Leela had set up shop at the Pokecenter, along with a finger-counting number of grunts who were waiting for their pokemon to be healed. The aspiring Rocket grunt had had her Machoke and team healed and was just handing around the place. It'd been a while since she'd just walked around a place like this, a bit before she'd joined up with the Rockets. So far, all she'd found to not like was Alex, but that was a given for anyone that knew him she figured, the damned wannabe superheros everywhere, and the fact that there was another grunt holding a bloody face walking up to her.

"Alux wans ou at tha Twoer."

"What'd you say Mumbles?"

"Alugs wins hue atda Twoer."

Bloody mucus had started to escape the cloth the grunt had been using to hold his nose in. Leela understood him and headed off, Machoke in tow.

She arrived at the Tower, Alex already there as told.

"So what'd you want, boss.?"

Sorry for the AWOL business, stuff came up.

Wex watched the girl who was called Leels walk into the tower. The sun was starting to rise over the town and the shadows were retreating.

"Where to sleep..."

Careful not to occupy a house full of hostile grunts, he ended up in the attic of an old house on the edge of the town. It was full of damaged furniture but he wasn't picky. As long as he was alone. Puffing up his Rocket hat, he made it a makeshift pillow and lay down. Except sleep wouldn't come. Couldn't come.

He swore softly, staring at the ceiling. He hated himself. Weak, worthless, no Pokemon, no power, nothing. Just another body...

He closed his eyes and lay there, his thoughts swirling in his head.

* * * * * * * * * *

Alex hit the tower employee again.

"There has to be another way up!"

The tour guide just stared at him blankly, whimpering. She was just a kid, seventeen. Working a summer job.

"Tell me! My boss gave me special orders, you know? Told me to-"

"So what'd you want, boss?"

Leels was there. Dropping the terrified girl, he walked up to her and kissed her gently on the lips.

"Yes, perfect..." he whispered.

"The people in the tower above have moved a giant rock or gravestone or something over the stairs. I need your Machoke to push it away! Do it! Now!"

Alex was shaking violently as if he was sick. A grunt came to him.

"Sir, I-"

Alex backhanded him without even looking at him.

"I don't care how long it takes, just get that rock out of the way."

He stumbled out into the sunlight and vomited right by the door. He then walked away, calling out loudly.

"Wildcat! Where arrrre you?"

"The people in the tower above have moved a giant rock or gravestone or something over the stairs. I need your Machoke to push it away! Do it! Now!"

Leela spat on the ground after Alex's "kiss", she'd had better, and tasted better bile too.

"Right away, boss. First you gotta point the way, though. Big gravestones are a bit of a common sight around this town unless you're blind, you know?"

But Alex had already stumbled outside and had thrown up.

Idiot

Scott was walking through the streets near the Pokemon Tower when he saw Alex stumble out and almost throw-up all over his own shoes.

"Wildcat! Where arrrre you?"

"Ellie..."Scott thought to himself. "I'm not dealing with his nonsense right now." Scott quickly turned down another street looking for a shop, the city was starting to wake up and start it's day. Shops were opening and the sun was rising higher in the sky. Scott quickly darted into a house being watched by another Rocket. With a quick nod to purple haired girl drifting off while leaning on the wall he went into the house. Scott scurried to the closet and found a light blue hoody and threw it on over his uniform. Don't feel like being a Rocket today. And with that he darted out of the house and down the street. He came up to a small cafe that was just opening for the morning. He went in and found a seat.

A cute waitress with red hair approached him. "Morning hunny, my name is Kimberly, and I'll be waiting on ya today. Can I get you started with a coffee?"

Scott blushed and looked down at the table, he looked back up and said: "Actually, I know what I want. Just some bacon and eggs with white toast please, no coffee... water... please."

"How would you like your eggs?"

"Fried, over easy, please."

"Coming right up."

Not a moment later the waitress served Scott his water, and in almost no time his food arrived. The cafe was empty, quiet, it was nice. Scott ate slowly, enjoyed himself. When he was done, he left the cost of the bill and a tip on the table. Walking back up the road he saw the purple haired grunt again. He walked by her again into the house and went up the stairs. He found the master bedroom and laid down on the bed. Just before he closed his eyes to go to sleep he release his Meowth who purred happily and laid next to him. Scott drifted off to sleep.

