There isn't a band I know that I could listen to all their songs without skipping them, even the bands I like best

I think I've listened to them, can't recall an opinion about them though. I have too much music to remember everything I listen to

Bloody hell! Picking your favourite band is like picking a footy team, cheering one and booing the other. You know it's just entertainment right? And the band you like might like the bands you don't like.

Eh, whatever, I'll play along. If Metallica and Megadeth are considered thrash (I honestly don't give a shit about genres) then I find they have the most powerful melodies out of the lot. Motorhead is pretty cool, give the Ace Of Spades album a listen. Also, I think the song Painkiller is considered thrash metal from the band Judas Priest, worth adding that to your library. Some other well known ones you should try are Slayer, Testament, Venom, Exodus, Anthrax and Overkill.

What are the big 4? I saw that mentioned in a previous post.

Already been mentioned, but the Big4 are the best place to start with thrash. You can then move on to Testament and Exodus and the other, less successful bands.

Also, if you're in the UK, buy yourself a ticket to the Sonisphere festival: for the first time ever the Big4 will play on the same UK stage. It's gonna be epic.

Thanks mate, I was wondering about Metallica and Megadeth.

When they say Metallica do they mean just the first 4 albums?

can people please stop suggesting the big four! Far too obvious, I'm familiar with some of the most obscure thrash bands in existence. I like Anthrax and Megadeth, but if I start a thrash metal thread, you can assume I'm familiar with these bands.

ok, bring on the hipster jokes.

My personal answer is yes. "Officially", I don't know.

That's good enough for me. I personally don't think they come even close. Actually, I don't even know if I could call it metal either, seems more like hard rock like Guns N Roses. Not that it's a bad thing.

Well, the Big 4 obviously (who I'm going to see, don'tcha know!). Anthrax are the best. Anyone who tells you otherwise is a liar. Aside from that, Death Angel and Testament are pretty good, and Evile are great too, and more modern. Although I wouldn't call them thrash, Lamb of God are pretty thrash influenced and are fucking awesome.

I really like Metallica still, although they've gone way downhill. But hey, they've got five damn near perfect albums, 2 average albums, one awful album and one good album. That's more than most bands. To be honest, when you get down to the more Slayer end of things I start to like it less. I'm not a fan of Death or Black metal either really, it's not my thing. I guess asshole elitists would tell me I only like mainstream metal. But y'know, I couldn't care less.

Out of all the metal subgenres, thrash would have to be the most unappealing to me. I like some of the riffs (especially live, when they sound more solid and atmospheric) and some of Metallica's older songs were alright, but I didn't like it enough to be bothered exploring thrash metal much. I got The Formation of Damnation by Testament for free and I gave it away because it was meh. Still open to listening to new bands, though.

I like some Sepultura, but they're borderline not-thrash.

I'm also somewhat fond of Acrassicauda after watching Heavy Metal in Baghdad. Their music feels genuine.

Wailing guitar sounds, inspired by the wailing of widows.
