This is actually real. This is not fanmade. A live action Pokemon movie.

I'm not opposed to a live action Pok?mon movie on a principal level but if I had to make one I'd do it like a 80s sports movie. You know, scrappy underdog kid trying to win the Pok?mon League, probably loosely based on Gen 1 and set in Kanto. This is just about the most arbitrary angle to take on this. What exactly is this even going for? Who Framed Roger Rabbit? I mean, I don't hate it I just don't see why this is the foot they wanna put forward on their first film adaptation of Pok?mon.

I have some hope for this mainly cause Alex Hirsch and Nicole Perlman wrote it.

Still gonna be better than that Monster Hunter movie.
There is gonna be a Monster Hunter movie? Yeesh Monster Hunter World was more successful then I thought...
Directed by Paul W.S. Anderson, no less, known for directing most Resident Evil movies, Mortal Kombat, Alien vs. Predator and Event Horizon. The Ridley Scott of Uwe Bolls.
That actually might work as Monster Hunter isn't a really serious IP. 10 years ago Bruce Campbell would have been a voice actor for them, 10 years before that he'd have been the star of the movie.
Any game where you fight giant lightning chickens, and then strap their beak to the end of a rifle ans suddenly its a lightning rifle is exactly the type of movie that needs a Mortal Kombat treatment.
It?s looking like it?s just Bayformers but replace the transformers with rathalos or something.
That's not too far off from the Monster Hunter experience, all things being equal

I went from really non-plussed to "Is that deadpool voicing pikachu?!" to "...Ok I wanna see this. This actually looks funny, and the CGI is actually pretty neat, creepy as psyduck looks".

That scene with Mr Mime had me legit laughing.

Yup, and like the picture that a poster above showed, it's about a grizzled UN special ops team on tour in Iraq.

Who fall into a portal to the monster hunter world and need to close the portal before the monsters use it to take over earth!

...Basically Super Mario Bros the Movie, but with army dudes and hopefully semi-decent CGI monsters. I've got no hope in the movie. :(

Which is a shame, because it's not hard to write a decent Monster Hunter story.

Lolwut? Yeah ... Monster Hunter shuld be the easiest of game-to-movie ports. Elder dragon detroys a village and plenty of people are insinuated to be killed and/or transformed into refugees, insert grizzled great swords wielder after obligatory '10 years later...' card over a screen wipe, replaced with a sword swipe and flow of Rathalos blood and the mighty wyvern flying away. Enter the unnamed great swordsperson wearing a stage converted armour set from one of the games, and covered in the runic-style tri/quad-colour tattoos of all the monsters they've hunted over their career. Establish rivalry with a romantic interest who uses a bowgun and how this unnamed swordsperson just beat them to the punch of taking down said beast after an estabishing scene of their efficacy in the field compromised only by their bickering and mutual competitiveness occasioning in some slapstick and awe inspiring acrobatics by wire. They drag parts of the carcass back to the cheering town in a stern silence and disregard of eachother born of contempt despite the cheering masses.

Insert plucky, irascible Guild Gal who accompanies them after highlighting how a contract for an Elder Dragon matching the description of the one thatr destroyed their village has come up. Swordsperson and bowgunner race to their mutual objective of hunting the beast. After their competitiveness costs them the near death of said mutual friend in Guild Gal when the Elder Dragon attacks part of the village, only driven away by a lucky timed shot of a defensive dragonator that results in her injury and incapacitation--they decide to put aside their differences for jolly co-operation, and slay the beast after an epic hunt scene...

Dancing felynes and cooks preparing a mighty banquet in their honour as they hear another ear piercing roar in the distance, with a background scene of fleeing villagers and general chaos ... cue obligatory heroic dual hunter weapon prep pose shot, all presented in an initial centred frame and running towards (and through) the camera towards an unknown beast in the distance. Screen wipe to Stylized Monster Hunter movie logo fading to black and a scrolling credits scene with a stylized take on the MH game intro sequence music.

Add in a comedic Felyne skit at the end of credits scroll....