"You're a worthless piece of shit!"

Whack!
Whack!
Whack!

Everything was red.

Everything was always red.

Ellie bolted up, breathing hard. It felt like a Tauros had rammed into her chest, and that was before the pain in her hands came back. That felt more like Beedrill stings. Most of it had scabbed over. She scratched some of the crusted blood off of her cheek. Damn splinters... The electricity and water were both long shut off. She took a full water bottle from the fridge, using it to wash her hands. The bigger splinters and glass shards were easy to take out, but it reopened some of the cuts.

She was about to go back to sleep somewhere else. She had had enough of this place.

""Wildcat! Where arrrre you?"

Her hand froze inches from the doorknob. The Commander... did he know where she went? It would be worse if she hid... she took a deep breath and opened the door, going into the street. She walked closer to the sound, stopping a few feet away.

"Y-yes, Commander?"

Caid took the time that they had while the Machoke move the boulder very leisurely. Not only did she wander around the almost vacant town with her Ekans draped across her shoulders, but she also had unwilling company of a certain brown-haired boy. She'd decided he'd had enough time to himself and whatever other Rockets he hung around with. Eventually, she let him go off again and spent the time thinking about other Rockets to hang out with, as she was getting a little tired of only really ever hanging out with Sandy, or Brian as he was known to others.

She eventually made her way into the main floor of the tower, and spent some more time wandering from grave to grave to see the Pokemon that others lost, being rather quiet compared to the louder and more rowdy Rockets around.

Wex felt a chill go up his spine. There was the commander shouting, the sound of someone in pain and screaming. It didn't take him long to realize who the voice belonged to or what was happening. They rampaged through the entire house, the Commander chasing and catching. It wasn't a pleasant thing to listen to but it wasn't something Wex hadn't heard before.

Alex always played with his toys.

When it was over the commander broke open the back door.

"See you tomorrow Wildcat. And stop that bleeding, you'll get it over my uniform if you don't take care of it."

He whistled and walked down the street. Wex lay still, holding his breath. Finally, he had to come down.

The room, if it was possible, was even more destroyed than it was before. Spotting bare flesh for an instant, he ducked around part of a broken piano.

"H-hello? Are you okay?"

* * * * * * * * * * * * *

Max woke instantly and slipped out of the bed he had commandeered. He waited and the footsteps came up the stairs. Squinting in the dim light shining through the curtains Max could see Alex limping into the bedroom.

He collapsed onto the bed Max had been occupying only a moment before and was instantly asleep. Finally, when he was convinced Alex was really asleep, Max slid out carefully from under the bed.

He looked at his commander. The wound on his left arm was bleeding again but he was probably too drugged up to feel it. Maybe he'd bleed out on his own. Max looked at the bat he had dropped next to the bed.

I could end it right now. Nobody in Yellow would care.

But he couldn't. Everyone in Yellow might hate the Commander but all would be willing to snitch to Proton about it. And Proton...

He left the room, left the house and shielded his eyes from the sun. It was late in the afternoon now. Most of the grunts should have changed their shifts watching and guarding the entrances to the town.

"Tell me what's new." he said to a Yellow grunt who was walking along the street.

"Alex flipped and beat up at least four grunts."

"What's new." he snapped.

"There's a rock. That girl with the Machoke is pushing it and she's got a start on it but it'll be some time before we can enter the tower."

He caught up with a Green grunt who had taken on patrol as well.

"Where was this drug lab?"

"In the basement of that run down house on Stargate Road. Now can I go get some food at that cafe or what?"

Max glanced at the cafe. Rockets were milling around inside.

"Just make sure the owners don't skip town."

He walked slowly towards the older part of the town. Lavender was still an eerie place, even with the sun up high. Even with all the looting going on it seemed as if something in the town was watching them, waiting...

