It's only a hate crime if premeditated intent is determined, simply hitting someone of a different race doesn't constitute a hate crime.
Anyway, without knowing the full nature of the argument that led to the "name-dropping", I can't make a call on this outside of, "you might have gone a little too far after 'shut the hell up!'." You weren't part of their discussion, but you definitely had a right to complain when it became less-than-civil. If she wants to praise the man behind the desk because of the color of his skin, that's her own loss, but if she starts shouting his name and toppling furniture, no one should hold it against you to ask her to keep it down.
