Honestly, any religion which doesn't demand everyone has to be in their religion, because they need to be "saved" from themselves. There aren't to many religions like that >.<
But seriously I don't know what to believe, religion is cleary false but science has too many answers and when it comes to the universe's beginning, science doesn't make any sense.
Im an Atheist, and you can be religious....aslong as you dont count religion to mean the belief in a amlighty creator (or several of them) i visit the temple near my university to converse with our orange and sometimes gold wearing friends to talk philosophy (the focus of my degree)
and they dont think its a religion...unless you believe religion is an organized group with aims and focuses in life.
so an atheist can be religious, just not in the sense most people seem to think religious means.
Like the 300 other people in this thread, buddhism. Perhaps because it's more of an actual life-philosophy than a religion and that it's ideas are based around humans and not divine beings who'se existence cannot be proved.
That said, I do have a thing for roman and greek mythology too, though I suppose that's not a real 'religion'.
The morals are exceptional, and deal with respecting each other and doing whats right.
You love your family, you love your mate, you don't get frisky in public. You also don't ask your god for forgiveness, you go to the person and ask for their forgiveness.
So, if I were to adopt a religion, I would convert to judaism.
I would pick a religion that isn't completely full of itself and thinks that everything is a "sin" and are constantly paranoid about the apocalypse, as well as knocking at my door at 3:00 in the morning to talk to me about their god, which in return they are presented with my door to their face. ^_^
Shinto, definitely. I may not be religious, but the idea is everything having a "soul" of its own is very charming. Not only animals and plants, also chairs, tables, storms, the wind, etc. Also, it doesn't impose itself on other religions, its rituals are fascinating and it teaches the same things as buddhism (living in peace and harmony, etc).
Also, it doesn't have a name, but worshipping the Valar could be interesting ^^. Yavanna, Ulme, Mandos, Varda, the whole lot. Also, besides the Valar, the Maia, like Mithrandir, whose Maia name escapes me.
I imagine Buddhists would vote for Buddhist, as am I.
Id quite like the fundamentalist Christians with the earth is less than 10000 years old and fossils are a test of faith stuff... If they werent constantly trying inflict their beliefs on the rest of us, petitioning the government, pushid ID in schools, bombin abortion clinics etc.
It does take real effort to ignore evidence like that.
Ok, well what christians say that dinsaurs didn't exist? And I hope you don't mean literal bombing of abortion clinics, although I'm am completely opposed to it myself. And can you really say that you agree with everything your government says? Some things are petitioned for the best.
ehh...I'm pretty sure that the bible makes some referrences to dinosaurs, I'm not feeling like looking it up now though. I'm not sure what christians you hang around with, that "inflict" their beliefs on you, but Most of my christian friends never force it on me, and are unerstanding. I respect them for sharing their beliefs though, and when you think about it, if you thought your beliefs were the only way to heaven, than you would have to hate someone pretty badly to not want to share it with them.
You'll see I was referring to fundamentalist Christians. The ones who believe that the whole bible is a historical document with each line being fact, no metaphor to be seen. They are out there, believing fossils carbon date more than 10,000 years old (older than the earth according to the old testaments literal interpretation) as a test from god. That's a pretty shitty god who'll try to trick you into not believing in him so he can send you to hell.
Im well aware that there are moderate Christians out there. they were not the people I was talking about. There are Extremist Christians who have attacked abortion clinics and staff in America. Do a quick search or if you're too lazy try here [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anti-abortion_violence].
I have no bother with Christians as individuals. Im not trying to convert anyone to atheism, I just want the same respect in return. It does bother me when they lobby the government based on what some book says. Example gays getting married. Does it really affect you whether someone else can get married? Gays have the same right to be miserable as the rest of us. Or when the pope says that promoting contraception in Africa is dangerous. Hes really not helping.
You're starting to piss me off. Do not call my God shitty. Carbon-dating is inaccurate, it's a well known fact, search for it on the internet. If you're too lazy then don't respond, with a bullshit comment, as seems to be your initial instinct. And enough with the "hard-core", "casual" religious stereotype. I think everything in the bible can be taken literally, as for attacks on abortion clinics...well I think that anyone who enforces abortions, maybe should have been aborted themselves.
That may be wrong of me to say, but it seems fair enough....And I've never really liked the pope. Well feel free to pick apart that statement, I'm too tired to add the rest right now.
Ok, where to start. Westborough Baptist church: an example of fundi's, hardcore. I dont believe they represent your average or more moderate Christians. Religion means different things to different people.
You think the Doctors and nurses from those clinics had it coming? What happened to love thy neighbor and turn the other cheek?
Everything in the bible can be taken literally? No metaphor? All that crazy stuff from the old testament? Example, The bad'uns from Sodom want to rape Lot's visiting angels so Lot, (remember, hes the good guy) offers his virgin daughters to the baying mob to be raped instead! After gods attrocities against the civilian population he turns Lots wife to Salt for the most minor of indiscretions. No one else thinks he was heavy handed? Not mention to a little hypocritical sparing Lot after the dick move he tried to pull on his daughters.
If you believe we decended from two people in a garden, that the world was made in 7 days with the world and universe being less than 10,000 years old. There is no point in us continuing as you ignore all available evidence. You're right, carbon dating isnt accurate but we are not talking errors of thousands of years:
"The 2004 version of the calibration curve extends back quite accurately to 26,000 years BP. Any errors in the calibration curve do not contribute more than ±16 years to the measurement error during the historic and late prehistoric periods (0 - 6,000 yrs BP) and no more than ±163 years over the entire 26,000 years of the curve"
As far as referring to "a" god as shitty, if hes all powerful I doubt his ego would be bruised by my mortal comments. It wasn't even a particularly barbed insult. I could do much better. If your god is the petty spiteful god from my above examples then I stand by my statement.
I've worked for two Jewish companies and I've found all the Jewish people I've worked with the be hardworking, well educated, respectful, witty and kind. When you look into the faith it's essentially all about being that way.
I imagine Buddhists would vote for Buddhist, as am I.

Ok...I'm just gonna start by asking, what evidence have I overlooked? Why do I even bother with these threads?
Given enough time and patience, I could probably come up with a witty and valid response to your post....but, honestly I'm kinda sick of digging through the Holy Bible and trying to pull up evidence to support any other post that I may have made earlier, out of my own optimism towards anybody else taking it well, or not jumping down my throat for it. I know everybody has their own beleifs, but christians (including better ones than me) are severely out-numbered on the escpaist. Mybe due to the constant flow of threads regarding religion.
But please enough with the "hardcore" and "casual" christian stereotype. THERES ONLY ONE KIND OF CHRISTIAN, YOU BABY-STOMPING PISSANT. erm...allow me to collect myself, or just turn the other cheek and post again here later, if I dare show my face around here again, I'll be sure to bookmark this thread.