Ellie held her hand over her mouth, trying her best to not bleed everywhere. She had bit her tongue, among other things, and it hadn't stopped bleeding. She pulled her shirt down with the other hand. Her pants were somewhere, and her jacket was in another room. Was it? She couldn't remember. She couldn't see. Everything was blurry. Everything was blurry! There was a noise. "Who's there? What do you want!?" She scrambled up, scooting back until she hit the wall. "WHAT DO YOU WANT FROM ME?!?"

The Commander gave her something sweet. But it was bad. It was worse.

She was breathing hard, and fast. Her pupils were dilated, almost completely blown. Even if she could have focused on Wex, she wouldn't have seen him. Everything was dark, and moving, and crawling towards her with gnashing teeth. There were eyes and mouths everywhere. She felt like there were a thousand ants crawling all over her skin, like she was falling, and the wind was rushing through her hair. It felt like she was on fire, but cold at the same time.

She saw the old woman, looming up in front of her, smelling of ash. "I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I didn't... It wasn't my fault..." she kept muttering, staring blankly at the ceiling.

Ahead of Max and also having headed where the drug lab had been hidden, Addison was lurking just off the side of the road, surveying the house that it had been under. She had been planning on sneaking inside if it looked suitably deserted. See if she could scavenge any supplies or products that might have been left behind. Especially the Gloom honey. It formed a core component of several of her concoctions and while she could always extract more from her Gloom, that was time she could put to better use if she didn't need to bother with reharvesting enough first.

From the outside the building appeared just like any other run down wreck. You'd never have known there was anything special about it at a glance. Hadn't eaten or slept since the rescue. She got rest enough while captured and there'd be time to eat later. For now a bottle of water would suffice. She'd been watching a while though. The commander of yellow had been inside and left. 2 yellow grunts were also inside. They hadn't left yet. By the sounds of things they were trashing the above ground floors of the house. That was fine. Just so long as they left the basement intact so she could scavenge it.

After a while though, the sounds of destruction had subsided. It was quieter now. Which could be good or bad. On one hand, they might have had their fill of destruction. On the other hand they might have stopped breaking things in preperation to burn the place. That would render all chance of recovering anything nil. On the other hand, she couldn't just saunter in with impunity either. Not yet anyway. Green's failure still marked her as one of the lowest rungs on the ladder. She'd need to redeem herself some before she could hope to walk in on yellow grunts without risking a beatdown.

Her indecision however, became a secondary concern at the sound of someone approaching along the road. The yellow lieutenant. She saluted as he approached. "Lieutenant. Can I help you?"

Wex took a step forward. She was starting to cry and was scratching her arms violently. She was bleeding all over and well, she was only half dressed. The tank top was torn and there weren't any pants. She didn't seem to be in a state where she cared though. It had blood seeping from cuts underneath, staining the white fabric and it was spreading.

"Calm the fuck down. I'm a team member, I'm not goi-"

A broken 2X4 was swung at him faster than he thought she could move. Whatever was wrong with her hadn't taken away her reflexes. She lunged at him again forcing him to roll into a bathroom.

"Back off... Back off!!" She screamed, fumbling with the board and it fell to the ground with a clatter.

This fucking ***** is going to nail me before I can help her. Can't say I didn't try.

Wex retreated, leaving her sitting and rocking against a wall. He dashed out into the yard and saw the sun reflecting off a bald...

Fuck.

Wex dashed over to the uncut grass and lay down flat next to what might have been a dog house. It was smoking but it seemed as if the wind had killed the fire young. Curious, he crawled beside the opening. There was a rusty pole, blackened by recent flame and a chain. It was attached to a collar that was strangely large for a dog...

He noticed a pile of ashes and half burned picture frames. Sorting through the still hot pile, he pulled out a half burned picture of a young woman and a Growlithe pup. There were little white fences along the grass and the dog was in the air. Training for some show no doubt. It was funny that someone would try burning it. Ellie..?

He tucked the picture away and slunk back into the tall grass. He waited for the Lieutenant to walk up.

* * * * * * *

"Lieutenant. Can I help you?"

It was the grunt who wore a stained labcoat. She was Green team but didn't have the look of insolence most of them wore like a badge of absurd pride. This one knew she was unworthy of her uniform.

"You can lead me to this drug lab you mentioned earlier."

