God this was a really tough list for me. This decade was while really shitty in terms of mainstream music (yeah yeah, broken record, everybody says that about every decade), on the underground level there was a lot of cool stuff happening. Punk got out of it's 90s California slump and gained its sexyness and androgyny back (nevermind that whole unfortunate radio punk thing, ack). Folk also has of late made a strong comeback.
Gyah I'm sorry folks I can't stop at five. It was a pretty good decade all in all.
Leeds United- Amanda Palmer

So yeah, the decade wasn't entirely bad in the mainstream music category. The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The White Stripes, The Fratellis, a few more I can't think of. All good radio pop informed by punk in some way shape or form. Outside of that MCR put out an amazing album (yeah what), The Black Parade, and Muse put out some pretty epic stuff. All in all a better musical decade all around than the 90s. Grunge blew, 90s punk was weak and flaccid, and in general the pop music of the decade was uninspired.
