MY friends could never understand why or even how I could like rap and metal. So I put together a list of the top 10 rap songs for them to listen to, to see if they like it.

http://musicouch.com/musicouching/top-songs-top-10-rap-songs/

So I was wondering what you guys think of the list and what changes you'd make.

I would burn the records, shoot the rappers, and ban the trash. But Other than that, not enough Biggie Smalls.

I dont know how you could even do this, becuase rap ISN'T really music. Its white boys wanting to be tough abd black boys wanting to either live the gang life tthat their ancestors did or just basically announce they are a gang member and then cry later whenenver someone takes a shot at them whihc then turns to a new album.

and no, thats not racism, thats reality. I dont consider anything music when you cant play half the song on a radio without censorship taking the other half.

that being siad...
reallly nothing since I know nothing about rap except that its R&B pretending to be another genre so it can sell twice as much. But i guess I would say throw in an Akon, becuase thats what my college roommate said when i showed him the list.

((if you cant see the edit there, then there is just no help for you.

Only one song is needed for Rap to be taken seriously:

Ghetto Gospel - Tupac.

I dare any creature with a soul to not find that somewhat emotional.

Wow not a single Wu-tang Clan track? No OutKast? I mean i understand the lack of the omission of the criminally underrated Busta Rhymes but how could you not have two of the greatest groups in hip hop?

I'm glad to see 'Changes', 'Fuck da Police', and 'Juicy', but the rest is hit and miss.
Maybe 'Gin and Juice' by Snoop Dogg.

Also, should widen it a bit and include some older stuff like KRS-One and some underground stuff like Aesop Rock.

Did you perhaps mean to write, "rap isn't really music"?
yeah. My hand got messed up last night and i've been missing keys all day. I had to reread and retype this post just to be sure i didnt mean anything three times.

Yeah! Where's the "Go ninja go ninja go"?
That's Vanilla Ice...

Huh. I always thought they were the same person. What I mean is that I always knew there was this rapper who called himself something with ice. So when I heard the name "Vanilla Ice" I though Ah, so that's his name and when I heard the name "Ice-T" I though the same thing.

This thread is just gonna turn into another "rap isn't music" thread. The majority of people on here associate rap with people like Kanye West and Lil' Wayne, and base their opinion on rap from people like that, so discussion value never goes beyond the uneducated statements of "all rap is crap" and "white rappers wanna be black derp". I can understand if you don't like rap and don't wish to know anything about it, but don't get your opinions off Google.

I've said it before in a different thread, if you're knowledge of rap doesn't go beyond Kanye West, shut the fuck up.

OT: I disagree with the list, there are better artists than the ones you posted, and I feel more worthy candidates of going into a top 10 list.

First off, with anything as subjective as music, the idea of creating a list of the top ten of any genre is ridiculous, but, sticking with it anyways, let me start by saying...

Question. Where the McShit is Mc Solaar? How can you have a list of great rap songs without putting the best French rapper in the entire world on it. Actually, I don't see any of my favorites. You haven't got Mc Solaar... there's no Kid Cuddi or even The Game. I declare this list compiled primarily from top hits charts, but it doesn't really have any soul.

I totally agree. If anyone made a statement such as this.

ALL METAL IS ANGRY WHITE BOYS SCREAMING INTO A MICROPHONE. NO TALENT AT ALL INVOLVED!

It would start a flaming of epic proportions, but someone can say the exact same thing about rap (albiet replacing "white boys screaming" with "black guys taking about bitches") and and it's just taken as fact. And I agree with you, if your knowledge of rap doesn't extend beyond what you've heard other people on the internet bitching about, you don't have the right to *****.

FYI: I don't hold the opinion that metal is stupid no-talent shredding, obviously.

Is that the horrendously massacred one that Eminem did a remix of?

For me, Tupacs greatest was Hit 'Em Up, now that's a touchy one for the B.I.G. fans!

Well, I'm not a mainstream rap fan (I enjoy a lot of the other stuff out there--alternative rap like Jurassic 5 and Blackalicious), so I suppose that I'm not really qualified to tell you how to formulate a list of mainstream rap. If you really want to win over fans of other musical genres, though, I'd bust out some of the work that MCs have done with some of the talented DJs out there: Cut Chemist is a phenomenal turntablist whose work stands very well on its own, so perhaps you could spread around some of the stuff that he's worked on. Also, it's worth noting that not all rap is about heavy beats, abrasive attitudes, or any of the other hip-hop stereotypes (hell, there's an awesome song about walking down the street on the way home after a long day). I've come up with a few examples of rap that's been made by talented rappers as well as talented producers, included below.

Winters Going by DJ Signify feat. Buck65

What's the Altitude? by Cut Chemist feat. Hymnal

Halfway Home by Blackalicious
Note: This is a live version of the song performed by DJ Shadow.

No Regrets by Aesop Rock
Produced by Blockhead

Release Pts. 1, 2 & 3 by Blackalicious feat. Zach de la Rocha, Saul Williams, and Lyrics Born

Medieval by Danger Mouse and Jemini feat. The Pharcyde

Freedom by Jurassic 5
Produced by DJ Nu-Mark

Alright... that was probably a lot more than anyone is going to actually bother to listen to. Oh well, it's there, take it or leave it.

Well, that may be a bit of an extreme view, but I can see where you're coming from. However, there's a LOT of clean rap out there (meaning music devoid of profanity, overt sexuality, drug references, violence, etc.). Blackalicious, the duo that made some of the music I've provided above, deals mostly in this type of rap, motivated more by an actual message than explicit accounts of sex, drugs, and violence (like the songs you're referencing).

Sorry that this is a bit of a monster post, I just get bothered by people bashing rap/hip-hop without fully understanding the full magnitude of what they're debunking. All of the stuff that I've presented here is rap, but there's some phenomenal instrumental hip-hop out there by people like DJ Shadow. These are VERY talented people, and the music (and rap) can be VERY intelligent. I suppose that that's an argument based saved for another time, though, because this post is already obscenely long.
