Look cod hate is justified it is the same game every no gameplay changes no new setting every time its just oh the russians are assholes shoot them they play like a really bad Michale bay film its just shoot run shoot oh you have been shot sit behind a rock for 10 seconds replete its a joke
COD 4 - mostly took place in middle east
World at war - ww2 which you were allied with the russians
MW2 - direct sequal to cod4 so obviously going to have similar setting and enemies
Black Ops - various settings all over the world, took place during cold war obviously not the same setting as the previous three.

MW3 - again a direct sequal to mw2 so it will have a similar setting & enemies

Even between cod4 & mw2 the setting changed. In cod4 it was mostly russia and the middle east. In MW2 is was for the most part in the US.

Im not saying the story was great or anything. I thought the single player of black ops was so bad I stopped after only two missions but saying they have the same setting every time is idiotic. I 100% admit that the gameplay in the single player campaigns is pretty much 100% the same but multiplayer it is a very different story.
Waiting for something useful to be added by yourself. All I see is bad language and nullified arguments.

I've heard people say galaxy 2 is good but still complain it's the same game with yoshi added (it's why I got rid of my copy after a few days and I love me some mario I tell you that). But by this logic any game that uses the Unreal Engine should be banished. The key problem is sequel beating, which Super Mario Galaxy 2 ate bad, while Dead Space 2 and Portal 2 are at least new ideas. But Call of Duty's point now is that they don't even want to try to change it up in terms of game play (You mention Portal 2, at least it added some new elements to the puzzles with the bounce gel, and speed gel, and convalsive gel). But Call of Duty from what I played felt the same (played nice mind you) but just felt the same.

Something that was overlooked here is the difference between a rehash and a sequal.

Rehash in short is "Expansion/big expansion" worthy, where it looks almost exactly like it's predecessor with no meaningful changes for the better or even changes ar all.

A sequal is such, it's the next in a line, Asassins Creed For example, there have beeen significant improvements in all parts of the game on each release (thought what got better and worse is under debate), the point is, it should be the same but only a hell of alot different, Asassins creed is the continiuation of one of the best stories around in games these days...

I would bet money on if activision put out 2 versions of the game, the multiplayer only and complete package, (selling the multiplayer only for say half price) the multiplayer only would outsell the complete package ten-fold, and look, the multiplayers IDENTICAL to the previous ones, except they've taken out the "broken" weapons and replaced them with new ones. All your typical Cod Fanboy cares about if the multiplayer, and THAT is why there is hate on multiplayer, the masses of sum that populate the multiplayer ruin the game for the rest of us, and have frankly brought shame to gaming.

I hate it for demonizing my country, not 1 but 2 times! As if Russia would bother with wars in this day and age... Half of our troops would be fucking heroin junkies, unable to fight. We have better problems right now, you gun-wanking cold war fantasists!

Ok maybe "hate" is a heavy word. More like "ignore to death".

CoD gets a lot of hate due to the fact that it's basically the same game over and over for multi-player to the degree you would expect a free content patch to be or $10 DLC, and the single player is easy to the point of being content tourism even on the hardest difficulty setting.

Another major reason for the CoD hate you see is not due to the game but the players. People who are dumb enough to buy new CoD and Madden games every time they come out are a blight on the gaming industry for real gamers. Because selling the same game over and over every year is more profitable and these games show that it works to do so more and more developers move to making sequels rather than unique games. It's almost to the point that games made by western developers are not even worth looking at any more.

In short.
People hate the game that's been the same since CoD 4.
People hate the people who support these games and continue the downward spiral into content tourism.
Welcome to The Escapist!

OK I'm sick of talking about COD so I'm going off-topic.
No other game of 2010, and I mean NO OTHER GAME, has as many new ideas as Super Mario Galaxy 2. The overall goal of each level is the same but the levels are insanely creative. That's why it is one of the highest rated games of this generation.

It's totally obvious you didn't actually buy the game, btw. Don't worry, we all lie about owning games to make our opinions sound better :p
Don't put words in my mouth dude, I gave my copy to my brother and his nieces because I was tired of getting stars to save princess peach from bowser (hell they even reused a mario 64 stage). Cause hey if I hate a game I must not have owned it. I have better games to play over it on my Wii, PS2, PS3, Xbox 360, DS, PSP, and PC. And shocker they are at least different in their ideas (even it it can rehash ideas from it's genre), instead of another get X number of stars and save princess peach from bowser again.

But again thanks for assuming what games I own/play/don't own just because I hated the game.

im not a fan of any franchise that bring out a full priced game every year which is nothing more than a DLC of the previous game

eg fifa, pga, gh, cod. there are many more, but cod is the most popular and has that frat boy image making it easier to hate, imo

Shut up i am trolling about how AC Brother hood ,Uncharted 3, and spiderman is better than your cod games

Actully you are looking at the surface of people saying Uncharted 3 and all the other games is perfect in everyway some not so "loud" gamers say that AC Brother hood was just AC 2.5 (which i agree with) and you can see that Spiderman is just trying to suck the last of milk before the reboot of the movies i dont know much about Uncharted 3 since i have no PS3

Sorry for grammer

I don't hate CoD at all. More apathetic. I'm more of a single player gamer than a multi-player one. While I'll dab in MP if a game has it, it's not a deciding factor in what I buy/play. I played the first MW, and didn't really care for the single player campaign. I haven't bought another CoD game since.