"Why should w-"

"You were arrested by civilians, not cops. Any evidence or information that might be used against us would still be there. Makes sense we should take care of it."

Don't fuck it up. Don't fuck it up. Ridner is probably waiting for the chance to beat me down again.

"Well, some of your grunts are in there already."

"Let's go joi-"

There was a loud scream. It was a girl's voice. Hysterical shouting erupted from a nearby house.

"In there I'm guessing?" said Max, staring at the open back door of the house. Addison nodded.

They walked towards the house, which had lapsed into silence.

It darted out of the door. She would have chased the shadow, but a bright beam of light made her scream. It felt like molten metal in her skull. Dark. She needed dark.

The basement

It would have brought back more memories if she hadn't been high out of her mind. Since when did the stairs last so long? They wouldn't get her here. She would make sure they couldn't get her. But what was this? Colors, bright colors and smells everywhere. It was like Mary's room. "RAAGH!" She flipped the table.

The glass crashing sounded beautiful. She could swear she saw every shard as it flung itself far from the scene. She threw some glasses into the counter. She could feel them break. She could taste them break. Ghosts flew out of each glass, bouncing around the ceiling before running out of the door. One of them flew right into her. But it felt good, like a helpful ghost. It made her excited. Made her feel powerful.

Max entered the house and the sounds of destruction in the basement echoed up the stairs. There was a sudden movement to his right and his Nidorino was out in an instant. Growling into the dark corner of the house, a hurt Nidorina crawled out. Max relaxed.

Ellie. But what the fuck are you doing here?

Going down the stairs he was greeted by an shocking site. The basement was full of broken lab equipment. Papers were ripped, a table flipped, glass everywhere. At the epicentre of this carnage lay Ellie, lying panting on her side. She didn't have any pants on and had a glazed look in her eyes.

Careful not to step on the largest shards, Max walked gingerly next to his grunt. He ignored Addison's reaction to the scene.

"What did Alex do to you..." he muttered, holding her up a little. She stared blankly at him, concious but not... there...

Carrying her up the steps, he turned to Addison.

"Well, destroy any incriminating evidence if you see some. Seems like Ellie decided to ruin your equipment."

He glanced at a corner.

"Save the drugs. They're still good."

He entered what may have once been a living room. Getting Nidorino to clear debris off of a sagging couch, he set down Ellie. He started looking for her pants as her Pokemon came to her side.

I should be more angry at you. But I guess... Well, it didn't matter.

It hurt though. No matter what he tried to tell himself, he had felt something... Alex had taken this from him too. He broke everything he touched and Max had just... walked away.

It would have happened anyway. You'd just be dead, you stupid idiot. Focus on the mission.

A moment of lucidity hit Ellie after a while. Almost wished that she hadn't: it felt like shit. She put an arm over her eyes. "Rrr... reee?" That fucking pokemon was nudging her. She would have hit it if it weren't a fucking poison type. Last time she hit it without a shovel she was put in the hospital. She didn't need more poison in her blood right now. Instead she whacked it with a cushion. Didn't nearly get her point across, but well, what could you do.

Wait, what!?

She was on the couch. Last thing she remembered, she wasn't on the couch. There was someone else in the house, but who? Her vision was still blurry: she couldn't see whoever it was going through the rooms. When the figure came closer though, holding her... pants...

"Lieutenant!"

Her throat was dry, and the single work cracked. "A... uh... I-I'm so sorry sir I..." What little she did remember quickly vanished the more she thought about it. All she could remember was the rage, and then the pain. What was she going to say to the Lieutenant??? Pantsless, covered in blood... the only way it could be worse was if she was a Green grunt. She quickly grabbed her pants and put them on. The burning in her arms had reduced to pleasant spikes of sharp sensations when she moved. Still, a bath quickly moved up her to-do list.

Scott shot awake to the sound of scream. He sat up almost immediately tossing his Pokemon to the floor. Scott's Meowth looked at him with disapproval. A crash and a bang followed by another scream, Scott got up and ran out of the house past the purple-hair grunt again, Meowth in toe. Scott saw Max and grunt adorned in a lab coat enter the house next door. Assuming they were also investigating the screams Scott followed. By the time Scott entered the house Max was placing Ellie down on the a couch, the other grunt wasn't in the room.

