Ugh... there is never a perfect top 10 list, is there? Of course, it's pretty much impossible to choose only 10 songs. That's like if I said "Alright, top 10 metal songs ever. Any subgenre. Any time period." You'd get choices completely jumbled.

I totally agree. If anyone made a statement such as this.

ALL METAL IS ANGRY WHITE BOYS SCREAMING INTO A MICROPHONE. NO TALENT AT ALL INVOLVED!

It would start a flaming of epic proportions, but someone can say the exact same thing about rap (albiet replacing "white boys screaming" with "black guys taking about bitches") and and it's just taken as fact. And I agree with you, if your knowledge of rap doesn't extend beyond what you've heard other people on the internet bitching about, you don't have the right to *****.

FYI: I don't hold the opinion that metal is stupid no-talent shredding, obviously.
Yeah, I've noticed that people who dislike rap always want their distaste for it to be voiced. I honestly couldn't give a fuck if someone dislikes it, I'd much rather discuss rap with people who do than read endless amounts of ignorance until the thread ends up raped on page 3. I don't like metal, but I don't go into every metal to say that and slam down dick statements like the one you posted.

MY friends could never understand why or even how I could like rap and metal. So I put together a list of the top 10 rap songs for them to listen to, to see if they like it.

http://musicouch.com/musicouching/top-songs-top-10-rap-songs/

So I was wondering what you guys think of the list and what changes you'd make.
Hmm, that's a hell of a bias towards the Aftermath stable.... I'll throw you my 10 though...

If I was in a different mood:
99 problems gets replaced by Breathe Easy/Lyrical Exercise [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8tqOIYAuvaw]
Concrete Schoolyard gets replaced by Can I Kick It? [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZrlJX7DzLhI]
What's the Difference by Forgot About Dre [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FY9HfOfG6h0&feature=related]
The Day I Died by Astronaut [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kw40e8yOZDU]
When The Music Stops by Ain't Nuttin But Music [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gb2LKGLOAzw]
Hooligans by Girl Can't Dance [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EqQNhxGpTdY]
Dancin in the Rain by Soul Amazing [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jq-crVkXcaw]
We On by Daydreamin (Lupe Fiasco) [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0GQjYPWDcmg]
Thug Mansion by Life Goes On [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gm7AuWOFTf8]
Nosebleed Section by Breathe [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SQBYdPl0_6k]
I used to be heavily into the Aftermath label too, Em brought me into rap, from there I found Dre, 2pac, D12 etc. From 2pac I learnt about east/west, and as I was getting bored of all the violence, I found Lupe Fiasco.

The problem is that when people hear "rap and metal", they think Linkin Park (or worse yet, they switch off at "rap" and think "rap is guns bitches and bling". It ain't, 6 of the 10 tracks I just posted prove that. The whole "look at mah money" thing is over played as well, underground is the way forward. Now, I'm going to refresh the page, I bet this has come up at least once. Oh, and either "throw away the rapper" or "retards attempting poetry" will have been used at least once.

I dare any creature with a soul to not find that somewhat emotional.
Well, let's just say that I possess a soul just as much as you do (interpret that as you wish), and it doesn't move me in the slightest.

OT: I find it difficult to name any "top" ten rap songs...

I'm just gonna add, whilst I'm not a fan of top 10's, if I were to make one, this song would have to be in there.

You need Afu-Ra's Equality because it's simply the best thing ever.

And I suggest fitting

on your list as well.

Dammit, most of you stole mine. Ah well, I still have a couple~

Classic. On many lists for a good reason, and the song which I bring into discussion whenever hip hop is brought up.

One of the most surprisingly sad songs out there.

Couldn't agree with you more. There seems to be a shroud of ignorance over hip hop with a lot of people thinking all it consists of is 'gangsta rap', but artists like DJShadow, Flying Lotus, Prefuse 73, Blockhead etc really show how diverse the genre can be.

