I don't think it was talking about dvd's, I think it's talking about other counterfeit stuff. Like handbags, and watches, and shoes, and all that stuff that I don't care about. If it was talking about dvd's, then yeah it's pretty fucking retarded

When I saw "MTV Networks" in the description I was far from surprised. Only big media conglomerates who produce televisual and musical trash and actually exploit people - like MTV - could condone this.

This is a new ad against piracy made with us tax dollars.

It's fucking hilarious and sad at the same time, you should watch it.
Are you kidding? Do you know how many third world children it takes to sew a counterfit DVD?

YOU MONSTERS!!!!
I think I peed a little laughing at this.

OT:

If adults want to pirate, they usually don't care enough about said consequences enough to stop doing it. If you're marketing to children, you just say something outlandish like "Piracy makes you ugly" and it'll go down smoothly.

These lame advertisements hurt the cause more than anything.

Piracy: It'll give you herpes!

Piracy: Bin Laden will rise from the grave.

Well, they might work for teens...Maybe a bit too "mature." Howabout....

Piracy: Santa is pissed.

That was one of the most blatently retarded uses of the slippery slope fallacy...ever. "Buy a counterfeit Dvd and it will lead to drug trafficing, gang violence, and child labour."

I mean, fuuuuuuuuck.

First of all, who buys counterfeit dvd's from some fat russian guy in a town market?

It's called the internet people; and no gangsters earn money from them as its free.

ok, i get how maybe some russian guy (how come the bad people are all russian and black) is connected to dealers.
but why is he connected to child labour. its more likely that was a Nike factory.
and if it's reached that level of the Russian mob, why are they making black people shoot each other?

.....Umm.....What? Seriously?

...Also, who the hell BUYS pirated/fake/copied DVDs and stuff anymore? Doesn't everyone who pirates stuff just do so via downloading? Which...you know...CAN'T fund crime because it doesn't involve money?

Seriously, the industry has no freakin clue...

You want a good ad campaign against pirating? Then make THIS an ad:
My ad idea said:
Random guy near furnace: Piracy of entertainment goods is on the rise. You probably don't care. Well, you should, and here's why. This means less people are buying those products, which means the guys making it are making less money that they can spend on making MORE of it.

If this keeps up, they may eventually not be ABLE to make more of those products you like. *holds up a DVD of batman* That next batman movie? *throws into furnace* Not gonna happen. That shiny new FPS you're looking forward to? *throws in furnace* Cancelled. That bizarre and risky game that's yet to be announced, the one that will redefine gaming forever and be the most awesome game in history? *throws it in* Never gets made. So please remember, when you pirate stuff, you hurt the industry that you love. Just remember that.
That would be a LOT more effective, IMO.
yeah, digital piracy too... good point.
that ad idea was... chilling.
i might make that, just to offset the stupid of this one.

Goddamn am I glad I didn't die in my sleep last night.
We've got perfectly good, authentic products on the shelves of our stores all across the world that just so happen to... I dunno... EXPLOIT CHILD LABOR.
I do agree that you shouldn't buy pirate DVD's though. Just download the movies. It doesn't take five orphaned kids hopped up on backyard meth to sneak a camcorder into the theater and record the whole film.
I find this to not only be hilariously over-dramatic, but insulting to people's intelligence. Unfortunately piracy does cost jobs, but it wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't the jobs of those on the bottom of the Movie Industry Food Chain. Maybe if it cost the jobs of shitheel movie execs who don't give a flying fuck about putting out a decent movie instead of bland carbon copies. That would be better. But this isn't a perfect world.
Maybe I should just ignore this shit.

Fantastic post
Very fair treatment of the issue. The problem, as I see it, is that too many people on this site automatically assume this is targeted specifically at downloading pirated software. In that sense, yes, some of these claims look a little... exaggerated. But the issue is bigger than that one particular example.

Let's not be so defensive of our chosen vices that we over-apply criticism to anyone that doesn't agree. Respond to the information, not your feelings about the information.

Really? Pirating movies is on the same level as the drug trade and child labor? You really wanna go there PSA?
I agree with the overall message you're trying to convey(Piracy's illegal and bad and a bunch of idiots up on Capital Hill want to destroy the internet over it.), but c'mon put things in perspective here.

Edit:
Therumancer said:
Actually, I stand corrected. That is really bad and it is on the level of those things. I forgot that bootleg DVDs are still a "business" in this day and age. Yeah, it isn't talking about piracy, or not just talking about piracy, there is still a counterfeit movie trade out there and like other illegal products it would attract the same kind of problems.

So, the PSA may be overly dramatic, but it does represent a real issue. So fine PSA, you kinda win this one.

Right... right.

Make sure you buy your crack from a trusted and government sanctioned drug dealer. The counterfeit drug problem is really on the rise ladies and gentlemen.

Also, was that Olivia Munn?

I saw that kid worker and thought that actually, they do have kind of a point, and this isn't all that bad... And then the kid said "Only a few dollars" and I got the giggles.

What bothers me most of all is the frequency that child labour is used in manufacturing brand name goods is quite comparable to that of counterfeit goods. Does the fact that a CEO is making money somehow balance out that he uses child labour?

it,s really sad and the only people that buy that crap (as in think it,s real instead of buying obviously pirated DVD,s from a shady business man) are a-technical.
don,t get me wrong I,m not defending piracy.
also how is child labor/drug cartels involved with piracy? all the stuff involved with pirating stuff is made with robot,s (at least most of it)