As for Uncharted and Assassin's Creed. I love these franchises so I'll comment on them.

I love Uncharted because of it's story first and foremost. I like Drake, Elena, and Sully and watching them develop as characters. It also has fun gameplay. I'll admit that it didn't revolutionize anything, but it blends combat and platforming in a rather interesting way. This carries over to MP and makes it unique (and will I do play Uncharted's MP sometimes, I play the campaign much more). At it's core, the story and the world are what Uncharted is about, that's why people like the game.

The same could be said for Assassin's Crees. People like it's story and it's strong single player. The Assassins vs Templars conspiracy story is intriguing and the games always try to be historically accurate (disregarding the Pieces of Eden). I'll be honest, I'm starting to get nervous for the series. Brotherhood seemed a bit like an expansion, but it had enough story and new weapons/concepts to warrant it's own game. Though it looks like Revelations will be offering much more in the way of new things like the hook-blade and tying Altair, Ezio, and Desmond's stories together more tightly. The MP was interesting in Brotherhood, but once the novelty wore off I stopped playing.

TL; DR

The stories and single player campaigns justify continuing Uncharted and Assassin's Creed. CoD doesn't seem to have that as much, so I don't care about it.

oh COD hate. It amuses me so.

I hate it because yes, it is rehashed. and frankly, I don't care if you can give other examples of games that are rehashed over and over.

Its the sheer number of rehashes that get to me. COD is the Dynasty Warriors of FPS's.
And I really hate to say that, because i love me some dynasty warriors. The history that its based on is rather compelling, if you get a proper translation of the book...

Oddly, the one dynasty warriors game I don't like is Strikeforce, but I'll save that rant for another time. :p

Yes, their competitors tend to rehash, too. COD has become the baseline of all FPS's. The game has to be as close to COD as humanly possible, before adding whatever BS that most FPS companies add to it to make it their own game, as so to avoid copyright infringement.

Honestly, I'd rather most FPS's just go away for a good 5 years, let the other genres make some money. Maybe we'll get a resurgence in RPG's and Survival Horror games. that's just my personal opinion.

It's not that COD is bad, hell, Modern Warfare was one of my all time favourite games, it's just that each game brings very little new to the same old tired formula.
Think about what MW3 is likely to be; I would bet money that it will be a 4 hour, OTT (in it's defence, very fun) campaign, with a few new vehicle sections. Oh, and one of the protagonists will be killed off.
Multiplayer wise, it'll have about 60 odd customisable weapons, and some new killstreaks.
Does this sound an awful lot like every other Call of Duty since MW1?
The other problem with MW3 is the fanboys, because there is no fanboy more irritating than a Call of Duty one.

That said, it wont be a bad game, it's just that it'll bring very little new, and likely wont improve on much, while all the other games you mentioned (bar AC-Revelations) are likely to feel very different from their predecessors.

Don't listen to what people say. Play the games you love.

I, myself, play many popular games (from Mass Effect to Portal), CoD included. And I absolutely enjoy CoD. I do think people are a little too harsh on it, though. For example, barely anyone knows of MW2's terrific soundtrack.

And usually everyone just talks about the multiplayer, ignoring the singleplayer which was quite epic in scale and had a very cinematic feeling to it (like the part where you're speeding down the cliff with the snowmobile and as you approach the fissure to make the jump the music gets louder and louder, and when you jump, it stops. Such an epic moment.)

I ask you this, Escapist: Does a game really need new things to be good? CoD does the cinematic feeling of shooting people so well I don't ask anything else from it.

I hate the Game. And it's players, twitchy idiots as they are(not all, but there's one ruining it for me in every game). I am sick and tired of CoD. I've bought BlOps, and I never play it, I don't even got it installed anymore. I've grown tired of the samy gameplay. The spammy grenades, the lack of teamwork. The false realism. The spawnrape. The everything.

It's just not my type of game. It's not original. It's dull, repetitive, and it makes me angry.

I had to stop reading the responses to this thread because they are filled with such idiocy I can't stomach it anymore.

As to the OPs question about COD hate, who the fuck knows? People like to hate on things. If you don't like something that is popular, that automatically puts you on the outside of a group. People don't like being on the outside. They resent those who have the shared experience. Maybe they secretly wonder if there is something wrong with them because they don't like something that so many other people have liked? I'm no psychologist, but I'm sure there are theories aplenty as to why people will hate something popular so vehemently.

As to some of the arguments I've read in the first ten or so responses, I feel compelled to address them:

CoD is just the same game over and over again

I don't know. I've played three of them now, and I would say the story lines are fairly unique and interesting. MW is part of a trilogy, so obviously those stories are building on each other. In the modern gaming world, it seems to me most sequels are pretty much the same game with a new story. Some people really like that. When you have solid gameplay, there really isn't much reason to mess with it. I'm not pissed because my books don't know have letters that dance on the page and sing me songs while I read. If it's about a new setting and story, I can't see the problem here. Innovation for innovation's sake is one of the more annoying things the gaming industry does imo.

