This is a true gamer test if you were playing video games since at least 1988.

Kinda soft ball. It's the Konami Code.

What's it mean to me? Honestly, not, too much. I remember the takara codes more fondly. :p Those were mid 90's though.

Heck, I played ET, and Combat on the Atari. I'm rather proud of how long I've been gaming, though I'm kinda embarrassed about how old I am. :p

I wonder what "Pocofuego" means to some people?

Dude, we live in the google age, there's nothing you can ask that we can't find out in a seconds notice.

Well OP, considering that's not the Konami code, and I feel as though that was your intention, it means to me that you may have ironically failed your own test. ;)

Joking aside, here are a few for people to guess:

*SPUNKJOCKEY
*ANENERGYBARTOGETYOUFAR
*FARMBOY
*RSJABBER
*BADBUDDY
*SHOWMETHEMONEY

Game and code effect. Good luck.
Okay I know two of these:

FARMBOY unlocked the TIE Fighter in Star Wars: Rogue Squadron. Or maybe it was the Millennium Falcon; one of the two.

SHOWMETHEMONEY is a cheat in StarCraft that instantly gives the player 10,000 minerals and 10,000 vespene gas (not 1,000 as someone mentioned.) Obviously this was limited to the single player campaign. Also POWEROVERWHELMING grants invincibility for all your units.

ANENERGYBARTOGETYOUFAR sounds very familiar but I can't place it. I'll probably kick myself when I find out where it's from.

Now for my diabolical test of gaming knowledge (It's slightly PC-centric, I admit.)

1: The cheat code "impulse 101" gives all weapons and ammo in which game? (medium)
2: In the Source engine, what console command must be entered before any cheat can be activated? (easy)
3: Which game would the phrase "Frog blast the vent core." be immediately associated with? (tough)
4: In Wolfenstein 3D, what is the last thing Hitler says when he's defeated by you? (tough)
5: In Portal, what function was GLaDOS originally designed for? (medium)
6: For Half Life 2: Episode One, the Source engine was upgraded to include which environmental effect? (NEEEEEERD!)
7: In the 1990s, what was the name of an acclaimed RPG trilogy of top-down view space shooters. (If you know this you are friggin' AWESOME!)

AND NO GOOGLING! I'll know.

It's the Falcon.

Against my better judgement, I'll tell you.

It's from Banjo Kazooie and it granted double HP.

Also, to answer your questions:

1: Half-Life series (and most Source/GoldSrc games)
2: sv_cheats 1
3: Honestly don't know.
4: I should know this, but can't for the life of me remember it. I recall the scene but not the words.
5: Maintenance and testing assistance in competing with Black Mesa. Bonus: Her name is an acronym for Genetic Lifeform and Disk Operating System
6: I presume it was the inclusion of high-dynamic-range rendering?
7: Part of me wants to say Armada, but I'm pretty sure that's not it. I feel like I should know this, but I can't put my finger on it.

The fuck is this, Tumblr? You want me to reblog your OP, bro? Maybe after that we can have a chat about space hoppers or Taz bars.

On a slightly unrelated note, for some reason I've remembered this code for over a decade now, name my game!

all the damn fools who think you got the Konami Code wrong never played Ikari Warriors
That's the code that brought you back to life right?
I'm pretty confident... like 90% sure that's the code

Ahh man what's that from? As I was reading it I suddenly flash backed to me entering the code in as a kid, I remember because I always said out the codes I was entering them, I remember entering it but can't for the life of me remember what game it's for.
That almost looks like the Level Select code for Sonic the Hedgehog 1.

Anyway, mine's a easy one but it's always the first cheat code that pops into my head, up, down, left, right, A, Start.
Up, Down, Left, Right, A + Start = Sonic 1 level select.
Up, C, Down, C, Left, C, Right, C, A + Start I'm pretty sure is Sonic 1 debug mode. Which I never knew as a kid. I knew about the level select but I didn't learn about the debug mode until years later.

Do "OnDeadlyGround" and "OSSETT" ring any bells for anyone?

I wasn't born until 1995 and I know that. The konami code is the most quoted video game fact ever.
On the other hand I'm rather proud of knowing what happens when you beat the 255th level of pacman.

Ah, I was way off, I never even played that game. I knew it had to be a platformer but I was thinking maybe Donkey Kong Country or one of the Rayman games. Missed that big time.

