Speaking from the POV of a politics student; I have to saye that the issue of race is like a core value- like religion and economic status.
It's about opinion here. It's their choice to blindly follow. There is probably an element of culture involved too.
Just speaking plainly- a softer approach might have been nicer- or even just shouting once. If the guy hit you- just suck it up and apologise- your mates aren't going to laugh at you- you took a blow for your politics (yes politics - I could explain but I don't want a block of text).
By hitting the guy back- well that was your choice. As for hate crimes well, honestly I can't say. I'm an advocate of free-speech and civil liberties- when people trample them I get mad, so I dunno. It's hard to say.
As for the sentencing - assualt can be very mild - or very bad, whereas hate crimes are always very bad and can be life-scarring in the very worst cases.