It's not CoD, it's the douchey fans.

I know quite a few CoD fans who aren't assholes. I myself am one. I'm not an idiot, I'm not twelve, and I'm not "giving gamers a bad name" as one poster put it. I enjoy all types of games. I can certainly see the merit of something like CoD. After playing it, other shooter games do seem clunky by comparison. CoD has a very smooth and fluid system for an FPS. In fact, I've heard this generalization so much, I was reluctant to play CoD. I'm glad that a number of my friends suggested otherwise.

Is it for everybody? No, but neither is Mario, and that has a decidedly more favorable opinion of it in communities like these, even though they haven't really done anything different in the last few years either. Mario Sunshine was really the last interesting innovation they did with that series, and it was unpopular, so they went back to the old Mario 64 type game.

I'm just saying before you start labeling an entire community of gamers, you should probably talk to a few CoD players here on these forums. Many of them are quite willing to recognize the flaws in their favorite series. They just find your arguments for why the series sucks to be not particularly persuasive.

The company that makes it is greedy!

To me, this is one of the most baffling arguments. I personally know of no single game company that isn't profit motivated. They all want to make more money. Yes, they hire artists who really just enjoy making great games. But without the corporations like Activision, these artists wouldn't have a place to work. Let's just set aside the fact that they just announced a CoD con where all the proceeds go to charity. All gaming companies are greedy. They are all run by people and shareholders who want more money for less risk. These are not non-profit organizations. If you hate CoD for this, you really should be more consistent and hate all gaming companies.

I'm not going to argue that the working conditions of one place are better than another. In huge organizations like that, those kinds of things can change on a yearly basis. Your favorite company can easily be bought up by assholes and the whole structure can change. But let's not fool ourselves into thinking any of these companies are altruistic. I've yet to see a non-profit oriented gaming company. It's what they do.

I'm just sick and tired of seeing it! I want it gone!

A rational argument if I ever heard one. If the very existence of CoD bothers you this much, you may need some therapy. I'm serious. It sounds like an anxiety disorder.

It annoys me to no end that Stephanie Meyer sells as many books as she does while authors I love to read flounder in obscurity. However, I would never wish Twilight away. Millions of people love it. My pleasure is not more equal than theirs. Neither is yours. I know, you are the most important person to you. That doesn't make this particular sentiment any less selfish.
You, sir, have won the internet. I was going to write something similar to this, but you put it better. As a fan of the CoD series, this explains everything I've wanted to say to the people hating on CoD. I want this post on the front page of the Escapist. Now.

Mostly because of the new release every year with not much added in, the campaigns were always considered to be bad (even though I liked them all), and they release overpriced DLC for just 5 new maps. Assassins Creed does do something different though, if you notice, each AC has added or improved a brand new game changing feature. AC 1 was the start and featured the ability to kill your targets stealthy or non-stealthy (I know that it's been done before). But had the problem of repetetiveness and bad mission pacing. AC 2 pretty much improved everything in AC 1. Then Brotherhood comes along and adds multiplayer and the ability to call on other assassins to help you. While the core hasn't changed much from the first, it still adds something brand new for the series every year or takes the time to polish up on some of those things they added last time. All while continuing on 1 storyline and making it better. The last COD to add something completely new was MW 2, and it was just spec ops. WaW added something new, and that was zombies mode, COD 4 added something new for the time, and that was the fun multiplayer with good campaign, and had great customization for the time. Now, every COD just reskins and rehashes the same thing, and from what I've seen of MW3, it looks the EXACT same as MW2, my friend, who likes pretty much all of the COD's he has played a lot, even thinks that MW3 looks the exact same as before. I've seen nothing new that MW3 is going to offer to the series. That dosn't mean that it won't, but I haven't seen it yet.

New Vegas was not like Fallout 3, yeah it used the same engine but that's about it. The story, characters, weapons, factions, quest structure, morality, location, writing, companions, DLC, message and lampoons were all completely different. [sub][sub]and better[/sub][/sub]
Not to mention a completely different devloper.

The difference between the CoD series and the other ones you've listed here is that the other games aren't being released on a yearly basis (Assassin's Creed the exception here). Furthermore, these other games always come with engine improvements, gameplay enhancements, story development, etc far beyond what CoD does every year. Aside from making new multiplayer maps and weak 4 hour campaigns, not much goes into CoD's annual releases. There are minor additions such as the odd new weapon or killstreak reward, but the fatigue from what is essentially a re-skinned game with different art assets coming out every year is definitely souring most gamers' view of the series.
You nailed the points I was planning to address. The FPS genre is broader than one might believe, and MW/COD/AA/WAW/etc have only focused on a small niche of that definition. One might further argue that they have gotten very good at that niche, but a few dozen games into a single format that ceases to be a compliment.
