Fucking fucking... fuckers The Ratata seemed to pour out from the grass. It would be a surprise if the cacophony didn't draw more trouble... at least there didn't seem to be any Raticate. A flash of violet ran by her, goring the small pokemon. A... Nidorino? It stunned her for a second. The fact that Max had one slipped her mind, and she scanned the crowd for her Nidorina, confused.

She threw out her Ponyta. "Don't start a fucking fire" she warned before smacking it's rump, sending it off into the fray. It used fire sparingly: like the Nidorina it seemed to favor physical moves. It stomped several Ratata into the dust, letting out what sounded to Ellie like war cries.

While her Ekans decided to make a quick snack out of the rat it had coiled, a few more decided to try to attack it while it was indisposed.

"Oh no ya fukkin' don't..."

She threw out her Koffing, which coughed out a few splurts of Sludge on the now eeking rats.

"Heh, not so tough now, eh?"

Caid looked around and saw the other Rockets stomping rats quite easily. There were a lot more of them then she originally thought.

Must'a stirred up a nest're somethin'...

The Rats started retreating slowly with a few of the bolder ones still jumping out for attacks. For the most part however the swarm of Pokemon was over. Fainted Rattatas lay around them in the grass. The cries of more in the field rang out as they retreated.

"I love pounding weak Pokemon." said Max, smiling at his Nidorino. He withdrew it and his Zubat. His weakened Spearow needed healing but he wasn't about to. His Pokemon had to learn to endure pain. He kept it out.

"Follow me and if you fall behind..." he hit the bird. It glared at him, angry, confused and sad. It didn't really understand.

Breaking in Pokemon is annoying as hell.

He noticed Alex was admiring the Machoke and that Leels girl before returning to the head of the column.

I was hoping one would bite your balls off.

The grunts started moving again. Traveling offroad brought with it the dangers of wild Pokemon but it was safer than getting caught by rangers.

Mayu let out a sigh of relief as she watched the Pokemon retreating back into the grass. Her Vulpix trotted back to her with a satisfied look on her face while her own Rattata looked pretty beat up. Koffing had been able to get out unharmed thanks to him floating out of reach. Smiling, she said. "You all did great. Thanks." She withdrew her Pokemon back into their balls so they could rest while Mayu said to herself. "I don't wanna see another Rattata for a long time..N-no offense my Rattata." She pet the ball a little bit before putting them all back on her belt.

Just like it had never happened, they started moving forward again. This time, Ellie found her companion to be a Spearow. The hell? It looked like it was following them, so she assumed it was one of the other thug's. It was awkward for a second. "So... I assume you were fighting Ratata..." If there was anything worse than walking by a grunt you didn't know, it was walking by a pokemon you didn't know. She wasn't even sure if the thing heard her since it was flying around.

"Was it hard?... ... ... I don't think I could take on a horde of angry mice. ... ... ..." Her voice was low, partially because she didn't want anyone else to hear and answer, partially because she was more talking to herself now.

Getting to kick the shit out of a bunch of rats was supremely satisfying. He was almost sad to see them go. Just as well, he supposed. If they hadn't retreated he would've stood here all day, just watching.

Anyway, he returned his relatively unharmed pokemon and resumed walking, feeling a little better now.

Scott continued to walk with the group, still walkin with Mayu. Nobody seemed to notice that he didn't bother fighting. Scott just stood in the mess and watched. Scott didn't want to throw his brand new Pokemon into a horde of Rattata, it would have been pumbled. Scott noticed Dirk walking behind him, still limping but only slightly. Scott slowed until is pace was meet by Dirk

"I grabbed these from the farm house for you before... Well you know. Dunno if you still need'em but no reason for them to go to waste" Scott presented a bottle of painkillers to Dirk.

"...Thanks." He grudgingly took the bottle. He'd wanted to avoid painkillers mainly due to it being more difficult to properly gauge just how injured you were if you'd had some. Of course that didn't really seem to be a problem now. All he had to do now was walk and they'd probably help keep him upright.

