Ya know, with all of the talk about piracy, I bet people don't even understand what it is. Automatically, we assume it's a bad thing for no reason other than we don't understand what it does. At least, that's my belief.
Recently, I have two great examples of what copyright infringement does:

Great video combining two songs that would never have been made without the tools to mix songs.

Great fan game shut down by Square for copyright infringement.

In a way, it's a way to stop competition to products. In another, it's all kinds of messed up.

With this thread, I'll use it to show either songs or possibly fan made things that should be legal but aren't due to copyright infringement.

-E- Stolen from EcksTeaSea for viewing for all:

Piracy and copyright infringement are different, because piracy could be either illegal distribution or theft, whereas infringement is not properly asking permission to use content. (The makers, or whoever own the rights of the makers, are entirely within their right to ask money for said permission.) While personally I may not agree with the extreme [ineffective] extent that Youtube defends infringement, I do not commemorate the decrying of their actions as 'messed up'. Misdirected I would say is a better description.

Oh... I was thinking about the report released yesterday that over 1100 people had been abducted by pirates in 2010. I was about to make a comment about having this secret desire to become a privateer off the coast of Somalia to eradicate pirates.

Like how some destitute and confined-to-drug-addiction Prostitutes only do their work to support their habit, many Somali pirates only act their crimes in order to support their families due to the ineffective and/or corrupt Somalian Government.

Copyright infringement is not piracy, it's copyright infringement. The creators have every right to protect their IP and I see no reason why they shouldn't. Yeah sometimes they could loosen their grip a little, but they are still within their rights.

Stop pissing in my stew, it's a good dream. They also didn't have to go around murdering the people they did. They may be in a desperate situation, but they are doing the wrong things about it. We can make a huge argument on what is right and wrong, moral and immoral, until the cows come home, but I doubt we'd break new ground.

Or we could point the finger at the right parties: The Pirates who steal out of greed, and the groups responsible for the destitution of the pirates who steal out of necessity.

Or, we could point the finger at the right parties: The Somali warlords who are destroying the lives of the people and driving them to cause injustice to innocent parties. But that would be a much harder problem to fix, and more importantly, keep fixed.

I understand why the Somali pirates are doing what they do, but that doesn't mean I can condone their actions.

Ignore him. Your dream isn't as far-fetched as some would believe.

The market is super small right now, but private navies (or at least corporate owned) are a very real idea. No guarantee that anything will materialize, but it is there and investors are considering it.

Mercenaries are not the solution to poor countries.

The problem in of itself isn't the issue, it's the lack of interest in the problem. To be fair, though, there's any number of places that have equal or better reasons to intervene in.

Good thing it's not intended to be a solution to poor countries, only pirates. And even then, it's less a solution and more a intermediary or means to an end. .223 Steel Core is the solution, the mercs just help it along its way.

Um. No. Most pacifists don't love peace, and I have a problem with that. They think they do, but they really don't understand it at all. It takes a soldier to really understand the love of peace. Someone who loves peace so much they are willing to fight, kill and die to achieve it.

I come from a military family, so I have some pretty strong views about that.

Well considering this is attacking mashups and CI, you have to understand that A: these were not created for profit, and B: sometimes the "victims" of such CI approve of their use.

Much like how both parties approve of the following remix ...

Yeah forgive the video portion, couldnt find a better example on youtube with a better video.

And let us not neglect Youtube either. Seeings how technically its constantly and inadvertently guilty of countless acts of CI, and you notice its kind of rare that some of these things actually get pulled?

And beyond that... Yet another confusion putting blame on piracy that was not due. Seriously this piracy theme has been run so far into the ground on the forum, If I didnt know better, I would say It feels like people lashing out at piracy out of guilty conscious. Or perhaps the scene from the tiger woods episode of southpark where the male members keep saying how unfathomable it is for a wealthy man to cheat on his wife and how they cant understand it. Then look for approval with a smile from the women in the room.

Its getting a little old to have this topic come up on a daily basis.

I feel responsible for this, in part. On average, we seem to get a topic every couple of weeks. Then I saw a thread yesterday that prompted me to make my own, it went on for 9 pages, a lot of people got upset, and now we have, what, 4 active topics on the subject? I can't claim complete responsibility, but I do feel like I contributed to the mess.

Personally I just hate it when illegal downloaders act like they aren't doing anything wrong.

Ok I am just soooooooo sick of this. This IS what news is now. Find large, yet undeadly problem, Hype it up and MENTION IT EVERY OTHER THREAD/SECOND, and use it to either distract us from the large, deadly problem or distract us from our boring lives. I am so sick of hearing about piracy, iraq/middleastern wars, politics, and deadly problems that we will face if we don't straighten up and BEHAVE.

I apologize but...can we talk about something new?
