Ok. There used to be a lot of homeless people on my street. Now, I never had a problem with them, except that some of the guys made my wife uncomfortable, but I was pretty much of the opinion that I should leave them alone. Well, the problem increased, and the city had to step in and have a patrol that moved people along, because there were too many people hitting up other people for money and stuff. I hope you get the analogy I'm making here.

You CAN just turn your head, and look the other way when you see things you do not like, or, you can take action and do something about it. Not all of us are as complacent, and a lot of us are interested in the continuing betterment of our community. It's a great site, but why not make it even better? Should we not do everything in our power to uphold what we enjoy?

I remember the days when my spelling was 20million times worse than this, and forgetting to capitalize my i's but I did learn quickly, well when someone told me to start spelling better. I didn't make a thread till 100 odd posts, which failed since it was about Football:)

yah I've noticed it, but I wouldn't be too worried... trolls come and go on the forums, a bit like a "wave of stupidity" as some people put it :p just keep reporting them and it'll die down eventually.
Well, I wouldn't necesarily call it a wave... as a wave has some cohesion and does serve a purpose... It's more like... we had half priced day and all the parents came and let loose their "Special" kids into our arcade and now these kids who no longer can function in public schools, these 11 year old white boys, are going around trying to act badass and ruin other peoples lives to make up for the fact mommy drinks a lot and hits on him at his alternative school.

I'd hardly call trolls "special"... in any sense of the word :p

Not sure if anybody else has noticed, but there has been another influx of new users posting misspelled, insubstantial, contentious and repeated threads.

At the risk of sounding like a grouchy old person, shouldn't the admins/mods impose some kind of rule for new users?Achieving a certain post-count [80 would provide ample experience, I think] before being granted the privilege to start threads?
Of course, there are exceptions, but I'm sure they would understand.

I'm aware that my threads aren't exactly full of flowering prose or concise points, but nevertheless, it's sad to see the standards of this nice community being lowered like this.

Opinions?
It's been like that for ages. I've been posting for a while now, and reading for much longer; when Yahtzee started doing ZP for the Escapist, they came in droves, and their numbers only swelled with each video. They leave after one or two months, so have patience.

As for methods like that, I don't think they're necessary. The mods can deal with it the way they see fit; they've been doing this for years, after all.

Maybe you should quit whining like a little baby and let the mods do their jobs. Just a thought.

I don't see how this and that are similar. The wonderful thing about the internet is you scroll over it, or don't open the link. Easy right? I just don't see how you can be annoyed by something so petty. Life is too short, don't sweat the petty things, and don't pet the sweaty things. Live and let live I say.
I understand your concern for a "better" community really I do, but if you're looking for a "better" community, the vast ocean of users over a free and open forum is not the place for it.

And with that I answer your analogy with another. You get spam mail. Its inevitable. You report it to spam but more is going to keep coming whether you want it or not. You don't open it. Easy.

Agreed. We were once new users. They didn't punish us each time we do somthing or say something stupid. Why should we punish them.
When I was a new user, I didn't post repeated topics and my spelling and punctuation is always checked. I have a spell checking built into my browser because I KNOW I am a poor speller, but I care enough about not looking like a 12-year-old Halo addict to make sure my posts aren't littered with a lack of punctuation and spelling errors. Being new to the forum isn't an excuse to have posts seeping with ignorance.

I'm all for helping new users with learning rules (no Vs posts and such), but the OP was referring to the lack of simple grammar in a lot of the posts cropping up, and MANY repeated threads, most while the thread they are repeating is in the Hot Topics box on the main page.

if its really the terrible spelling and grammar that's pissing you off so much you had to make a thread about it maybe you should just stop being so anal. as long as its readable and respectful it shouldn't be this big of a deal. its not like people are intentionally using poor grammar or spelling to offend you, and its not as if better spelling or grammar means their a superior person. this is not a classroom its just the internet its not necessary to be ultra formal.
Remember, if bad spelling is all it takes to ruin your day, leave the internet now, before you discover hardcore futa... or worse... SHITTING DICK NIPPLES!

Says the person on probation for a post saying 'lol'.

Why not have YOU stop making stupid posts like that, and not having to make the mods put you on probation for that. What you don't seem to see is that you are exactly the problem and yet you don't see it, thinking that it's Samaritan's fault instead. Here's a clue: it isn't.

Far from it. I don't fancy myself a god, or even better than others on these forums. Just because it is the internet doesn't mean people should just stop trying to communicate in some clear method. It just shows laziness and a lack of willingness to have intelligent discussion.

New users are just that, new. For all we know, the newbies around here could have come from a forum or site where such things aren't frowned upon, like I had. (Though it was long, long ago that I became an advocate of grammar.) I say we give new users a 100 post limit before we start getting on their case about spelling, grammar, or repeat threads. It's enough time for them to see how the Escapist works, and get used to it.

A required post count for starting threads is a nice idea, although it's been thrown around often, so I'm not sure it'll happen.

Now this I can agree with. A post limit before they get in trouble for poor grammar and such, and a post limit before you can start threads would solve many of the issues I think.

Post count requirements just encourage spam. That'd worsen the content problem, only now it'd be a problem with every single thread since everyone has to hit a set number of posts. Hell, it's already happening with some people, who feel the need to hit 1000/whatever posts, and that's without a requirement of any sort.

Can't really do much. Educate people on their mistakes, and click report without posting when you see something the mods need to take care of. Ignore the rest.
