I have always wanted to play the harmonica because my grandma played it when she was younger and I thought it would be neat.

I had wanted to learn piano, but the piano teacher was unimpressed by my fingers. She said they were 'too small', and a bit stubby. "Unless your fingers are suddenly going to grow long and thin - I don't think you'll be able to play as well as you'd like."

I also wanted to learn to the play the drums, but my Mother said that wasn't an instrument for girls, and she wouldn't allow it.

Sheesh. I just never bothered after that.
If you wanna play the piano, find a teacher that will teach you regardless of finger length. My wife has short, stubby fingers and she is an excellent piano player. She's been playing for almost 15 years now. Long fingers aren't a requirement. It just makes it easier to play because you can reach more keys without moving your hands.
My want to play an instrument has passed.

Bach is wonderful, and my favourite composer, especially for cello =)
It's never too late to learn; we'll welcome you as a fellow cello anytime =)

As for those damn squeaky violins, however... =P (sorry, sorry, bass clef prejudice, despite the fact that the cello has incredible range...wait, don't get me started;-)
That's very comforting to know. I had this notion in my mind that my chance for it might go with my youth. While I detest the baroque era as a historical period the music just seems to get along with me, and I really hope to play it myself when I can afford to.

Well since I would be going with the easiest, drums. But if I had the natural talent I would probably go with spanish guitar (I know its not actually a different instrument but a different style) or violin.
I take offense at that, Drums are by no means the " easiest" instrument.... In truth no instrument is easy ( save maybe the recorder, not sure if that counts) But to the untrained eye the drummer may be just banging on stuff, but keeping the beat is not as easy as it sounds, you have the audience to contend with for starters who if they know the song will almost ALWAYS try to speed up the tempo or get off beat or something..... YOU have to keep it steady, because the rest of the group is depending on you, you have to know your que's, you may or may not need to be able to read not only percussion music what with flams and para-diddles buzzes crash vs crescendo etc... but If you were like me you would also be required to learn the xylophone ( which is basically piano music)..... so yeah we may be back there banging on stuff, we may even make it look easy but there is a lot of time and effort that goes into the craft.

Best of luck =) It's true the cello isn't the cheapest instrument to learn (based on the price of a good learning cello, and the relative scarcity of cello teachers compared to guitar or piano), but it's so much fun and so beautiful to play. I hope you get the chance soon; you'll be immersed in the Prelude to Bach's first Suite for cello before you know it =)

Wow. No, anyone can play songs on the piano. There are a large variety of songs that can be played for all hand sizes.

Also, the probable reason your mom didn't want you to play drums was that it would be too loud. If she had said that, you might have been dead set on learning it, but that's just my guess.

I've been told pretty much the same thing growing up. That the piano teacher was just being severely unkind. Perhaps she just didn't like me, but that was a long time ago and I've since learned that I could have continued trying to learn piano, but with a different instructor.

I had assumed that about my Mother also, but from how I was raised - I am more inclined to believe it was her incredibly controlling nature. Also, she said she would have been fine with the clarinet or the violin instead of the drums, which lead me to believe that it wasn't just the sound. Since both those instruments can be eardrum shatteringly unpleasant, at first.

Woooo! Hermonica! Ok, well, i wanted to when I was a kid. I'm from Texas, so I like the whole country thing. Now though, maybe violin. I'm a sherlock holmes fan, and a violin is just a teensy little bit more portable than a piano or drum set.

I'm going to take a wild guess, but has your mom ever played a musical instrument? If she has, she might have forgot how even the most "classical" of instruments can produce shatteringly unpleasant sounds. She might have just focused on the social or fancy-schmancy aspect of the instruments.

If Mozart of Beethoven played the drums, I'd bet she would have been more inclined to allow you to learn it.

I'm musically inclined, but if I wasn't, I'd probably want to take up kazoo.

Hell, I think I'll take that up anyway.

She has never, herself, played an instrument. However, my older brother taught himself to play the guitar and became quite good at playing the trumpet. My eldest sister also played the Clarinet. She didn't seem bothered when either of them started playing their instruments. As for if Mozart or Beethoven had played the drums, perhaps. Though likely not.

Honestly, there's so much I want to be able to play, I really can't pick one. Notable ones are:
- Piano, definitely got the fingers for that one.
- Violin
- Trumpet
- Saxophone, go go Epic Sax Guy immitation!
- A ton of different guitar styles; Spanish, rock/metal, 'regular' acoustic, jazz style, blues.
- Bass guitar, double bass looks cool too.
- Drums

I love music, and I'd love to be able to play it myself. I was quite good at bass guitar in music class, but for some reason I never continued with it. Maybe some day, I don't know.

Still hate myself for missing that event *sigh*

Well, most people have started high school before they're trying that sort of thing.

OT: I would like to be able to play the ukulele.