Okay you did better than expected, so I'll give you the answers.
1. The answer I was actually looking for was Quake (1996). This is where it first appeared. However, you're not wrong since GoldSrc was a very heavily modified version of iD Software's Quake engine, so it figures that most of those cheat codes remained the same.
2. Correct. Anyone with a PC version of the Orange Box should know this.
3. This is from Marathon, Bungie's first real FPS series that served as the inspiration for Halo. The alien race you fight creates "simulacrums"; suicide bombs that appear human and rush you. Canonically, since the aliens don't know our language, the simulacrums sometimes spout nonsense phrases, the most infamous being "Frog blast the vent core." which became a meme amongst Marathon players. The entire trilogy is now freeware. [http://marathon.sourceforge.net/]
4. He says "Ava, auf wiedersehen." Basically saying goodbye to his mistress, Ava Braun. Then you get to see his Nazi guts melt in the sweet, sweet Death-Cam.
5. Partially right, but in reality she was simply marketed to "de-ice fuel lines" according to the presentation slides in the meeting rooms in Portal. That may seem like overkill but this is Aperture we're talking about.
6. Correct. I'm impressed.
7. The games I'm referring to is the Escape Velocity [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Escape_Velocity_%28video_game%29] series. They were well received but a bit obscure because the first two installments were Mac OS exclusives. The third one, EV: Nova, finally made the jump to Windows as well as Mac OSX, and is the only game still playable on current machines. Fortunately there's no narrative continuity between games and the third one was by far the best. I sunk weeks of my time into these.

Anyway, I like quiz time, it's fun.

Lets see if anyone gets this one! I almost find it depressing that I remember these by heart to this day. I don't even have to think about it, it's just muscle memory ><

R2+Right, R2+Left, R2+Right, R2+Left, R1+Down, R1+Up, Turn around three times, Square+Down, Circle.

R2, R2, L1, R2, Left, Down, Right, Up, Left, Down, Right, Up
I wanna say Tomb Raider because I remember having to be on a flat surface for the turning bit to work, and even then, it was a pain.

And the second one is from GTA III, but I can't remember if it was the tank spawning one or not.
Aye, Tomb Raider 2, twas the all weapons cheat. Forward and circle blows her up and just jumping backwards is the level select cheat.

TR4 had it worse as you needed to be facing /exactly/ north, the only way you could do it was to find a platform you could climb onto that happened to be facing exactly north. The spinning works even if you do it four times, so as long as it's over three spins it'll work.

GTA3, but the weapons cheat again. I think the tank cheat had some 3x triangles and squares in there.

I'm pretty sure that's a cheat code for GTA III, probably weapons. I also remember that changing L1 to another shoulder button are also cheat codes, I think for armor and life and maybe something else.

I have one for you all:

"HELP ME"
Yeah I think it relied on the shoulder button combos for those three, I got nothing on your "HELP ME" on though, no idea whatsoever.

For question one I almost listed Quake but decided not to as I assumed most people would associate impulse_101 with Half-Life and not Quake. Poor judgment on my part. XD

I actually never played through the entirety of Marathon. It just never appealed to me back then, so I never really devoted much memory to the experience. Perhaps a revisit is in order...

As for Escape Velocity, I vaguely remember it. Pretty sure I've never played it myself but I do recall a friend being into the series. Or rather, the third of the trilogy, seeing as he had a Windows-based PC.

A bunch of semi-random button presses, probably on some form of Nintendo NES controller.

However if you re-arrange a few of them you get the famous Konami Code, discovered in the NES game Gradius when a dev who was tired of dying while playtesting and created the code to give him all the power-ups.

Of course I only know the code through pop-culture references as I was born in 1988 so it can't really be a 'true gamer test.'

Another possible test whose answer is less likely to be gleamed from general knowledge would be:

What game is this music from?

I'm a 1993 kid and I know the Konami code. Using it to gauge 'real-gamerness' is pretty silly, since it's become both a pop culture reference for anyone making something related to the 80s and a meme that's thrown around on uncommon occasions. It's like having the question 'What year did Famous Guy X win Famous Race Y' as a requirement to pass your driving test.

Of course, I've never understood the point of 'True Gamer tests', since it's such a subjective point. It's like I could make my test be based on the knowledge of ALL the Secret areas in the first level of Wolfenstein 3D, the earliest time you can grab the Excalibat in RoTT, the highest level wild pokemon you could catch in Red and Blue, how to access the Rainbow Shell in Chrono Trigger and finally how many points the final boss gives you in Raptor: Call of the Shadow.

All old, irrelevant, obscure information from games I played as a kid. Nowhere near a good criteria to test if someone is 'worthy' of gaming, since people have such wide tastes, pick up the hobby later on, drop the hobby after a while, never played older games due to lack of systems...

It's all just... you play games, you're a gamer. Simple enough. Don't need to know what the Average DPS of a Titans Grip Fury Warrior with BiS ilevel 548 gear and a latency of 300ms is to claim the title of 'true gamer', that's for sure.
Hey, if you have an issue with 'true gamer' bring it up with the OP. I just pointed out that as a test the Konami code (if what he was trying to type was the code) fails due to the shear amount of references to it outside of direct gaming.

Doom on the other-hand has been ported officially and unofficially to nearly every system capable of handling it as well as achieving mainstream presence (though a portion of it has been negative) so while nearly everyone has heard of it, only those that bothered to play would recognize its music.
