Those games you just want to hate, but can't.

The title speaks for itself. There's always a game that you want to hate, for being overhyped, looking fairly generic and boring, but when playing it, you can't help but respect it.

Mine has to be Bioshock. After hearing how overhyped it was, I really did try not to like it.

I never "want" to hate games. I either do or don't hate them. I would say the closest thing that applies to this would be Halo 3. Ok I hate this game but a lot of people really really like it. I don't see it but I don't want to be a kill joy and slander what works.

I want to hate Army of Two, but regardless of how much it sucks, it's just fun.

I originally played Morrowind because my friend was slobbering all over it all the time. My thought was, wow... fantasy RPG... how gay is that. Then I played it and it changed my gaming life. Morrowind is in my top 3 favorite games of all time and it really shaped my expectations for RPGs. Oh how I heart you morrowind.

The Halo series. I find them to be sub-par as games, but I find the universe and mythology to be pretty interesting.

You wanted to hate the game because of all the hype it revived? Yet you still really liked the game? Doesn't sound like it was over hyped at all rather it was actually that good.

when a game gets overhyped I tend to think thats it's just because they like the graphics, or they think the story is great despite bad gameplay. When I played Bioshock, I found niether problems.

Portal. I was all prepared to shoot it down, and while I didn't have much fun with it, I couldn't help but realise that it's objectively a great game. Just not for me.

MW2. I know it's the most popular shooter in the world (which really takes some of my indie cred away), and I know there are some serious balance issues, but it's still immense fun.

i was like "wtf, microsoft, halo? that sounds and looks so stupid and below average"

and fter i played the first one, fell in love with the second one and its online, i can't help but love how much fun it is to play, by yourself or with friends its always a blast for me

I find myself in the same boat.

Also, having been a Sonic the Hedgehog kid in the 90's, I was determined to not like like a Mario game. Then I tried Super Mario World, and to my horror discovered it to be not bad. Not as much fun as the Blue Blur, but still okay.

I wanted so much to hate CoD: World at War, but I couldn't. It was much more balanced than either MW installment, genuinely fun and much slower paced, which for me was a plus. That said, I only ever play MW2 when I get bored of TF2 while hanging out at my friend's house. MW2's creators probably laughed when they were asked if they were going to balance the game properly, 90% of the online community is dickheads and noob-tubers, and when is hilariously overly-complicated for someone like me who enjoys TF2. Yes, TF2 is complicated, but when compared with the gajillion possible combinations of equipment available in the CoD series's multiplayer, it looks simple. Plus, no leveling up in TF2. You start out with guns, you occasionally are given different guns, and once you have them all, you're done. You figure out what you like to use, then use it. Personally, I prefer FJ/Wrangler/Gunslinger engineer.

The Mass Effect games, they are so terribly average and really aren't as amazing as people make them out to be. I was rather disgruntled with the first one, and the second one had vastly better game play but the stories are rather average and full of wasted potential.

Now why can't I truly hate it? Because I love sci-fi and sci-fi RPGs are slim pickings so i gotta make due with what I got. I can see so much potential in the series, but it's always squandered and comes off as terribly derivative. Damn my inner sci fi geek!!

Same. Though, I usually try to stay away from FPS's anymore because they all seem to end up the same.
