Just for clarification if you really don't mind.

A. Was this law the cause of the recent boycotting on TAF 2010?

B. Will long-runners be affected by and what are those series?
A. Yes. This bill caused the recent boycott.

B. The bill will go into effect after July 1st. Anything currently running or released before then will be unaffected but newly released series/games will be under scrutiny.

You do realize that this will essentially cripple the japanese anime, manga, and games industries, right?
Industries that are built upon the fictional depiction of the exploitation of children will collapse? Yea, I can live with that.

If only because it would force them to do something besides produce wank material. I don't mind that some portion of a given industry endeavors to fulfill this need but if such a substantial portion is working on this sort of thing then it desperately needs a clearing out. I'm quite sure there are concepts that can be explored in manga and anime that do not involve sex, sexual acts, children committing sexual acts, children having sexual acts forced upon them, violence, ultra violence, and the same being committed both by and against children.

This is not because I think there is something inherently wrong with such things. I'm not terribly inclined to accept the arguments that even tangential harm is being done as a result. Rather, this is simply because if an industry is utterly saturated with one kind of thing I have no sympathy when it collapses for any reason.

I can't say you aren't right here, because you are. That being said, the second people stop fighting against these kinds of things is the second the pendulum starts to unstoppably swing in a direction I don't happen to like. Sure, I'm morally against child porn. What sane person isn't? But this isn't child porn, is it?

It's the IDEA of child porn.

This is a difference that MUST have clarification. If it's okay to censor one kind of idea, then that sets the stage for MORE censoring in areas that once remained unimpeachable, using the same philosophy to do so. I have no right to say what you can and cannot look at, because I do not have the desire to let you have that same control over me, and the things I like to look at. It's a dangerous, slippery slope that I feel too few people take the time to see.

"They came for the Christians and I said nothing... because I was not a Christian."
I'd like to quote this for emphasis. Censoring ideas is bad. Anything of a fictional nature is in essence an idea.

The industry is gonna be crippled because the bill is worded so vaguely that anything the government finds offensive can be pulled. It's not because there's going to be a severe lack of loli. :/

Why am I getting a weird deja vu vibe here? This reminds me somewhat of the whole spiel going on with California and its attempts to regulate video games.

I don't know where I stand on this. On one had I'm one of those people who feels that whatever your fetish is, so long as it isn't hurting others, I don't care. But lolicon pushes the boundary towards pedophilia. So I don't know. The fact that its vague on what's "bad" isn't that good though. That gives officials room to start banning things that I have no qualms about. Then you start to get into cultural repression and things just go down here. Plus isn't it the fact that penises weren't allowed to be shown in certain forms of Japanese media that now we have the whole tentacle-rape fetish. Same with the obsession with panties. Can't show the female genitalia, so we'll show the next closest thing (literally). This might just cause similar effects.

Like this bill will stop anything. This is banning a pretty big part of modern japanese-anime culture, anywho.

I'm really indifferent on this subject. I barely know anything about loli besides the fact that they all look like cartoon dolls with huge eyes.

There's nothing wrong with loli.

Just because you don't like it, doesn't mean it should be banned.

People have the right to get off on whatever they please, as long as it causes no harm.

And don't give me the "it does cause harm, it facilitates paedophilia" bullshit.

Violent video games, movies, and literature don't cause violent crime, therefore loli does not cause paedophilia.

Nothing actually "causes" Pedophilia. Pedophiles are actually born as such.

But your point is valid either way.

I'm suddenly reminded of Iran's ban of sex in general...

Here's the thing people should be wary of. Every time something is "bad for kids" it's ultimately a form of censorship. EVERY TIME I hear that in the US, I'm reminded of how Mortal Kombat "caused violence among the youth" (^$#^ you too Lieberman!)

Ultimately, if the language were explicit and described EXACTLY what was banned, it really wouldn't be effective. Reason being? Loopholes. The more vague and threatening it is, the more it's going to be a pain in the ass for people that want to look at that stuff. Ultimately, you can't baby these people forever. If they look at the damn stuff, so long as they don't try to go out and do it, let them stay otaku.

Just... yeah, don't try this at or near home you sickos!

Can I just say, that Japan has some really, really, really disturbing fetishes on their shelves. RapeLay [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RapeLay] is one just example.

I am all for the freedom of expression/speech...but you can go too far. Japan has a history of flirting with the border of sanity with this kind of shit and I am glad that this bill passed.

If you are reading this Japan, I am happy that you have matured a lot in my eyes.
You truly possess a desultory intellect if you believe that restricting free speech because you find something offensive is a step on the path toward maturity.

Restriction of free speech? Try, regulation of a saturated market full of delinquents.
