I tend to use the same batch of names that I've used in various stories over the years (although, oddly enough, I never actually end up playing them anything like the real character) and when I get bored of that I use whatever name comes to mind.

I kinda wish I could rename my ManShep to Sheploo, though, because unfortunately I was boring and left him with the default appearance.

Also, wouldn't calling yourself Revan in KOTOR
be a little redundant? Hi, my name is Darth Revan Revan, folks!

In Mass Effect I kept Shepard on default. I only make changes when a game asks me to make a character from scratch

I name my main character after the Kane of the biblical myths, which seems quite fitting as the main character in almost any RPG is a very angry man who kills everything.

I usually use Aura or some other name referencing whatever I'm currently obsessed with. my last character was named Aura Nyoroza. If you get all 3 refrences in the name you get a cookie :D
HINT the last name has 2 :p

if im lazy i name my female characaters Mara. I could never find a good default male name though ^_^0

Well, I named my Shepard Jack after Jack from Lost.

Normally I generate random names until I find a first name and last name I like, then put them together.

Isn't the biblical name 'Cain', as in 'Cain and Abel'?

I tend to pick Scottish-sounding names like 'Ewan' or 'Fiona', they're great for fantasy gaming and you can get away with them in ME given the traditional-sounding surname.

Well yes, but if you're more geek than actual historian, you'll use the name Kane from the command and conquer series. They're the same person, but Joe(the actor) is too cool to not use the typo. Like Mortal Kombat.

I like making up names, but once i get used to the character, I always ALWAYS think of a better name. Its games like Oblivion and Fallout NV that do this to me.

Or, in a storyish sort of game like Final Fantasy, I just use the default. I feel like I'd be ruining the game otherwise.

Jasper, or Jeffs, or Jasper Jeffs. The "s" on "Jeffs" is important, it loses it's charm without it. I have a load of other ones too, but I'm not giving them out, because they're mine! I like my brothers though; Senor Bum.

For female character I tend to use "Karryn" (after my FFXI character) or some variation on the name, like "Caryn" or "Karyn".

For male characters I don't really have a set name. And sometimes I just make names up for either gender after some sort of theme. In Dragon Age I named characters after cities that are historically significant to Islam, although it started as a reference to Chrono Trigger.

I usually use random names from the various other characters I've named in other games. Usually things like: Kraven, Tork, Ozmund, Xieh, Mauzer, Gould

I am uncreative so I usually use my anglo or indian name. And in mass effect I just named him Shepard, yep shepard shepard is my characters name that way I can pretend people call him by his first name.

I usually go for names that sound well in the context.
In oblivion it was Tha-meer, Telmar and some other.
in fallout 3 it was Jimmy and Kas and Katie.
in Mass Effect though I always just went for the simple 'John' and 'Jane'

come to think of it. That's probably going to bite me in the ass since all my different Mass Effect 2 playthroughs have been done by the same 'John'. they all have the same level so how am I going to know the difference?
