One day, cows invaded the school ... yeah that was my schooling right there in a nutshell!

Wow. Thats..... horrible. A lot of traumatised kids right there I am guessing. The most "dangerous" thing that happened in my school was the time a riot broke out between the year 10's and 11's, and a girl drowned on a school trip, but noone set themselves on fire.

I live in the posh heart of jolly old England where one of our 15 year olds was kicked out of school for downing a pint of vodka, the 6 year old boys have ponytails and earings, we used the have chair fights (Big metal chairs, throw at each other), light gas taps, brew alcohol in chemistry lessons, smash people through windows, bomb threats once a month, usual stuff.
That is awesome! I have built a still before, but not for ethanol, I wanted to purify methanol for some other reasons...

A famous Swedish blogger went to our school, talked a lot of shit on her blog, then left.

Yeah, my school is totally badass.

In the middle of a science class a few years ago, one of the popular girls shaved her head when the teacher stepped out to get some equipment.

She just pulled a shaver like you get in a barbers, out from her bag, plugged it in and just did it in front of the class before throwing her hair (She had hair almost down to her arse) onto a bunsen burner.

some of the girls asked why she did it and she just replied:

"My head was getting hot".

This one time when I was living with my grandparents this lady was having a fight with her boy friend in front of her house and after about 2 hours of screaming she went into her house grabbed a thing of gasoline and set herself on fire on the sidewalk screaming, "This is what you did to me!" until she was just a lump of melted person on the sidewalk...<.<
Oh...wow, that must have been terrifying! I am sorry you had to witness something like that, e-hugs! *hugs*

As for mine, I once came to school with no shoes!
....my school has been boring so far.

Well, there was an incident where a student was arrested for making death threats, I was involved because he joked "I'll kill you, you ate my candy!" (jokingly, I though nothing of it) The other 4 threats were not jokes, I was not part of those though. I still get court papers, and when they arrested him he had a knife in his bag, and the means to carry out the other threats (his grandfather had the guns he threatened to use). The other people who were threatened were also cousins, one is a one of my best friends, I know the others pretty well.

-There was a fire...no word of a lie... in the sprinkler room. We got to go home early.
-There was a fire with one of the vent control servos, we had to stay outside (-20C) for about an hour when the air was deemed safe.
-A pipe burst, flooding a good portion of the lower floor. This was over march break.
-Several lock downs, only one was not a drill, there were reports that a fugitive was in the area.
-Some minor drug busts

I also caused some terror by making a police letter head, and writing a letter detailing a surprise drug dog sweep in the next week. I left it on the floor in a stair well. By noon all of the druggies were at their lockers frantically packing and deodorizing. It was classic. I did this twice.

Jesus chri...
The absolute worst, most horrible thing that has occurred at my school? Kid was found with some Acid (that is, Lysergic acid diethylamide, not acid like the kind of thing you'd expect to see at a school). This was a surprise to everyone, because usually the gents in the toilets stick to cigarettes.
A grenade and likely suicide attempt in one day? Goddamn.

Not too long ago, two brats in a grade school in Oslo got busted with pistols in their backpacks. One of them said it was "to scare the bully" and he only got it because his parents didn't secure the firearm locker properly.

You're school is a terrible place. We had fights (I actually walked over one in my freshman year, two girls fighting on the floor, I didn't notice until I was already past 'em), but no shootings on campus, no burnings, or stabbings. LOTS of mercury spills though. Lots, and LOTS. Especially my senior year. Was kind of hilarious.
Mercury? Cool! But just to point out, the stuff is essentially harmless (toxicity wise) unless you ingest it or bathe in it. Any and all fuss that was generated because of it was sadly wasted :(
Try explaining that to panicky parents. Mostly it just meant everyone stood outside for awhile before going back in.

Hmmm.... personally I wasn't really involved in much. A guy in my year managed to get suspended and eventually expelled for smoke-bombing the toilets (harsh, much?), and as a class we managed to push a rubbish teacher into a mental breakdown (the example event for my never-to-be-forgotten lesson that kids are cruel and evil)...

But my brother's class, bloody hell. One of the typical reports back from a day in his science lab would be... someone decided to turn on and light a gas tape ... and it ignited all the books in front of it, and someone's jacket. o_O
They didn't get on with their chem teacher, that was maybe a crucial thing. We had more of a genial thing going with the science guys and instead hated on the humanities wonks (the one who had the breakdown was doing French, I think)... all except the actually-German german teacher, who was both the most stereotypically bavarian person you'll ever meet, but also quite cool.

I think I'm leading something of a charmed life in that regard. Nothing much bad happened at uni, even though the levels of wasteage we achieved should have led to it (various accidents and even deaths not long after we all left, but nothing at the time), and even now, working in a college, our students are incredibly docile. Even the recent protests have been quite low key and amicable.

Sure, here's my basic heavy metal poisoning warning (incidentally, I'm a chemist): mercury is able to pass through the blood-brain barrier and wreck all sorts of havoc in your brain, particularly in children. That being said, the risk of poisoning by physical contact alone is essentially nil, given that the skin cannot absorb metals as efficiently as the digestive system. Of course, if you kid is stupid enough to see a puddle of silvery metal and decides to swallow a handful...well, that's probably for the best, from an evolution standpoint.

Too tired to think of how I was going to respond, so I'll just say 'agreed'.

The secondary school I went to seems pretty tame compared to some of the stuff I'm hearing here..

Once someone spilled a bottle of something that gives off hydrogen chloride when in contact with air. Anyone who knows basic chemistry should know that hydrogen chloride is a highly hydrophilic gas that when dissolved in water forms hydrochloric acid. So pretty much what ended up happening was hydrogen chloride gas made its way through several science labs before any alarm was activated. When inhaled it dissolves into the moisture in your airway/lungs causing some quite uncomfortable irritation.

Second thing I can remember was one guy getting bashed over the head with a skateboard and getting his head bashed against a reinforced window. He had mouthed off about some guy who had dropped out and got jumped by the dropout and his girlfriend at school. Last I heard the dropout had two kids by the time he was 18.

I live in a pretty middle class area.
