First person.
It's all about the immersion here. Playing in third person is like guiding a (rag)doll, not yourself.

In a third person game, you get to see your character do the things you're doing when you do them.

In a first person, a lot of actions tend to be implied with no animation to keep up the immersion. Exceptions being The Darkness and that new Might and Magic game.

To be honest, I prefer 3rd Person :)

Imagine any fighting (Tekken, Street Fighter, Guilty Gear etc) game in 1st person XD That would handle like a garbage truck.
Well obviously, thats why no-one has done that.

are you aware that there are monitors that allow for preheripal vision (curved monitors and 360 degree projectors), right?
Touché, if one would have such monitors.

and on that note its impossible with current hardware to recate outright realism because we dont have the tech for real time photon mapping, fully dynamic textures and environments and entirly realistic physics, so honestly i think your (cant recate the human vision) is kinda moot in that respect.
But it's possible to do that from first person?

but finally, i vote first because the only way to kill immersion faster than bugs that make the game unplayable is by using a third person perspective. take bioshock and half life for example, if either of those games were third person shooters the immersion would be completly non-existent. with first person your seeing things through the players eyes, and in that regard putting yourself in their place.
Immersion is overrated. Nothing you just said was anything but subjective rant. Only the last part, which I still think is hard to replicate.

I don't like either one of the two games you mentioned.

If the game is good, I'll play it no matter what the view. Some games play better in 3rd person. Some play better in 1st.

Generally first person. It comes down to immersion, with the first person view, I feel like I'm the character, not some guy remote controlling a human robot.

first off, did i EVER say its possible in first person? no, learn to READ.

finally, WE'RE TALKING ABOUT OUR OWN FUCKING OPINIONS, OF COURSE I'M BEING SUBJECTIVE AND OFFERING MY OPINIONS . and i, as well as many others, disagree with you, immersion can be the difference between an average game and a truly memorable experience.

also, thanks for proving that your no better than those lovely idiots over at gamespot who tout their opinions as fact, as evidenced by this statement:

just because YOU think immersion is overrated and YOU didnt like half life or bioshock that means they suck and they arent shining examples of what can be done with video games as an art form. please, come back when youve grown up.

Its really dependent on the game, I like both for different reasons. First Person is usually better for shooters, etc but poorer for RPG's (although saying that Fallout 3 was fantastic). 3rd person is better for exploration and customization but worse for horror games (the exception being Dead Space which I thoroughly enjoyed).

I'm going to take the unsaid third option, and go for Isometric, or indeed almost any sort of top-down viewpoint.

Definately my favourite.

No, you didn't, but you used that as an argument towards first-person perspective being superior.

Sigh. That's like saying; "The game experience in a game can be the difference between an average game, and a truly memorable experience". Do you even know what immersion means? Or are you just using it because Yahtzee uses it?

To immerse: To cover completely in a liquid; submerge. - To engage wholly or deeply; absorb.

In games it's used somewhat metaphorically.

Immersion is not a one factor in a game, it's the whole game experience itself, and how it is able to draw you in.

I haven't stated that said games 'suck', nor that they are bad games. I, personally, didn't like them. I said it, because you used them as an example of immersion, oblivious to the possibility that perhaps not everyone thinks so highly of those games.

I don't care either way, but I hate it when third person puts the character on one side of the screen like gears of war. I couldn't stand playing that on pc, my monitor is too big and my character was out of my main view.

Wait a mo... How come this thread is called Poll: Third Person or First Person? but there isn't a Poll?

There are enough mysteries in the Universe without you needlessly increasing their number.

For shooters and RPGs, I strongly prefer first-person. More immersive, more intuitive aiming and item selection/gathering, and just all-around better.

It's still got nothing on good old isometric 2D, however. Most of my all-time favorite games are isometric.
