You know what can be loads of fun? Franchises!

Franchises allow you to tell bigger stories. Franchises allow you to get attached to characters. Franchises allow you to stay within its warm embrace like a childhood blanky!

But sometimes franchises are not the loving spouse that they should be. Sometimes...franchises hit you. You tell yourself that you can change them. You tell yourself that you just shouldn't make them angry. You tell yourself "It'll be different this time!". Maybe it is different...for a little while. Eventually you fall back into the same routine...the franchise gets a few drinks into it and now you have a black eye to explain away to the neighbor franchises.

For myself, that game for me is once again Assassin's Creed. "It's a new everything!" thought tippy2k2, gleefully opening up the game. Then you remember...this series is really kind of bad at stealth. The free-flow run style still has you climb a ladder when you need to run down the alley. The combat is still "puddy-patrol Power Rangers-style" with a group of bad guys going one-on-one against you. The protagonist still hops around like a pixie-filled child when all you want to do is get off the damn building. All of the problems that have plagued this series since the first one just don't go away.

Why can't I quit you Assassins Creed?

So Escapist people, what franchises do you keep crawling back to even if you know it's a bad idea? Maybe it's a game genre that you don't like but you find sparks of enjoyment in this particular series? Maybe it's a game series with so much potential but just slips a tiny bit up to screw it all up. Maybe it's a franchise that has fallen from grace but you feel a certain loyalty to it for all the fun it used to have.

EDIT: Changed the Title from "is is an abusive relationship...why do I keep coming back??" to "This is an abusive relationship...why can't I quit you?" because I think Title #2 sounds funnier and I like to flaunt my power as the OP. Dance puppets dance!!!

I have bought every single Dynasty Warriors game that was available to me. It's just misplaced nostalgia. I used to play the game with my best friend when we were wee little kids and I guess that always stayed linked to her.

I usually binge play the game over a week and then never touch it again. DW gets boring super quick and the story has become so dull because it's always the same freaking one and always the same freaking stages and they're always ten years behind in terms of technology.. but...

I still have a soft spot for it and its characters so I guess I'll continue wasting money on it. you're welcome koei.

ps. jin is garbage. original 3 4ever.

I own all of Infinity Ward's Call of Duty games, yes even MW3 and Ghosts. Admittedly I got Ghosts as a gift without asking or anything, but wow. Why do I feel the need to see if you've stopped being crap IW? You can see the bits that were fun in MW3, too, which makes it all the more tragic because it suckers you back in (in my case, some of the Spec Ops missions and the Face Off game mode which I play with what is essentially my partner in CoD).

I know I say to myself "Halo 4 did a Halo 4", but even I know that I will inevitably play Halo 5 and have a crying session at 343 Industries taking another crap on the series I so love. Edit: To fit in with the theme of the original post. "He didn't mean to hit you, he was just angry because he was the new guy in town. He won't do it again, he won't do it again".

I'm a Sonic fan who's played nearly all of the games, barring the Kinect ones, and the odd one here or there. I think I win. Or lose. Probably the latter.

You know what for I've got over that hump, at this point I own many more games then I intend to even play and I can reliably say No when something smells fishy, even if it is a very compelling series.

But before that I would end up buying any with a recognizable name, not even checking if it's any good.

Pokèmon.

I started out with Red/Blue ages ago, and have bought and completed at least 2 games each generation since (Red and Yellow, Gold and Crystal, Ruby and Emerald, etc). I'm not even saying that the games released more recently - like Black/White and X/Y - are BAD, but at this point I find myself asking "Do I REALLY need to catch èm all AGAIN?". I've been doing this song-and-dance since 1998 now, and I feel like I'm done.

Have you ever watched Naruto (anime series)?

I did. I was stupid enough to watch the entire filler episodes hoping that the series will get itself back on its track the following next week. It was torture but I did it anyways. Apparently I had nothing better to do.

According to the guide "How to watch Naruto without filler" posted at myanimelist.net

Watch episodes 1-25
Skip 26
Pick up at 27-96
Skip 97
Pick up at 98-100
Skip at 101-106
Pick up at 107-135
Drop or Skip at 135-219
I mean holy shit, that's span of 84+ weeks of filler. Who the fuck pulls this shit and thinks its ok?

I stopped watching the show long time ago but this goes down as one of the biggest regret of my life.

That sounds terribly disapointing. I guess I'm lucky that I only like Awesome things that stay Awesome or just keep getting better for their entire existence.

I mean the 5th and final season of the X-Files may not have been the best, but it's not like they drug it out for another 4 seasons, eroding away pretty much all of the quality the show once had and replacing the varied and interesting mystery of the week approach and replacing it with a boring story arc.

Right...

Right?

I can sympathise because I did it as well but after about 60 episodes of back to back filler I couldnt take it anymore it was absolutely horrendous I wish they did what Fairy Tail did and just stop making them for a year or so until there is more manga to adapt. After the filler it got awesome now there is more filler but its interspersed with small bits of non filler and I just cant be bothered to wade through the crap for the good bits. I think its finishing this year though so I will probably make an effort to see it though at some point.

As for franchises er well I tend to buy almost every fighting game I can get my hands on and then usually hardly play them for the most part due to time constraints and then of course when I do get to play either everyone has buggered off or I get absolutely annihilated unless its one of the few franchises I was able to sink loads of time into when I was younger then I can hold my own for a while at least.

