Hmmm, I always thought the Moderators do a fine job as it is, perhaps just a limit on the number of similar threads per week, oh and please chaps, post count does not always tell you how mature or familar the person is with the forum, I barely ever make posts on the forums, but I'm still always reading through the threads because I love people's thoughts and the quirky and controversial topics that come up :D
Same as with me.Sure i might have close to 500 posts but i have been here for almost a year now.

Okay at first I was going to just dismiss this as some Old forum member complaining about nothing but the dust that gathers upon the shelf he once stored his books on, but after a thread which went somthing like:
Run Free little Forum members, for I have taken your barriers away!
I'm very much inclined to agree with you. This place is getting VERY sticky with the amount of badly glued threads popping up.

I have noticed that. It was of the reasons I actually joined the forums myself. I liked how post count didn't make a difference and some people with low post counts had good opinions and those with high did not always offer anything useful or even remotely on topic... But The post count thing is a good idea in theory, not unlike Communism. But it would not work well, the people who want to start retarded threads would just make 80 retarded posts. It would just be worse but I have to say, it was a good idea, and at least you are offering solutions.

The idea behind the 80 post-count limit would be that it would give the mods a chance a to root out any bad apples/trolls. I somehow doubt they'd have the patience to behave themselves for 80 whole comments.

yah I've noticed it, but I wouldn't be too worried... trolls come and go on the forums, a bit like a "wave of stupidity" as some people put it :p just keep reporting them and it'll die down eventually.
Yeah, how about the recent NEWS?

New Escapist Wave of Stupidity

I think you should all take yourselves a little less seriously. It IS the internet, we ARE here for fun. Trying to use other sites such as 4chan or youtube as a metric of "what the Escapist is better than" is nothing more that vanity. I think if you make rules that just effect new users you're only gonna end up watching the new user count plummet. Then you won't have the thriving, vibrant community we all love, you'll just have some kind of snotty jerk club. And if that's what you want, then your welcome to it, I'll just go back to 4chan or youtube or someother site that is more interested in fun than spelling.
You have just summed up everything I was about to say.

When people start thinking of the Escapist as a nice place to come together to do internet things, instead of the last bastion of intelligence and wit on the internet, many of them will enjoy it a lot more.

Which is what you said, but I just wanted to make a longer post than just something like 'this' =P

"You must be level 70 to join my WoW guild, you n00b!"

If this is the attitude that forum members are going to have, claiming that everyone's first post is stupid (and for the record, mine was not), that post count or the time spent at this site is a metric for how worthy an individual post is, then maybe, perhaps, we should do away with the post count and maybe even the date of join on the left side of the page.

Seriously, think about it. If you have no user metrics tagged onto the posts, then everyone's opinions can be judged exactly for what they are, and members could have better discussions because they won't be so focused on post count when writing a response. There also may be a decline in the "report and move on" or "use the search button n00b" comments, which may I add, pretty much do nothing but boost the member's post count.

If there are people (who may I add have been here for less than half the time that I have) thinking that I shouldn't be entitled to post my own threads because my e-penis isn't big enough, then something has gone clearly wrong.

In short, any sort of post count limit to hold back any privileges is a bad idea. Anyone who thinks otherwise is apparently too much of an elitist to see why.

I haven't been here long, but the amount of "Do you like America", "2012: OMGZ!1! End of teh world!", "Do you like Halo?" threads are driving me INSANE.
Just ingnore them! You're driving yourself insane!
Bah!
I've tried, but I just can't do it.
It's like ignoring a retard holding some crack, a gallon of gasoline, and some matches. It's nothing less of impossible.

I have noticed how some different thread gets locked and how repeat threads are just left alone until they die.

Yeah, some system (not posts) should be in place that grants privileges over time.

I sincerly doubt it's as bad as all that. It's easy, just disregard the things that make you so mad. If it works on my family it can work on anything.
It's not really that bad.
I was exaggerating out of sheer boredom.

I just don't understand. Why ignore it when we can do something about it? This is our community, and we have the power to at least discuss and suggest changes. Why do people have a problem with that? Not being an elitist or anything, what is the big problem with implementing changes to better The Escapist? Or, at least discussing it.

You can ignore pretty much anything easily, it does not mean you should, or that it is the right thing to do so. As this thread has shown, there are a lot of people who obviously are at the very least open to discussion, which seems to me a much better route than coming into the thread and saying "Why not just ignore it?"

And so we come to the crux of the issue. These people aren't as annoying so much as people like to ***** about these things out of boredom. I say that people's boredom is no reason to start penalizing new users or start a submission count limit or anything.

Folk should learn to let things slide and get on with their lives.
Hmmm...
I think I agree with you there odubya.

You know, RAK, constantly saying that you're a... Well, all those things, is not flattering to you in the least.

And really, that's the nature of any forum. Great posts will always be in amongst mediocre or bad posts, no matter how good of a place you think you are.

Still, your point about users putting thought into their posts and threads is a great one which this place and every forum certainly would benefit from.

At the risk of sounding like a grouchy old person, shouldn't the admins/mods impose some kind of rule for new users?Achieving a certain post-count [80 would provide ample experience, I think] before being granted the privilege to start threads?
Of course, there are exceptions, but I'm sure they would understand.
This has been advised before, and has been ignored before. The mods advise people to report and move on for a reason, it lets those threads sink and also helps get the attention of the moderators sooner so that they can then remove the thread and deal the necessary punishment. The newcomers may be at a wrong for creating the thread, but we're equally at a wrong for responding to it; even if it's just to say that that person's in the wrong [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/18.136009#3063276], we're still keeping the thread alive and being hypocritical as a result.

Don't get me wrong, I would love to see more quality over quantity threads as you have been saying, but putting a minimum post count isn't how we can do it. A user could just as easily write 80 one line posts and then just cough out a pointless thread still, and we'd be back to square one -- Even worse actually, as the ones who put effort into their posts, take time and get large post counts over a long period of time won't be able to make the interesting and original threads that we want to see more of. They could even end up feeling mistrusted and patronised by whatever the mods force them to do first before posting and leave The Escapist before even bothering to post the intelligent comments that we want.

EDIT: For future reference, can people please post complaints like this in the Tech Team [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/groups/view/Tech-Team] group, it is one of the reasons why it's there.
