If they started pricing right I wouldn't consider piracy. 60$ for medal of honor? 50$ for front mission evo? 40$ for dead rising 2? These games are not worth the price, and I've gotten ripped off way to many times. Oh and for anyone who says "you can wait for the prices to drop" take a look at CoD MW 2. Still 60$ after about 2 years, and it's only half as good as CoD 4. Price them reasonably and sure I'd buy it. The only time I wouldn't pirate ever would be for companies just starting.
$40 for Deadrising 2 and you don't think it's worth it? Sir, them be fighting words. Pistols at dawn!

If you can't afford it you don't play it. It's hardly a conundrum.
I can afford some games, but I like to see if a game's any good before I buy it. For this reason, I search out reviews and gameplay videos on the intertubes. Ha, psyche - you thought I was gonna defend demo piracy, dintcha? There is no call for it, it just seems like a hassle to me. It also really ruins shorter games (if you pirate Plants vs Zombies or Portal, playing for long enough to get a sense of it is probably around a quarter way through the whole game).

Only reason I've ever pirated something is because I already have a (broken) copy, and the company in question does not make that product any more. Oh, and because I wanted a version of a Gameboy Color game on my laptop. I doubt most pirates do that.

Directly responding to OP, I became sickened reading "The Scene" and their pretentious, elitist, moronic comments. They...ew. Really disgusting.

This is a good, concise article about piracy: http://blog.martincrownover.com/2009/04/21/swashbuckling-under-pressure/

But, honestly, piracy cannot be justified, under any circumstances. Anyone who thinks it can is deluding themselves.

Then don't play them. Or save your money. Or get a second job. Or any number of other solutions to the problem. Sorry, but "it costs too much" isn't a good excuse. Gaming isn't a right, it's a luxury.

It is perfectly fair and reasonable to say "I think you are charging too much for this item." It is not, however, perfectly fair and reasonable to say "But I deserve it and want it, so I'll just steal it and be justified." Unless the item in question is necessary for survival, which games aren't.

Perfect phrasing; I'll be using that in any subsequent threads on the issue. It's like gamer-entitlement-syndrome to the extreme.

It only covers 'piracy' in a market economy. I have drawn a little illustration to help you realize the error of limiting infinite resources for profit.

Red bar has the words "free information".

Green bar has the words "costs of producing".

If it has a cost, it isn't free!

I refuse to buy DVD's due to those moronic ads and that stupid warning message. It's insane at how companies and corporations claim piracy is hurting them when they deliberately attempt to punish their customers with this shit.

Pirated Copy:

1. You download it, you watch it directly;

2. No need to visit a store;

Legal Copy:

1. You have to watch moronic ads;

2. You have to visit a store;

So it's really mostly all about convenience. Are those 2 reasons enough to justify pirating? Yes. If companies cannot take the time to fight the actual pirates instead of bombarding legal copies with shit like that then why should I take the time to open my pocket and fork out money for their shit?

The same can be applied to games.

Legal Copy:

1. Most of the times full of DRM;

2. You have to visit a store;

3. Whilst Digital Distribution is an option, prices shouldn't be the same as in stores giving that costs are lowered;

4. They're expensive.

Number 4 might be controversial. Often, the argument against this is that gaming is not a privilege. This is true. However, if a corporation cannot take the time to care about me(aka lower prices) then why should I take the time to care about them(aka buying the product).

I'm not going to go through this article tonight. I'll most likely read it tomorrow. Either way, if anyone has read the article can you tell me if the author presented some numbers? As in, the country from which the most downloads originate?

I don't think piracy is alright, but I stopped giving a shit when the developers stopped developing the games half way through.
This.

OT: I don't think piracy is a good thing to do, but developers aren't being helpful. It seems that this entire argument has turned into a dick measuring contest, with both sides being the size of skyscrapers.

EDIT:

Why don't people just shut the fuck up about Piracy?

I'll pirate stuff if I want to. I don't give a fuck if it hurts this industry either, this industry fucking deserves it. I have yet to see a finished game released in 2010 and I have yet to be satisfied with my purchase a month down the line which has caused me to pirate other games. Pirates aren't the ones hurting this industry, the fucking idiots making the products are.
My point exactly. Way to represent pirates in the shittiest way possible. +1 fail to you.

and why do you think the products are getting worse? devs (NOT PUBLISHERS) don't have as much money to make the games thanks to people like you with your attitude problem.
I only started pirating games recently as a result of the constant stream of unfinished shit that the devs were releasing so I don't see how I'm to blame for this. There never used to be so many unifinished games released before DLC became popular. Now the games are getting released half done, then finished with paid DLC, and that is something that I am not going to cooperate with. To be honest I'm on the verge of just giving up with video games. Save for a few, they're just a complete waste of money these days. They're not even worth the effort it takes to pirate them.
I might not have played that many games in 2010, but could you give a few examples of games that were unfinished compared to games in earlier years.

Even though piracy is 'bad', you can't blame them for grabbing the opportunity to get something for free. I mean, would anyone refuse a free slice of their favorite pie? Of course not. Same goes with piracy, would anyone refuse a game they can get for free?
Of course I would refuse, because, in your analogy, the pie would have to be taken WITHOUT permission from its creator.

It's a bad analogy regardless, since pie is finite and a company can infinitely copy those lines of code.

<--- not a pirate. Except in DnD. I'm a Dread Pirate!

I`m supposed to feel sorry for multimillionaire publishers and there pet developers? lol
Nowdays i spend more time downloading than playing since they all suck so bad.
I would only consider buying only if prices drop 400%. All that considered i would probably get GW2 since i like what they are doing but to be sure a OB must be available.

If you account for inflation, games are actually pretty cheap if you compare to past prices...

OT: I only pirate games that aren't being sold anymore through any medium. When a PC game approaches the 5 year or more mark, I usually check GOG or Steam to see if they have it, but after that point, I'll consider piracy. The companies that made it wont be selling it anymore and the only place that sells games around here would be gamestop, and they almost never sell PC games, especially older ones. If it's available, though, I will always buy it legally.

Thank you for posting this article. It has really opened my mind to the problems of piracy whereas before I had just blown them off, and deemed it not a big deal.

It also has lead me to regain respect for ubisoft. When i first heard about their drm policy I was outraged and never wanted to support them. But now after finding out that they tried a drm free policy with PoP and it practically failed, I understand where they're coming from (I still probably won't buy their games, but now it's just because I don't have any interest in them, rather than a hatred of the company).

Now I didn't pirate very much before I read this article, because I'm mostly an indie gamer and I feel obligated to buy a small developers game, or else I'd hate myself. But i do pirate AAA games when i do wish to play them. I'm not sure as of yet whether or not this will change because of this, but it has improved my knowledge of the cons of piracy. And it has given me a lot to think about throughout the day.

Subscription = £ game = £ DLC =££ Peripherals = £££ Realising that the peripherals and addons will need to be bought again when they break = not very fucking funny.

Also realising the game sucks and you ust spent £60 on it = Pricey.

You see now your trying to convince pirates and the thing is pirates all have very nice and tidy excuses for why they are all miserable little entitled pricks. Either their assholes in which case you're never going to convince them or they have some flimsy excuse. No, you are not entitled to play a game because it exits or dictate what the game should be or how much it should cost. You will pay the price tag or not pay at all and you will deal with what content is there no matter how unfair it is or not buy it. This is not a democracy this is economics. Enjoy the game and pay for it or don't buy it, don't be a stealing douche and for the love of Jesus don't say "its okay because games are expensive and don't have enough stuff in them. LOLOLOLOL" because that just makes you sound like a idiot black hole.
