There's more to anime than just Naruto and Death Note. Some shows fly under the collective radars of everyone in the anime-watching community. What's the most obscure show you've ever watched, and did you enjoy it?

I saw an anime series my step-mother bought for me called Betterman (I think it's obscure: I don't talk to my friends often about anime, so I could be talking about the most popular show evar for all I know). She and I rather enjoyed the first episode, so we went ahead and got the entire 26-episode series. To be completely brief, the show essentially combines Japanese horror with mech-suits. Yeah, that's kind of an odd combo, and it doesn't always mesh too well. In addition, there's also this being going around called Betterman who eats what looks like lotus-flowers to kill the people threatening our intrepid heroes. A lot of the story makes little sense, especially the last episode concerning the fate of an unborn child (seriously, show. WTF?). I may have my details all mucked up, since it's been a good 2 years since I watched this show.

So, if you like mechs and horror, you might want to check this series out.

I remember seeing an early work by Miazaki called
"Nausicaa valley of the wind"
All about an ecologically devastated future and a strange semi war between two factions of human armys and one giant army of enormous insects called 'Ohimo's'. It had a heavy emphasis on nature preservation as well as human greed and I gotta say I liked it. It's a must for any Miazaki fan (I'm pretty sure I've mispelled all the Japanese words here) who want to see some of his earliest work.

I've actually heard of Betterman, apparently it's in the same universe as GaoGaiGar.

As for me, I can't say I've seen anything that obscure, but I've seen the first episode of Bokatsu Tenshi Dokuro-chan, which while not really obscure, isn't one of the really recognized series either.

Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion. And no, I'm not so out-of-touch as to think that's obscure, it's just the most obscure I've seen.

The best obscure(ish) anime I've ever seen is Michiko to Hatchin. It's a bit like Cowboy Bebop, and it's really good. It's pretty different to most anime things, just look at the main characters:

...Now that I think about it, almost every anime I've seen has been pretty mainstream, this is probably the only one that wasn't.

Not sure which of these would be obscure, so I'll just list the ones I know

Martian Successor Nadesco
Those Who Hunt Elves
Some episodes of Guren Lagan
Some episodes of S-CRY-ED
An episode or two of Mai-Otome

Was gonna list Utena, but I doubt that it's that obscure.

Galaxy Express 999. Growing up, one of the local channels used to run episodes of the 1978 series. I remember thinking that it wasn't like any cartoons I'd ever seen before, that it was somehow different.

I didn't learn that it was what we now know as anime until many years later.

Ai no Kusabi and Legend of the Blue Wolves.

Am I not supposed to admit to watching yaoi?

Ozamu Tezuka´s Belladonna (1975). I didn´t understand anything (the movie didn´t have subtitles), but it was pretty to look at.

GANTZ:
Big boobs, explosions, gore, super powers and aliens sounds stupid but is actually really sad.

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni:
Town full of mentalists, plot restarts every four episodes and takes an alternative future, completely off its rocker.

Elven lied:
One of my favorites, not really obscure but isn't famous either. Its about psychic girls and sexually confused cousins. Extremely sad and powerful and also great action scenes, very gory.

Ground Defense Force Mao-chan, Tattoon Master, Ah My Buddha, I's, Ramen Fighter Miki...there's a few. Some of which are deservedly obscure.

Bah, innocent enough to have seen them. I mean, how many people here have heard of Sensitive Pornograph or Boku no Sexual Harrassment?

I remember that, I think. Was it about an intergalactic cootie-war? If so, I think I saw the first episode.

Pfft. BokuNo is one of the best known yaoi titles. I think it was the first one ever officially translated and brought over. I'll admit to only having seen bits of Sensitive Pornograph, though-- the art style is awful.

Speaking of shounen ai, there's also Sukisho, which is pretty bad and kind of obscure, and Princess Princess, which is the shoujoest shounen ai series in the world.
