Hm.. I never liked Tomb Raider, I think it's heavily exaggerated to compare it to Tarantino unless it really changed a lot. I guess I'm more interested now.
The original games were Tomb Raider games in name only too. This reminds me of a Jim Sterling video about how we put so much weight on names and get pissed at games we'd otherwise like "if only it wasn't series X with a different tone."
How were the originals Tomb Raider in name only? They were the originals and, by and large, about raiding tombs. It doesn't get much more tomb raidery than that!
And don't assume I'm angry, I'm not, just disappointed really. The original games had a unique style of gameplay to them that I've never seen another game do nearly as well. It's just a shame to see this newest game completely abandoning those old tenants in favour of a more action-oriented cinematic approach, especially when the originals were the only games to ever have really gotten it right. Maybe the new approach will be great, I don't know, but it will never be the way it was before which again is a shame because it's not like I can look elsewhere.
With the original games for all the marketing crap it wasn't about Lara Croft, it was about these massive and wondrous locations you visited filled with mystery and complex, clever environmental puzzles. This new game by contrast is all about watching a young girl getting hurt and killing people, if previews are to be believed.
Not my thing.

To be fair, there are tombs and exploration in the game. Most of it is optional too, so if you come across an interesting looking location, if you choose to explore deeper you could come across something really awesome. Since all they're showcasing is the action-y bits (which is probably to entice a wider audience) I can see why that would put you off.
Only a few weeks away, now.
So people keep saying, though none of that has shown up so far.
