Thinking of trying WoW.

I spent 2 years on it and I'll tell you there's better things to do in life. If you have a family, focus on them. The only remotely interesting thing in WoW is raiding, and that's a huge time sink. With a half-decent guild, I'm talking like 20 hours a week. If you're not raiding, you're just stagnating and doing dailies everyday. And if you're raiding inconsistently, you're not getting anywhere either. It's not worth it to give it a chance to get between you and your family. You need to be able to alt+f4 at any time and not feel like a douchebag for ditching a bunch of people in your group, and WoW is tricky in that it sometimes will make it hard on you.

tl;dr: Family first.

Seriously? Don't, ever. WoW Died when wotlk hit, WoW doesn't exist anymore, its now a revamped kid game that lost all character and history it had before cata, and now... its twilight fan mania.
I might not have played WoW since Cata, but pre-BC was not 'full of character', just a majorly boring bore-fest, with occasional aggrevation spikes. If the new questing is anything like BC or WotLK, it is a major improvement. Just I don't want to get pulled back in under any circumstances.

try it, yes, it's dull at times, and it's still grind tastic, but...it's fun if you have people to play it with

It really doesn't hurt to try it.

I tried it, and lost interest, I really don't see these 'addictive properties' people speak of.
WoW isn't all that addictive to begin with, mostly because the game isn't exactly a ton of fun (especially right when you start); it's not horrible, but it's just interesting enough to keep a player going. The addiction typically kicks in once a player hits the level cap (which can take a few months to accomplish), by then going onto to WoW daily is a matter of habit. People go onto the game not because they're looking to have fun, but rather because it's just what they do.

Really, it's not a lot of fun to start with and it doesn't get much better. It isn't addictive or all that compelling... but each time you play it, the game becomes more habitual. Eventually this becomes a problem. When I was last playing (over a year ago), there was always loads of people standing around trying to figure out what to do with themselves. They aren't doing anything except standing around the main cities (or running laps around it); they could easily have real life obligations to attend to, but they'd rather spend their time standing around town in WoW doing nothing. That's habit and/or addiction, not playing a game for fun.

And before you dismiss that as a few isolated incidents.... they're not isolated.
It's an endemic problem with WoW, and probably the MMORPG genre as a whole.

I like that the slightest implication of anything file sharing related gets you a suspension but here are several people supporting drug abuse and not even getting a warning for it.

If you want a game with more interactivity and freedom i would suggest you try out Darkfall, theres a trial you could try out.

Basically the game is an open ended world where you are pretty much the leader of your own destiny, you don't have an classical MMO/RPG class setup where you pick warrior mage or healer here you can decide self what you want to play as.

If you pick up an 2h Axe and start killing mobs with it you will gain skill in 2h axes etc.

You can gather resources and craft almost anything in the game from swords bows to boats and cities. However the city building is not as open as some other games (All cities are pre set and by this day they are all built up and owned, however you can siege a city with your clan and take it over)

Boats are built in various sizes theres small rafts you can make or small ships with 1-5 cannons then theres the big Manowar boat with 25 cannons on each side (these destroy cities very fast, but cost possible more than some fully built cities)

Some people are hardcore pvpers since the game allows you to kill people pretty much anywhere in the game, however newbies got immunity to player damage so they can get settled into the game

The game used to be very hard for newbies but these days they have introduced so much stuff to help out newbies such as meditation (offline skill gain)

My recommendations is that you join up with a clan asap there are some clans that recruit newbies and help them out in the game they would more than gladly help you out.

If you would like to help me by joining through my referral link it would be greatly appreciated!

Definitely though don't miss this game its definitely one of the best i ever played.

Try the 10 days trial, if you liked it, then buy the whole game with it's 3 expansion packs.
Minus the three months I get for free, how much would all that cost?
Quit a lot of money actually, the battlechest (which contains the original game and the first expansion pack) is about 30$ and the other two expansions will cost 60$.

so total is 90$, however I heard it's cheaper to buy it digitally from Battle.net.

Go for it, it's pretty much hit or miss. In my case it was a complete miss and after playing EVE I could never go back. WoW has too much spam, hacks and intervention.

Ah yes, I've been there.

I held it off for long, but finally I caved in on playing it when Burning Crusade was just released.
I played it vigorously for about 11 months or something and it was fun.
But then I realized what a waste of time it actually is. A FUN waste of time, but still.

So I quit.

And then, right after the WOTLK release I started playing again because a lot of friends were still playing and telling me how cool the new expansion was.
So yeah, it was fun again! And again I played for about a year, until right before the Cataclysm release, I remembered why I quit in the first place.

And I quit playing again. And I don't miss it at all, despite a few friends still playing.
But it's really up to you, because the game is fun as hell if you are prepared to sink time in it.
But for me it wasn't really worth it in the end. Especially when they are content capped for an expansion. Then it just becomes a fancy chatroom with a monthly fee.

Had some cool times though.

Exaggeration over the addictive properties aside (honestly: I enjoy WoW but haven't played it in over a week due to large amounts of "can't be bothered to switch the PC on"), you'd lose nothing from giving the free trial a go. If you're the sort of gamer that craves non-stop action, you might not get on with it. If you like scenery and sightseeing as a by-product of the gaming experience, I reckon you'll enjoy it. The blood elf starting area is particularly nice.

WOW is an odd game- its pull is shockingly strong and you'll miss it when you stop playing it, but when you actually playing it your nagged by a stange sense that you are pretty much just pissing your life away doing nothing.

Sure, give it a shot if you want to. I like(d) it myself for the art style, exploration, quirky humour and polished gameplay. I'd especially recommend starting a Human, level to level 10 quickly and go to Westfall and after that Redridge Mountains. It's AWESOME!!!

Mind you, if you're a person with an addictive personality I'd watch out. If not you'll probably be fine, and seeing as you have a fiancee and a child already, I reckon that you already know how to balance real life and hobbies. The doom-sayers usually just want a scapegoat for their own failure.

I don't know for how long you've been away from WoW, but they've revamped the leveling content, made it a lot more engaging on early levels. More variations, better intergration of story and gameplay, you name it. Which is good, because to me it was always more about the journey than the end. And that's what they did, make the journey a lot more worth it.

As for your warning; it mostly traps weak people, people with addictive personalities and other issues that makes the want to really get away from the real world in the first place. Sadly, that's quite a lot of people.

it's a grindfest like every other mmo, if you like to do routine stuff with little to no variation go for it, but if you like to do different things each day then don't.

Well, after people have been harassing me and I've been throwing them on ignore, I actually wan to play World of Warcraft. I have a free trial, a friend who threw me another trial, and a friend who told me he'd pay for the first three months.

Here's the thing, I honestly have never been able to stand WoW. I looks utterly boring and a war of clicking. However, recently I've had the urge for an MMO, but Vindictus, Dungeon Fighter, and Maple Story aren't cutting it.

Someone convince me in or out of this.
I'd say try Rift instead, unless you've got a lot of friends who are insistent on playing WoW.

Also, clicking is bad and results in deaths of bunnies and kittens. Use keybinds.

Dunno what more you'd want from us... it's down to you whether you like it. Oh, one heads up. If you don't intend to raid or PvP, don't expect to be playing the game at max level much. Or at all.

Dont play it.

Its an awful game. I played from '04 to about 8 months ago. I played every expac, I did every raid boss and I got arena master on my toon(this is basically top 1% of the pvp population). The game is so fucking easy right now its mind blowing. The customer service is so bad it defies words, and the content is ultra easy.

Dont play it.

Try it out the games really fun with a couple of friends. The games still pretty good but not as much fun to play as original WoW.