I mean, rap is more a vocal style than a genre, so to show this diversity within Hip Hop and maybe give your friends a better perspective I think you should throw in one or two alternative Hip Hop artists onto that list, OP.

You actually made me realize that it might be worthwhile for the OP to focus more on getting his friends to accept hip-hop, and then move on to rap (that's more or less what happened to me: I listened to more and more instrumental stuff by DJs like Shadow, and eventually I found myself with one, then two, and then a steady stream of rap songs in my library). To that end, here are a few instrumental--or at least non-rap vocal--hip-hop songs for the OP to try out.

Between the Lines by Bonobo feat. Bajka

The Garden by Cut Chemist

Big City Lover by DJ Krush

Building Steam With a Grain of Salt by DJ Shadow

Bollywood Babies by DJ Signify

Jazzhole by Free the Robots

Bloodstain by UNKLE

Rabbit in Your Headlights by UNKLE feat. Thom Yorke

There's a lot more that I could give you (and I probably will later), but this will do for now.

As a metal head through and through, with a limited exposure to rap, from what I have heard, I can not imagine a top ten of rap songs that doesn't include
<youtube=kG_qcud1ShM>
The beat just will never be beaten, its far too epic.

This thread is just gonna turn into another "rap isn't music" thread. The majority of people on here associate rap with people like Kanye West and Lil' Wayne, and base their opinion on rap from people like that, so discussion value never goes beyond the uneducated statements of "all rap is crap" and "white rappers wanna be black derp". I can understand if you don't like rap and don't wish to know anything about it, but don't get your opinions off Google.

I've said it before in a different thread, if you're knowledge of rap doesn't go beyond Kanye West, shut the fuck up.

OT: I disagree with the list, there are better artists than the ones you posted, and I feel more worthy candidates of going into a top 10 list.
I totally agree. If anyone made a statement such as this.

ALL METAL IS ANGRY WHITE BOYS SCREAMING INTO A MICROPHONE. NO TALENT AT ALL INVOLVED!

I agree whole-heartedly with both of your posts. I have just one thing to add to it.

As gamers, do y'all hate it when people who have never played a video game in their life take up a personal crusade against games? Doesn't it bother you when they say all games are just overly violent crime simulators, turning people into future serial killers? Doesn't it hurt you when they say games have no artistic value? Don't you hate it when ignorant people make sweeping generalizations about games when they have no personal experience with games to base their opinions on? I know I do, and the same can be said about rap.

So, don't do this with rap. Respect other people's tastes. No one is forcing you to listen to rap or to like it. We rap fans simply ask that you do not make malicious, uninformed comments about something that we enjoy.

True rap is not Lil Wayne bragging about how he shot some punk and slapped some *****. True rap is this:

Huh. I always thought they were the same person. What I mean is that I always knew there was this rapper who called himself something with ice. So when I heard the name "Vanilla Ice" I though Ah, so that's his name and when I heard the name "Ice-T" I though the same thing.
Ice-cube would like a little word with you...

No Public Enemy on the list? That's a shame.

P.E.- Black Steel in the Hour of Chaos, oh it mentions guns but not in a gangsta way more in Malcolm X way
Eric B. and Rakim, already mentioned, but I would have gone with- Paid in Full
Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five- The Message, a classic
Missy Elliot- Get your Freak On, rap doesn't have to totally serious, I like me some M.E.
MIA- Paper Planes, this is some catchy stuff and none too serious
Dizzee Rascal- Sirens, No bitches and bling in the UK
Beastie Boys- Sabotage, I can't go past Sabotage
Afrika Bambaataa- Planet Rock another classic to go with The Message.
Gil Scott-Heron- The Revolution Will Not Be Televised, awesome proto-rap.
Mos Def- Auditorium, umm just cos for this one.
edit: De La Soul, while my favorite track is A Roller Skating Jam Named Saturday's for an all time classic it would have to be Me Myself and I

EDIT: I completely forgot De La Soul and that is unforgivable, so I'll bump Dizzee, (Sorry Diz) for De La Soul.
