Am I the only one who wouldn't have minded a second Space Marine?

But yes, this is more of an upgrade than downgrade. I've always hated MMOs.

It's always a real shame to hear that 120 people lost their jobs. But from a business standpoint, this was an excellent move. Finally developers are beginning to realize how outrageous it is for new MMOs to be pumped out every year.

I look forward to playing this game quite a bit. A 40K RPG? Sign me up! I probably would have played it anyway since I like Warhammer stuff (wouldn't call myself a fan just yet). There's no doubt in my mind this can still turn out to be a super fun single player RPG. Who knows, maybe the multiplayer will turn out good too?

I think they'll make it at some point. After all, Space Marine ended with quite the cliffhanger.

Ever since I started playing MMOs I've always said "when an MMO shuts down, they should rerelease it as a singleplayer game" for fan nostalgia.

Good, the last thing I need is another good game getting ruined because it NEEDS to be an MMO.

Realize this more then likely means we are going to get a sub-par single player rpg now instead of a possibly okay mmo for a niche market?

You really can't just turn a game around mid production into something else entirely, either you will end up throwing alot of stuff away and wasting more money or leaving half done stuff in because well you gotta fill time somehow.

This is a sad day, because more then likely we are going to get a bad wh40k game when we could of got a wh40k WORLD to play in. Toss in lay offs and I just feel sad.

And now maybe they'll put in on consoles too now!

was kinda looking forward for a 40k mmo, but whatever, just hope i won't have to play as an ultrasmurf (don't play the tabletop, i'm only really fan of the books, and more i read about the smurfs, less i like them), space wolves or flesh tearers maybe?
Or imperial guard (not sure how you'd fit one of them as protagonist for rpg though).

Well this is good news for me (maybe). I like single player RPGs, but I don't like MMOs since I have to put up with other people and don't have the best connection. Still, the reasoning behind this sudden change makes be very worried that it will be very poor transition from MMO to single, and the game will suffer and not benifit anyone.

Nuuu relic :'(

Then again... Betting on an mmo's success, even with the 40k brand, was a hopeless endeavour at best, basically scrapping what subscribers you can find between wow, Tor, guild wars 2 and who knows what else. The results long term could have been even worst.

The question is now can they salvage a good single player rpg out of this?
A good 40k rpg would be an interesting proposition...

Man, I feel for those folks who got laid off. Can't be easy for them, especially now.

Makes me feel kind of bad to be exited about a singleplayer RPG in WH40k universe. I wonder what exactly this means for the development of the game- Will it still involve WoW style hotkey-based combat? Or will it be a Diablo style clickfest? Or a Hellgate-London style hybrid? Or, will it be a more customizable version of Space Marine's gameplay? Will we get a Quest to find out what happened to Capt. Titus after the events of Space Marine? Will they still want a subscription fee? Most importantly, are there still Adeptus Mechanicus player classes? The tech-priests need more time in the spotlight!

But yeah, people losing jobs is not happy news. Hope they get snatched up by other companies. The Emprah protects the virtuous, right?

Wait, I am confused. The title of the article says the game was downgraded but all I see is an upgrade. Did I miss something?
Because financially speaking, an MMO costs far more to produce than a typical single player console game.(with basic multiplayer thrown in for shits and giggles) MMO's, when done correctly, can turn a profit for years even if they're not top dog. Where a regular console game really only makes money once with a few farts of profit from DLC after the fact.

In terms of quality it's most likely an upgrade, but when it comes to potential profit and investment it's a downgrade.

Damnit, there goes my sale. I already have a single player 40K game, it's creatively called "Space Marine" and while it's fun, I've no real need for another one.

Oh well, I guess Blizzard actually admitting that WoW is on the downturn (or rather, admitting that TOR actually took a noticable chunk of their playerbase) isn't enough for people to stop considering them the benchmark by which all others must compete.

Wow i never thought a developer would click on they couldnt competitive with wow.
Can't compete with WoW? That's odd, because I'm pretty sure The Old Republic was the most successful launch in MMO history and continues to hold the record for highest amount of paying subscribers after release. I could also list the dozen or so MMOs that make bank, but I think you get the idea.

Besides the layoffs I think this is a much better idea, i just never saw the MMO getting very far. So glad it's going to change.

Just once I want a 40K product that does not just focus on Space Marines.

I always found the Imperial Guard way more fun to both play, and to experience.
Getting to play as a Commissar I think would be fun.

Do you want to play like Ciaphas Cain? Or will you HERESY BLAM! everyone in existence?
Hell ANY OTHER FACTION BESIDES SPACE MARINES!

"In the Space Marine future there is only SPACE MARINE!"
BLAH!
I cracked the fuck up. 'IN THE SPACE MARINE FUTURE THERE IS ONLY SPACE MARINE! THE YEAR IS 41-SPACEMARINE AND THE SPACEMARINES FIGHT THE EVIL SPACEMARINES FOR THE UNISPACEMARINES!'

That was the thought that ran through my head.

This game'll be awesome anyway though.

The people losing jobs part is bad news but the shift in game focus is. Dark Millennium becoming an RPG with a lobby type multiplayer element should be way better than an MMORPG. Being a THQ product will mean it will be a DLC frenzy though, just like Dawn of War II and Space Marine.

Still Space Marine multiplayer is kind of fun, it just lacks maps and content. If Dark Millennium fixes those issues it will be fun.