This shit writes itself. Just need to flesh out Act 2 with some additional establishing devices to showcase the world and shit in it (partly facilitated by a long ship sailing sequence of travelling to said Elder Dragon sighting, and fperhaps a fight onboard where you can build characterization, and perhaps a glimmer of the redemption in the Great Swords-person beforethey blow it at the beginning of Act 3.

Perhaps throw in some inside jokes of how big an arsehole noob hammer uses can be online.

Honestly, this has me way more interested than any other live action pokemon movie possibly could.

Ryan Reynold's voice doesn't really fit detective Pikachu though. Detective Pikachu needs to be a hard-drinking grizzled detective, like Spider-Cop.

Anyway, will probably watch it if nothing more interesting comes out that month.

Wow that's surreal, but oddly enough I'm kind of on board.

I never really had an expectations about what a live action pokemon movie would look like. Frankly the fact that exists at is kind of blowing my mind, but again I okay with what I am seeing.

Yup, better than what they have, for sure.

My own "Came up with in 5 minutes, but is better" script was something like this:

Open with man running with two kids from iconic series monster, say a Deviljho or a Rathalos (if you wanna play it safe), he is downed by the beast, shouts his kids' names as screen blurs and the monster unleashes a torrent of flame in their direction. Opening credits.

Smash cut to protago-dad wearing war paint on a ship. Meet the other three hunters of the story and their pet comic-relief Palico, yadda yadda, establish that by coincidence they're all hinting the same monster, and that the trio are actually veteran hunters.

Same monster attacks the boat, hero does something horribly foolish in an attempt to get revenge, boat is shipwrecked as a result. The team then realizes, oh, he's a complete noob who is literally using a carving knife (or a regular blacksmith hammer) to fight and doesn't even have a proper weapon, and chew him out for his recklessness.

Party escorts the crew to a nearby village, they get attacked by pack of weaksauce monsters (Great Jaggi or Velocidrone), hero has to fight one on his own and gets saved by his posse when he nearly beats it but underestimates it and how monsters grow stronger when desperate. Hero realized how outmatched he is and that he should follow their lead. Time for act 2 to be about learning what it takes to be a real monter hunter who can work with a team and not some revengeful doofus with a knife.

They gear up in town, yadda yadda development, they fight another big monster to start solidifying their teamwork and the hero's new cooperation and maybe how his life skills can help them. Yadda yadda, they track the boss to it's lair, hero gets his own proper Monster Hunter weapon forged from one of the baddies they killed, etc.

They prep massive ambush of exploding barrels, drop traps, falling rocks, etc, track the monster and lead it into the ambush, cue the long and difficult final fight across an entire canyon, where the hero takes a hit trying to protect a critical backline ally, confirming he's grown and learned to cooperate. The party survives with some meaningful injuries, hero gets a big nasty scar, goodbyes happen, etc.

Hero returns to his previous life, having had his revenge, but he has his weapons and armor up on a wall. NPC person runs to him for shelter and tells him that his caravan was attacked by a rampaging Kut-Ku. Cut to hero charging out the door with his weapons and armor. Credits.

It gives the hero a meaningful but not overused motive, lets him be the proxy character for outsiders to the series, establishes a goal from the start, etc.

I might take my kid. I don't think I'd go by myself, and she's not really that interested in Pokemon but she does like Pikachu. We can both go into this wondering what the hell we did to ourselves

The concept is cute, but all throughout that trailer I couldn't stop thinking how hideous the CGI looks. They tried to make Pikachu look too real and it just doesn't work. It's like those live action Garfield movies.

Yeah. Yeah it is. If only it wasn't.

This has Pixels written all over it.
That's not fair, this movie looks like it might have camp value.

Anything is possible, but America tends the lack the level of reverence necessary for camp. Especially when it comes to adaptations of this type of stuff.

To those commenting about how ugly or creepy the pokemon look... remember that guy who made those Realistic Pokemon images oh so long ago?

Yeah he... he actually worked on this. I'm pretty sure these pokemon are the "Reined in" versions of his stuff.

So is no one gonna mention that Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures are working together again to make this movie? I guess that Universal collaboration to make the Warcraft movie didn't do hot so they went for the video game that is arguably even more popular.
