Agreed. We were once new users. They didn't punish us each time we do somthing or say something stupid. Why should we punish them.
When I was a new user, I didn't post repeated topics and my spelling and punctuation is always checked. I have a spell checking built into my browser because I KNOW I am a poor speller, but I care enough about not looking like a 12-year-old Halo addict to make sure my posts aren't littered with a lack of punctuation and spelling errors. Being new to the forum isn't an excuse to have posts seeping with ignorance.
Okay we get it, you are god! Yeesh! It's the frakin internet people! LEave your sanity at the door.
Far from it. I don't fancy myself a god, or even better than others on these forums. Just because it is the internet doesn't mean people should just stop trying to communicate in some clear method. It just shows laziness and a lack of willingness to have intelligent discussion.
ys bcz lord nos eye em on teh intermawebz 4 itz stimolating combersations.
That proves the issue. Sites like the Escapist try to be places where people CAN have conversation about what interests them (in this case games) and just because it is the internet doesn't mean we all should just say fuck it and act like elementary school students on too much caffeine. If people want a community like that, let them join 4-Chan and YouTube.
Lol this falls under that thread pointing out escapist users think their forum is so much more intermigent than any other. You do realize you are talking about SRS DSCSSN about VIDEO GAMES right? A good debate can be fun, but really now, since when is talking about your favorite easter eggs in a game labeled as "SRS BSNSS"?

Man, I am so tempted to create a new account and start a thread that is the opposite of this one. But I won't cause its a) far too much effort and b) piss people off. And i won't want that.

Or can we, I'll get the crowbar.

O.T., I think there should be more information in the first message you get from the Escapist, like don't be a troll, don't post a thread without checking the search bar, you know that kind of stuff.

Off Topic - For any non-gaming related discussion. Did you miss the memo? Also, what the hell is intermigent? I like it, but I do not think it is a real word. Why do you keep downplaying the fact that mature individuals can use this forum as a means for intelligent discussion? Because that is what you are trying to do by using "SRS DSCSSN", right? It's incredibly annoying. Before belittling our site, please take a minute to look up some threads that have some serious discussion in them, and maybe you will get some more enjoyment out of being here. We have great duality, being able to discuss Easter Eggs and The BNP all at the same time.

I think they should be more lax with some topics. I write a thread and it was locked, called your proudest moment in gaming. I was told it already existed. I used the search bar and it was ANCIENT. Would i get stick for resurrecting a very old thread? Surely if it died i have the right to start my own, maybe phrase it better and let it go? I dont think the banhammer should be used in cases of mistake. The older the other thread is the better it is.

Fact is that the influx of new posters will adapt.

There's more good than bad spelling on this forum, and the majority will rub off on the minority. Especially since they'll soon find out that they're taken more seriously if they (try to) watch their spelling.

Don't worry, and give it some time, I'd say.

I think those are by the same guy just making new accounts to troll about how much he hates Halo.

No thanks, I'd rather endure the occasional repeat thread than to restrict those who just don't post that much.
The most radical thing that can be done is that both the guidelines and this member group for newbies are linked to in the welcoming message.

Also, a superfluous thread gives "veterans" a chance to enlighten new members of the guidelines and general rules of conduct around here.
If it's just pure flamebait, then there's a big, red, shiny report button below their name that will alert the authorities of their presence.

I am not downplaying it, I am pointing out "You act like you are better then a person who doesn't use perfect grammer, yet you discuss video games or actual important topics on a website mainly for video games and get your head stuck up your ass if someone misses a comma or a capitalization"

(Also, intermigent is a word me and a buddy use whenever we get tangled up while speaking, we go "As you can see, I am a very intermagent individual" Intermagent being tangled speech for "Intelligent")

To be honest (as a fairly new member myself actually) my view on this is that newer forum members can become valued members of the community, or simply those who post frequent repeat topics and end up banned for an offensive/stupid post somewhere down the line. Those in the latter category will as previously stated get themselves banned or leave eventually.

Personally, i resent the spelling bit, seeing as i have dyslexia and the spell check on my firefox doesn't catch everything or sometimes doesn't even work for an unknown reason... But i can understand the resentment at the repeated threads bit.. I don't even go to the game discussion forum anymore because its like wading through sewage to find the really good discussions. Not a lot you can do about it though... just close your eyes and hope they go away.

You are trying to downplay it by using "words" that are typically used by teenage gamers with no sense of maturity. We don't do l33t speak here. Also, who is acting like they are better than anyone? Because we hold our users to reasonable standard of being able to understand them we are somehow being elitist? If you're going to come to a forum where you have to type, you damn well better at least make an effort to spell things correctly. That isn't being better than anyone, that is an expectation people had better get used to if they plan on functioning in any modern society. You will find very few users here who will jump down your throat for missing a comma, and if there has been, please point it out.

Also, how does it matter that this is a gaming site? Does that mean we should all stop giving a shit? Did you also realize there are reviews, news, editorials, features, and much more on this site that other people might be interested in other than discussing Halo? Don't generalize a whole user base, hell, I barely even game anymore.

Edit: I really do like the word.

It's funny, because nobody told you to click on the thread. Now, of course I don't mean that, as I've been arguing against that whole philosophy the whole time, but that could very well be an answer to everything here. Why report, just don't click the thread. Hell, don't click any threads, there's trolls on The Escapist. No threads, no discussion, no forums. So I don't see "don't click" as a viable solution. Ignoring problems do not make them go away in most cases.

I am sorry to use you as an example, you really don't have anything to do with what I've been saying, and yes we do need more hugs, in fact the other day we just had a thread for hugs, and a good time was had by all.

ya it mattrs cus speling stuf wrong consistntly gets realy dam anoying. I mean, there not even puting in a efort to make it legibal. They just throw leters at the page and thnk it'l look allright. its specially bad when evry other post is like taht.

I mean, I'm fine with the occasional slip, and I won't yell at people if they mix up there/they're/their once in a while, but when every other word is misspelled, you're just being lazy.

And we have more than enough "How did you find the escapist" threads, and "I don't like halo/half life" threads, and tons of other topics.
Again, a single repeat isn't doing any harm, but when there are 4 separate topics running at the same time with the same subject, it's just annoying.

How about making it a requirement to read the forum rules before posting. This could be part of the sign-up phase, and set up the page so that there is a minimum and maximum time for the page to be idle. I've seen this work on other sites that required reading (and I'd rather sit and read what it has to say rather than take the chance of blowing the time limit), and I'm usre there's at least one person on the Escapist that could figure out how to make that work.

Another option could be some kind of tutorial on working the search bar/forum search tool. That seems to be one of the bigger issues, aside from spelling errors and trolls. I know I've started at least one thread that I was almost positive was original but quickly found out that it was a repeat. Usually I try doing a little research for all of my posts to make sure I can back up whatever I write or write it correctly, but sometimes the search bar fails me (or I fail it).

I can understand spelling and grammar errors to an extent, since not all Escapist members use Enllish as their primary language, but some people don't even make an effort to write in a clear and concise manner. Language is important, and it isn't that hard to use it write.

It seems the best we can do for now is ignore violators, report when necessary, and move on to better topics. We come here to escape, not to battle trolls and illiterates.
