.
Yes, but if we can eliminate them with laughable efficiency every time we see them when we're using B-2s, I would call it worth it. Seems to me a world war is around the corner... People just don't want to acknowledge it.

Indeed. Duke Nukem Forever would sooner come out.

Wait...
God dammit.

But yeah, for humanity to unite we would have to, well unite. And we hate each other, so yeah. Only way we'd unite is if some common enemy tried to kill us all, and even then we would fight over who should lead.

Well to establish world peace first war needs to change back to the way it used to be when other countries would not just occupy each other but actually invade and take over. The United States for example should take over Iraq and Afghanistan and make them part of the country permanently. And one country should just take over the world and hold it in a state of peace forcefully. Then we would have world peace(not counting a few rebellions and terrorists).

Exactly! Peace would degrade into anarchy, which would then assemble into an inconceivable number of semi-coherent groups, which would assemble into armies, then nations, then everyone would just fight and world peace would have been the cause for the greatest, most confusing war the world has ever seen.

Yeah, we'll defeat the aliens with our *super advanced weaponry.* Think about that for a second.
Anyways, war and competition is actually incredibly vital to bettering society. Why do you think Europe (and by extension, America) turned out to be the top world superpower? Because that continent has pretty much been at war for the last 3000 years.

Edit: Don't you just hate being skipped to the second page?

I don't think we could ever have world peace. Too many people. Too many diverse ideals. Limited Resources.

As far as I'm concerned humanity will always fight for power, resources, or because someone else is pissing them off. As for aliens I really hope we don't get found because if they are anything like us it would end up just like Cortez and the Aztecs, or Columbus and the new world, or Americans and the Natives Americans, etc. Either wiped out, enslaved or both.
