Why the decision to drop out, rather than change schools?

Because I couldn't at the time.

The city wouldn't let me switch due to where I lived and the only other school was an inner city drug and gang filled mess that I wanted no part of.

I figured my best choice was just to leave and go to college or get my GED.

I did the latter and am planning on going to college soon.

Yes, light fun is is okay but ridiculing a student is just wrong.

It seriously took every ounce of restraint I had to not stab that prick with my pencil so I just ran out and only came back to tell the principal, but that didn't go well.

One awesome thing that came out of it though, when my mom and I confronted him, he got up in her face and began insulting her.

She punched him out.

I'm not a drop out so I can't say much but I'm really interesting in hearing about how your life has been since you dropped out and then maybe we can make a decision on whether you made the right decision.

So you think some people can be bullied while others can´t?
No-one should be bullied!
It's easy to say that; but much harder to do anything about it. It could be that argued that some comments on this site are forms of bullying - including, no doubt, some of yours. Bullying is a part of life; you can try and hide away from it all you want, but that'll just make it so much worse when it occurs to you - it's basic human nature at the end of the day; and it happens everywhere. Sure you can argue people shouldn't be bullied; and you'd be right; but just saying that doesn't change anything; nor is it what this thread is about.

As for the OP; I can't say for sure what options you have - it really depends on luck. There have been some highy successful people who have no qualifications; but they are few and far between - the vast majority of jobs that are attainable to you will no doubt require at least a High School qualification.

What are you doing there?

I may have when I first started out here, but that was only in my case, not as a broad question for everyone who had gone the same route.

And yes, I know it's possible to get bullied in college/work (mainly because it happened at my second job) but there's a far less likelihood that it will happen and I do wish to go to college, so I'll just go for it.

I had a rough time in school too, it was Middle School for me, and I couldn't drop out in middle school.

Overall, I don't really know. We've all been told that it's much harder to get a job if you drop out of high school or didn't finish college, but then again. My mom dropped out of college after a year, and now she's a fully trained and certified paramedic working for the town. So...

So it will be fun!

I'd imagine so, but all the teachers seemed to be assholes including the heads of the school, so they didn't do a thing about it.

They'll get what's coming to them eventually.

How's my life since the decision to leave school? Great actually.

Not having to deal with assholes, not having any mental or physical scars or bruises everyday and having actual freedom to do what I want and study what I want is probably the best thing that's happened to me.

I've dropped out of college twice. First time because the school was just terrible, although it was private, it had the worst teachers I've come across, and although they claimed to treat you as more of an adult, it was the complete opposite. Plus, I went there expecting to really excel my music knowledge, but it seemed that all they spent money on was sport equipment, which was weird because as a school, they're terrible at sports.

There was nothing wrong with the second college, teachers were good, equipment was top notch, and I had loads of friends there already, but after 9 months of full time work, I really missed the money and fun I had in employment.

Did I make the right choice? I think so, at the end of the day, what I was learning at college was useless unless I went into that line of work. The skills and experience I've gained from work has benefited everything I do already and will only continue to do so.

"Why on Earth would you have skipped highschool?! Think of all the things you've missed! And the Prom..."
I don't understand why people like the idea of highschool. I got enough teenage nonsense from middle school, and honestly, I think I would've suffered from the same issues that Julian faced. It would have damaged me. From that point of view, I can understand why someone would drop out of it.
Still, Julian, you should go back for an education. Get one of those highschool equivalency degrees and go to a decent college. If you're abhorrent of school only for the social environment, then you'll do fine in undergraduate. At least at my school, you're a person gaining a skillset from other people, not the child under the eye of the supervisor. Other students echo this sentiment, and treat each other with respect. You can salvage your educational situation- just be disciplined about it. And don't forget to shop around for colleges- if you can travel to visit, definitely go. Find where you'd be happiest. Even see if you could study abroad; often, the tuition would be cheaper overseas, and when else are you going to get to go live in another country for months on such cheap board? ;)

Go back to school. Now.
This kind of dogmatism is just silly. Plenty of people are home schooled, most (if not all) public universities in the U.S. accept high school equivalence diplomas. I really wish my guidance counselor, or anyone else at my school, had suggested the possibly of dropping out and starting university. Instead they push AP classes on everyone and scare them into thinking that if they aren't in the top 10 of their class they'll go nowhere.

After you show an employer a two year or four year degree, they aren't going to ask about your high school GPA.

Then clearly you've made the correct decision Julian. I admire you for taking a risky move and sticking to your guns. However I wouldn't condone dropping out as not everyone will share the same successes as you. :)

I wanted to make sure I at least finished high school. I dropped out of college after my first year due to alot of things. I went back last Spring and did a full time schedule, and got one of the highest overall grades and GPA out of all the students that semester... and I dropped out again right after.

I don't regret it. It's just not for me, and I can't afford it anyway.

I wanted to drop out of college because my father was very ill and was in hospital at the time so I wanted to leave to look after him, he wouldnt let me but I just stopped going anyway. That was about 3 years ago, however my father died last year so I am thinking of going back into some higher education... I just dont quite know the rules in britain for this kind of thing.

I dropped out last year, but I still did the exams, and did very well at them. I'll be off to college soon. I think it was probably one of the best decisions I've ever made. If I had stayed in school, I would have failed my exams, no question.

I just don't take schooling well. I got bullied a lot, by teachers and students alike, and I hated school intensely. Like I said, leaving was the best thing I could have done, and I don't regret it for a second.

Incidentally, my brother isn't doing secondary school (high school) either. He was going to go in, but we figured he'd do much better on his own, and he's going to be homeschooled. He has Aspergers syndrome anyway, and never got on well in school.