He also didn't really want any help. "I suppose I owe you one then." He opened he bottle and shook a couple of capsules out, swallowing them.

"Where'd you fly off to you little fucker?" said Max, looking up and down the column of grunts. He nearly collided with Ellie before waving at the Pokemon furiously. It flew down to his hand and he hit it, making it tumble to the Earth.

"Don't fly off without me telling you to. You will learn to obey." said Max to the little bird. It was tired and struggled to get up. Finally it got up under its own steam.

"That's better. Don't depend on anyone but yourself you little bastard. Next time I want to see you kick ass." he said, finally letting it back into its ball. He rejoined the column beside Ellie, silently thinking about camp preparations.

"Sorry Lieutenant, I didn't think... I didn't think the Spearow was yours." she stammered. "It was my fault that it was over here." Even if she had nothing against the whole 'making it tougher' thing, but she felt like she had interrupted something important. To Max at least. She realized that he was deep in thought about something, closing her mouth in the middle of her next thought.

Mayu continued following the Grunts in front of her while also looking around for any more potential ambushes. She had managed to get out unharmed from the rattata, but if there was another one, with bigger Pokemon, she didn't think she would fare well against them.

"It's not your fault, the damn thing is too new." said Max, shaking the Pokeball. He walked beside her silently for a few hours. The Tauros collapsed suddenly collapsed ahead. Grunts started beating the thing angrily.

"What's going on?" asked Max as the Rockets in the rear caught up to the fallen Pokemon.

"It just stopped moving sir." said a Grunt, kicking at it. "Weak piece of shit."

Max stopped the Grunt.

"You're not helping any." he said, pulling out a potion from his pack. He sprayed it slowly over the creature's legs. It got up shakily then snorted. A grunt kicked at its feet and it energetically dodged the abuse.

"Did any of you idiots think to defend it from those rats earlier?"

The blank look they gave him told him everything. He grabbed a hapless grunt by the collar of his uniform and threw him into a dip in the field.

"If we lose Alex will be pissed. Take care of that Pokemon dammit, I don't like wasting potions on our transport." he said, slapping the rear of the Pokemon. It started moving again. The tossed grunt got to his feet.

"Yes sir, watch the Tauros sir!"

Now is he scared of me or of Alex? I wish I could tell...

The Pokemon started moving ahead, a grunt pulling out a whip to urge it forward.

Lieutenant helped the Tauros...

She didn't know why she was surprised, most likely because of the abuse he just handed out to the Spearow. Still, it was embarrassing that she hadn't thought about defending the Tauros either. She cleared her throat, not sure whether to talk or not. "On Cinnabar, we had a Dudrio pull our things in a cart. All that sand, we couldn't get a normal Tauros to do the work..." She tried to make it sound like she was just making a comment, in case he wasn't in a good mood.

"I imagine there wasn't that much you needed to pull to the boats. If I remember right, we're laying low on that island." said Max, watching the whipped Pokemon pick up speed.

"Hit it harder! Don't let it think it can slow down again!"

"Well, we didn't go walking miles in a line. Well, there was this one time when we had to deliver some crates to this old building... I wonder what was in it. I heard that some of the grunts that tried to take some boxes or even open them a little disappeared."

She grinned a little. She missed the scenery on the islands, at least. That one incident was the most that happened during her time there. "I wasn't there very long though. Just the month before I was put on the boat here. The Sevii Islands were paradise though. There were no police, no rangers..." She felt a twinge of homesickness. She enjoyed it there. "I'm definitely not complaining about this team. You and the Commander are very good too. You have to take care of a lot here in the big cities. I guess we just didn't have as much to worry about there. Sometimes the Lieutenant would let us just go swimming in the ocean. It was hot in the summer too, and we could take off our uniforms and jump in the water."

Max thought about it. It did sound like fun but there was nothing of value there. If you were posted there you wouldn't have much to do. No chance at promotion. No break ins... Just stupid natives getting turned into grunts.

