I always use Diego Shepard for my ME games, he's been reincarnated 3 times now, with me trying to make him look like my original ideal. Number 3 has promise so far.

In Fallout 3 I named one of my characters Mystery Blue Hitman, for no reason other than "why the f*** not?"

Well, my friend named everyone "Bob" in Final Fantasy VII.
According to him, the results were hilarious.
Naming Cloud after yourself can get very confusing in Final Fantasy if your name happens to be 'Zack'.

-.-
I'm guessing in that version of the game, he never quite gets over the whole "living someone else's life" thing :D

I just name all of my character Kraken, or some variation of that. It rarely comes up in games nowadays since everything is voice acted, so it doesn't really matter to me. I'm dull when it comes to names. I pretty much name all my video game pets the same way to. It's always some variation of Urist McDog, with dog replaced by whatever the pet is.

I tend to stick with the default. In Mass Effect, my character is Jane Shepard (which was the default name suggested by the game).
In ME, my character was named "Miranda," because I'd watched Serenity recently. Got amusing in ME2.

I think my male Shep was just the default, though.
You named your character after a planet.
No, the OTHER Miranda in the movie.
My point was that you named a character after a PLANET.
Your grasp of the obvious is still impressive.

I'm fond of Words, being a variant of my general-purpose identity, which is also my username here on this site

Or if you commonly use it as a name. >.>

My brother always names his characters in the FF games that have default names as (default name)SPAM for some reason.

I name them after what I think of them usually, unless they're a character I've dreamt up beforehand.

So, about half of my characters have names like 'Fuckface McFaggotarse', 'Whoreslut O'Bitchywhine', 'Dicksucker Bulgeneck' and 'Shithead McGee'. I need to think of better names, because one day they will make a game where the NPCs can say your character's name and I'll have to go around hearing them yelling 'HELLO THERE SHIHEAD MCGEE!'.

I normally keep it simple. I use Luke for most of my games. Every now and then I'll make like a 'Destrusi' or something else new just for the fun of it

If it's a Zelda game, I typically name my character Link. Otherwise, depends on what I'm fixated on at the time or how creative I'm feeling; I named my New Vegas character Professor Layton, and my Mass Effect character Awngee (it's an in-joke).

I don't really do silly names of that sort.

Rob is my default name for everything.

No, that's not my real name, in case you were wondering.

I called a character on New Vegas 'The Evildoer' for some reason, he is purging the wasteland of life

I normally use Larsmir for male characters, and for females Miriel. However, if I'm going for a certain type of character (perhaps a dwarf miner, a norse woman, etc) I'll think up something on the fly that fits with the character.

I remember in an old GBA game I named myself 'Fuckhead', and the follower you get in the game was particularly unlucky and got the name 'Cuntface'. I was about 12 at the time so I thought it was hilarious.

I do one of two things:

Option 1:
I use the original names on the first playthrough, then give them the nicknames I used to refer to them on every subsequent playthrough. For instance, in FFVII, Barrett became Barry and Vincent became Vinnie.

Option 2:
I give them names based on their class, skill, primary function, or other attribute. For instance, I name the healer Chernobyl because juxtaposition is fun and I always give the first fan-service female character the name Eros.
