I don't pirate anything...And for my generation that is saying something. I just feel it is wrong to take something that isn't mine, plus I'm kinda paranoid about viruses.

WHy do I pirate, well I actually own half of the stuff I have pirated, but my family has so many cd's that it very well could take me over an hour to find it, so I download it. I don't download games however, and I stream movies. For movies, there are certain ones where I think that such a piece of crap is not worth my money, if I really want to see something, I see it in theatres and get it on dvd or blue ray. I honestly have maybe 200 songs downloaded, so if people come after me for that, I'll get a slap on the wrist anyway. I only download stuff I enjoy, otherwise I just listen to the radio.

On a side note, how is pirating different from using a DVR or some other type of recorder to tape a movie that is on tv?

Like some guy wayyyyy back said, you aren't yoinking any real property (like money and electricity, which are finite). And saying "wasn't going to buy anyway" is legit: how can you buy if you don't have the money (having a high end PC doesn't count - it's a solid investment. Same goes for X360)? Also, new games come here several months to eternity late. The only buyable things are classics that are sold more reasonable prices. But then you get laughed at by relatives and other gamers.

And as far as your point of buying CDs through normal commercial outlets being a crime against music; it's called capitalism. You don't like it, move to a communist nation.
XD capitalism and communism are the only economic systems you guys.

American economics =/= Capitalism. At all.
Once again, you're missing the point. If I had wanted to do a complete breakdown of all possible economic systems, I'd have started another thread. If you want to discuss the topic at hand, great. If you want to argue semantics, I'm done.
You're missing the point of what I even said to begin with. Don't be done because you're wrong.

I gladly buy albums if I am handing the money to the band instead of to a record label, who will give the band less than 10% of the money. Bands make their money touring, not selling CDs.

The right analogy would be if you got a copy of the directions for building my couch off of P2P and built your own couch in your own home with your own tools and lumber, and then crashed on that couch.
you miss the whole argument by a MILE right there.

your not JUST being charged for the cost of the CD and the time to make the copy, your being charged to copy it at ALL. the 'work' your being charged for is the time and effort to make the ORIGINAL you get your copy from.

if you dont want to pay for your copy dont, but dont flat out steal it and clame that its at ALL ethical. millions if not BILLIONS of people the world over are paid every day for their ideas alone. the whole concept alone of a game is worth cash, thats not including actualy coding the game or even the minimal costs to copy it too a CD.

your not just paying for a CD when you buy a game your paying for the idea/concept, the time to impliment that idea/concept in gaming code, as WELL as the costs to copy and ship it, you know this, so why try and play stupid and act like you dont?

ohh and talk about stupid examples. YOUR example doesnt work either, a more accurate example for YOUR theory would be if you got a copy of my couch off the net and as soon as you looked at it a new couch just appeared in your living room fully built and ready too nap on. pirates dont BUILD games from some copy they get off the net, the copy IS the game.

pirates do nothing but steal it and play it.

I recently got my first job, and with that I was finally earning money. Like the big, pretentious Objectivist I am, the knowledge that I could trade my labour for the labour of others was nothing short of cathartic. Whenever I had money as a kid, I would spend it and feel good for it.

I can't think of pirating. While most game companies have this whole 'game-for-cash' thing going on, I don't intend to start stealing any time soon.

All this talk about pirating has led me to ask, "Is life so bad that people really need to pirate?"
I don't pirate, and if there's a game, or some music, or something of the sort that I want but don't have, I deal. I just don't quite see how its easier to live with knowing that you've stolen a game than to just go without.
Now, to my fellow non-pirates, is your life really that miserable because you have to go without, or paid for what you have?
(And if this has been done, please tell me. I searched, but my inner thesauraus isn't functioning so well right now.)
No. Remember my infamous thread that lots of people seem to hate me for [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/jump/18.86308.1275042]? That pretty much says it all.

What about used games? To the publisher / developer someone buying a used game is the same as someone pirating it, isn't it? Yet we don't regard buying used games as unethical in any way, do we?

Maybe some people just don't have the cash to buy all their games, music etc.
Then again, pirating requires a moderately good PC in the first place.
Hmm...
I don't, either. And I just go without. Why don't people just accept that?
I mean, if you didn't have the money for a fancy dinner, you'd just live without, wouldn't you?
And who cares about the ability to just "Copy" something? I mean, its not yours. You didn't pay for it. No one gave your the lisence to play it.
Too bad.
By that logic we should ban 'pub bands' from covering other musicians albumns as they often have not purchased the rights to play the song. No one gives them a license to play those songs.

I can see why people are so against (or for) piracy, but really there is no straight up right doctrine, both pirates and devs are as bad as each other and both have to learn to play nice. If you choose to buy all your music/games/software/movies/whatever, good for you. That doesn't give you the right to spit flames at people on the other side of the fence (as in those that are against EULAs, DRM or whatever). Same applies if you jumple the order of that sentance.

I buy all my games and movies, not a single pirated piece in my collection..

The only exception is music *Feels ashamed*, but they dont sell any cd's with the songs that i want.. Yes i know i can buy the songs seperatly on the internet, but still i have not done that..
The only cd's i buy, is from what i rank as my top 5 artists, cause they have many good songs, not beeing 1 hit wonders..