"Yellow Team had a Sevii grunt once. Wouldn't shut up about his home. Ended up getting the bat." he said casually. "I'd like to retire there but Giovanni has lots for us to do here."

If anyone has it figured out, it's the boss. The Rockets are almost the only gang left in Kanto.

There was a snicker from one of the other grunts beside her, whom she recognized as the one she ran into by mistake earlier. "I'd like to see you without your uniform on"

Now, if that was the Lieutenant, or the Commander, Ellie would have let it slide. But this was a grunt, same as she was, if not lower. And she had a feeling Max wouldn't care.

Without hesitating, she closed her fist around her brass knuckles and punching him hard in the face. It was enough to stagger him, and make his nose bleed a little.

"*****!"

She was ready to back off, having made her point, but this was apparently a fight now as he lunged at her. He grabbed a fistful of her hair as she tried to step back, yanking her forward and kneeing her in the stomach, right under her ribcage. The pain was sharp, knocking the air out of her lungs, but she immediately grabbed his leg and knocked the other one from under him, landing him on his back, with her on top, pinning him between her legs. He coughed before grabbing her ass as he tried to push her off.
"I'd like you on top of me later tonight"
She punched him again, harder, this time slamming his cheek.

"Okay, break it up." said Max, amused at how fast the grunt had been taken down. This girl was good looking and a good fighter. A dangerous combination. Better to have her loyal and out of trouble.

Hauling Ellie off the idiot, he looked at the bloody mess. The grunts around in the column started moving again.

"Fuck sakes grunt, get up. We've got to move and picking fights isn't how we get to Lavender fast."

He cracked his knuckles.

"If I see you stopping this march again we'll have issues." he menaced, moving up to the bleeding guy's personal space. The grunt, sensing that he'd have to get back at Ellie later, backed down and fell back into line.

"Nice moves but don't beat up our guys too much. We need them in fighting form for our real enemies. If you have issues, come to me." said Max, looking at the sweating girl.

Back on task Max.

"Get going." he said, pointing at the line of grunts.

"S-sorry Lieutenant!" She bowed, wincing slightly as her voice cracked. Ugh... of all the places to hit me... Breathing hurt. She rubbed the area slightly, sure it was going to bruise even more. "I won't do it again." She had half expected him to hit her, but when she looked up, he had already walked off. She stood up, wincing, and continued to walk, making sure to stay away from the grunt she had nicknamed 'Matt' in her head. He looked like a 'Matt'.

The group marched onwards. A few Rattatas struck again but never in great numbers and in the distance they started to see the skyscrapers of Saffron shining in the dark.

"Isn't that the capital?"

"That's Indigo, dumbass."

"Might as well be the capital. Most cops, most money..."

They started to circle around the city to the North. The night was getting progressively more and more lighter as the sun started peaking over the edge of the East.

"There, that grove of trees!" pointed Alex with his bat. He was sitting on top of the Tauros by this point, lazily straddling the big, heaving Pokemon as it turned.

Saving your energy for something vile I bet.

Max came over to Alex.

"I think we should be further away from Saffron. It's a big city and..."

The bat came gently against his lips.

"No discussion, that's the spot."

Max backed away, starting to issue orders.

"Set up tents but make sure to cover them with branches. Ignore the bugs, get in close and stay hidden. Saffron has powerful trainers, we need to be careful. You there, secure the Tauros. No beer tonight."

That last order made the grunts moan but Alex looked at them.

"Max might be too careful sometimes but no drinking. We might be able to do some raids if I feel like it. The first man I see drunk..." He swung the bat mightily. The implied threat couldn't be more obvious.

As the tents sprung up, a Pokemon sprinted away hurriedly out of sight.

"Post sentries!" ordered Max.

"I'll go on the first rotation. You, you and you are with me." he said, pointing at Dirk, Leela and Dylan.

If Alex doesn't care about us all getting arrested, that's his problem.