"A... uh... I-I'm so sorry sir I..."

"What? Sorry? He almost killed her this time. He needs to go..."

This was ridiculous. Ellie stood up. "I'm sorry Lieu... lieutenant. I'm fine." She looked in Scott's direction with a more hostile glance. She had recognized his voice, but his face was blurred. "I'm fine." How much of her wounds were from the Commander? How much were from her own anger? "I came here on my own. I knew what could happen, and I made my decision. I accept the consequences." She would have stormed out, but the feeling of her eyes burning out were still fresh in her mind.

Nausea made her sway on her feet. "I'm just tired from the trek. Sorry for disturbing you." Laying back down felt so good. She felt like she would fall off if she didn't hold onto the cushion.

"I'm fine." ... "I came here on my own. I knew what could happen, and I made my decision. I accept the consequences."

"Oh I bet you're just fine. And I understand now, you're not loyal, you're not a good little grunt, you're a fucking idiot. Let him kill you, fuck it." Scott wasn't angry just frustrated.

Scott turned to Max "And I stand by what I said. You may not like me, and quite frankly I don't care, but at least you know where I stand." Scott turned to leave.

Rex never bothered to leave the Pokemon Center, as he was perfectly content with sitting there, contemplating things; at least until the opportunity for something vicious reared it's head. A soliloquy began to take shape within the confines of his twisted brain as his ever-present grin twisted higher.

New friends, new chums, new people to assist me. All others around me only exist to fulfill my needs, whether they think they do or not. I have my ways of bending minds and bodies to my will, and only rarely does it involve brutality, though I do so love brutality. Alas, if i went about every action with brutality, I wouldn't have any pawns to myself. And that's why the mind is more sinister than that iron fist. You can crush a man's soul with your fist, but you can only destroy a man with your mind. You can only cause a man to bring about his own demise with your mind. Deceit and lies are the most savory of meats, and they're always a dish best served hot...

"Caligula" gave a short chuckle at his thoughts.

Max watched Scott leave the house.

You don't want Alex around? Shocking, truly fucking shocking. I bet you're hoping I'll be dumb enough to get caught doing it though.

"You're not well. Sober up, I don't know when we'll need to pull out. I'll have a grunt check on you in an hour."

He left her then, climbing down the stairs.

"Well?" he asked Addison who was still in the basement.

* * * * * * * * *

Wex lay against the wall, having listened in on the events happening inside the house. Scott wanting the commander dead and the lieutenant letting him walk away with that... Interesting.

The sick girl was at least talking sense now. Wex would have felt bad if she had somehow killed herself after what the Commander did to her. It was interesting.

Well, beats sentry duty. You never learn anything standing around.

He made his way over to the Pokemon center after sneaking away. Scott didn't notice him as he walked down the main street, no doubt stewing over Ellie. It was funny. Ellie was cute but Leels eyecandy too and there were a few Green team grunts around of the other sex too.

If he had been feeling up to it, he might have gone out after one of them but Wex's exhaustion finally caught up with him. Seeing Mayu sleeping on a couch in the center, Wex found a recliner and shut his eyes. It was comfortable.

"Well?"

By the time Max returned, Addison had combed most of what remained of the basement lab. "I've managed to salvage a few things sir. The first batch of drugs, some of my notes and samples.." Not as much as I'd like though, she added mentally.

"There wasn't too much in the way of evidence. Anymore at least." she added as an afterthought. "The most I found was a hat one of the lab team must have dropped. In a happy accident though, much of the necessary destruction seems to have been carried out by our friend upstairs. All anyone will find down here is just broken glass and chemical stains at best. Nothing to link it to us."

She paused, thinking. "Regarding the grunt upstairs sir, the one we found down here. Is she, or for that matter, any of your other subordinates in need of medical attention before the commander moves us on? I make a point of keeping a first aid kit handy."

Max shrugged. If she knew a way of getting Ellie on her feet quicker she was welcome to try.

"Go attend to her then. I'm going to take a walk."