Theres also Final Fantasy I have played and finished every main numbered entry and a number of spinoffs (exc the mmos entries) up until 13 but although I could stick 13 the trilogy in that killed me I am right at the end of 13-2 could prob plat it in a few hours but im not sure I can be bothered and have no real intention of doing so while 13-3 dosent appeal to me in the slightest (sure im far from alone here). I will go back to the series even though there hasnt been a FF game I have massively enjoyed since X and overall the series probably only has about 3 or 4 games that I found amazing. I do go back because they change stuff so it always has a fluctuating quality and there is always the chance for another amazing entry.

Thank you, Tippy. If that title was the opening to yet another thread complaining about the Escapist forums, I think I'd have to buy a bag of crisps just so I could angrily explode it in my fist. I'm just thinking about it now.

[small][sub][sub]Mmm...YEAH! Yeah, take that, you fucking ***** crisps![/sub][/sub][/small]

OT: Yeah, the controls in the AC games are more miss than hit for me at times and quite...cluttered(?)...and yet Ezio's story made me want to love the game world. Parts of Brotherhood were just plain crap at times, but again, infuriatingly compelling.

For me, it's Spider-Man games. I know they aren't going to be good. But I want them to be. SO much do I want to recapture that awesome feeling from 10 years ago playing Spider-Man 2: the Movie: The Game. Of course even that game was basically busted, it just had the one great bit; The Web Swing mechanic. But it was so great I've been chasing that same high like a heroin addict who can't stop chasing the dragon.

And every time one comes out it's the same vicious cycle. "No" I will say. "No, I'm not buying another one!". "There's no way Beenox is going to make this one any better than the last turd they shat out".

Then I'll see some video online or an advert that makes it look like maybe -just maybe- they listened and learned and made adjustments to the formula that might allow me to once again have those moments of glee from over a decade ago. And my resolve slowly wears away and I eventually give in and buy it. I have to know. And then I do know. And it is awful. Another piece of crap. Another example of me being part of the problem rather than part of the solution. Another game where I, an informed hobbyist who watches this industry and SHOULD know better, has supported shovelware garbage.

I've been a huge Spider-Man fan since I was 5. 37 years I've been enjoying this character in cartoons, in movies, and for a while in games. There are legitimately great Spider-Man games out there from the before time. From the long long ago. It's just been so long it's hard to recall their names at this point. And none of them were as good as Spider-Man 2 from the PS2 (or Xbox or Gamecube).

*sigh*

I WOULD say Mortal Kombat, since after 4 it's been giving me a lot of punches in the ribs and black eyes... but the franchise entered rehab and anger management courses and we had a second wedding in 2011.
I have something like this with Ubisoft since I keep coming back to their games which just can't stop sucking.

Nope. Don't get this kind of thing either. "I'm a fan of your stuff, even if some of it is shit! I still like the shit, because you made it! Because I love you!"

Why...?

Play good games. Don't play games because they have the same name. If they are bad, they are bad...

To be honest, it's Pokemon for me.

Started back in the days of Red/Blue... I remember being incredibly excited for Gold/Silver and absolutely loving them.

Then Ruby and Sapphire came along and they were perfect. The secret bases meant I could restart games without feeling I've lost the character... Abilities added a lot to the game... The GBA SP meant it wasn't immensely frustrating to play if you weren't in the absolute perfect light conditions at all times... And best of all my friends played it with me. A perfect experience.

Then Diamond and Pearl were... okay I guess. They ruined secret bases though... and by this time my group of friends had all split up.
Then Black and White were okay... The actual battles were better than they've ever been, but it's still missing everything.
Black 2 White 2... meh.
X and Y... ugh, even the actual game itself feels like it's going downhill at this point.

I really want to get into it every generation... They're all great games, but it'll always be missing that group of friends, and the sense of discovery I had and just... everything that made the game what it was to me in the first place.
I'm kind of forcing myself to ignore the Ruby & Sapphire re-releases. As much nostalgia as I have, it's less for the game and more for the situation at the time.

The Final Fantasy series.

Got them all. Played them all.

I regard FFXII (12) as the second worst now. But every series has a bad one, so I was fine.

I enjoyed FFXIII. I enjoyed FFXIII-2. I pre-ordered FFXIII-3:LR and I played 10 hours and stopped. Out of the last 5 single player Final Fantasy games released, three of them were terrible (FFX-2, FFXII, FFXIII-3) and the other two were only okay.

I've long since decided that FFXV will be the make or break point. If this sucks, Final Fantasy will have left my list of games I always pre-order.

Because there is this hope that things will improve. For example, Peace Walker was not very good. Ground Zeroes and Phantom Pain will be. So, like all fans of a series, you simply suck it up and deal with the crap one for the sake of continuity.

Oh god, I remember trying to watch Naruto. The filler! Then I tried to watch Bleach. The filler! These put me off anime because I can't be dealing with filler. It's annoying enough when it's in a single chapter of a manga, but when it's in the anime, my god, they drag it out for ages.

Fullmetal Alchemist was really good though, because they didn't bother with filler. Funny that.

I'm like this with Call of Duty. Every year I swear I'm not going to buy it anymore because it's always got some huge problem, but every year I get suckered back in. I'm already doing it this year with Advanced Warfare. I don't know why I keep doing this to myself.
