This is an inauguration...not a superbowl.

It would make sense that this would feel like a superbowl considering that it's the most expensive inauguration in American history. And I didn't really find anything special about it, except that it allowed me to say, "Comrades, welcome to United Soviet America."

Well, to be fair, it is a historic occasion. He's the first black president, and I expect the festivities to be mostly black performers.

I know. I watched it today. Other funny moments
That really old man talking.
When that lady read the poem and said something about "Our forefathers are on our tongues." GROSS!!!

Also yeah it was overhyped. And one thing that made me mad is (Im %100 NOT racist) the news was only interviewing black people! What, white people cant be happy Barrock won?

Some people will seize on any excuse for pomp and circumstance. The only part of it that *really* annoys me is that they're using MY tax money for it. If they want to throw a big flashy party, they could at least have the decency to pay for it out of their own damn pockets.
Indeed, the last one cost like 40 mil and people threw a fit about that but with this one up over 170 million no one seems to mind...... Except me I'd like my cash back, even if it does just work out to 2 dollars per tax payer, I coulda had 3 drinks from my school vending machine.
Its been obvious since the race started that the media was MASSIVELY slanted in Obama's favor. I hate how everyone they interviewed said that this was the fulfillment of MLK JR's dream. Racism and discrimination still exist, it just doesn't affect most of the people who vote enough to have them vote for William Henry Harrison and Palin

I know! And MLK would be rolling in his grave for this! He wanted everyone to be EQUAL! He would want a black man to be called that on his own merrits, and not because of his skin. He would also hate how white people are accused of being racist for saying this or for not wanting Obama (I know, I see it all the time!)

I watched the Inauguration this morning (here in Australia it started at 2am :p) and that sure was alot of people. I guess Obama is so important to the United States because he's become a symbol of hopefulness and redemption and all those other things. That said I wouldn't call George Bush a bad President, his decision to invade Iraq was welcomed by the public at first.

I guess him screwing up the oath was uderstandable. The poet chick was the most stupid thing I've ever heard. I swear Obama was trying not to laugh after the epic speech he'd just made.

The Black Priest was awesome too. But yeah, I think everyone is making such a big deal out of Barack Obama because his policies will fix almost everything that's wrong with the country and everyone is really hoping he can do it. It's also because his inuguration is a massive symbol of African- American success and freedom. Let us also not forget that you Americans don't do anything by halfs. If you're going to have 30000 police and military personnel or something like that, you want to have an event thats worth it.

Now I am not an Obama supporter. With that said a lot of us forget how lucky we are to live in a country like the US (all you foreign haters don't even start) that allows us to live in the relative freedom that most people worldwide do not enjoy. We have a very tolerant (on the whole) society and we enjoy one of the highest standards of living in the world. A lot of us take it for granted that we aren't victims of fascism and genocide like people and Darfur, or under constant attack like Israel.

There are people who will no doubt criticize the US for its foreign policy, former president Bush (it feels good to say that), and the general greed and instant gratification that is rampant in our society, but its also nice to remember that there are some really admirable traits that the US has too; peaceful elections, an "appropriate" sense of patriotism on the whole, the general desire to help each other people (the US is the most charitable country in the world by far. Both its people and government), and the perseverance against all odds to do the right thing.

Yea no one cares about all the rest of the fanfare and $150 million for a party is a LITTLE steep (I could use some of that cash right now). But yea, its an exiting time for us.

I saw the speech only, does it strike anyone else as odd that this is not on the internet yet? Despite, for example, the bbc doing constant looped showings of said speech.

Well you guys were just freed from eight years of tyranny. Frankly I don't know why you all aren't happier about the idea.

Your money has been used for much, much worse things. Take abstinance based educational funding in the southern states. Funny how those states now have the highest teen pregnancy rates in the US.

Billions upon billions on the Iraq war alone. You should be annoyed at the 43rd President and all of his failures when it came to tax payer money.

And when you break down the cost to the US tax payers, it's roughly between $.75-$1.50

I think it's ridiculously overblown. The amount of hope that has been inspired within some of these people is incredible, but I think it's a false hope, or at the very least that the reality won't live up to the hype. I like Obama, much more than any of the previous American presidents, but the world is a big place and making a few speeches won't get rid of all the wretchedness in the cores of us all.

I'd say this is a hell of a lot more important THAN A FUCKING FOOT BALL GAME.

This is our future you're talking about. This will impact the world.

160 million dollars...as opposed to Bush's 24million and Clinton's 33 million dollars. Oh well, no skin off our backs right? -_-
It's tax money? I figured he would have used leftover campaign money to pay for some of it.

I think his anger with the subject comes more from this truly not helping anything. Sure the abstinance sex ed backfired, but it was at least trying to do something. This is just a party.

That being said, most inagurations are like this. It's simply the fact that it is Obama accepting the presidency that makes it a much large event for the media.

You make it a big event so people feel as though its a big deal. If they feel like that, then a lot of negativism is replaced with hope. That translates well for country morale and even the economy.

It will go on all day, all week, and all year. People can't stop obsessing over this man. He's the president not a superstar.
