Of the ones I played...

5) Faster than Light: RNG bullshit.
4) Xcom Enemy Unknown: Broken RNG bullshit.
3) Thirty Flights of Loving: Pretentious bullshit.
2) Resident Evil 6: Pure bullshit.
1) Diablo 3: Pre-alpha bullshit.

Pleasant surprises of the year:

Path of Exile: Lots of potential with some more work.
Mark of the Ninja: Boner.
WoW Mists of Pandaria: Rock solid. Would have been near perfect with less dailies.

You should probably call this "Top 5 most Underwhelming games of 2012" because hardly any of these games most people are mentioning here are "bad". A BAD GAME is something around the lines of AMY.

Honorable mention goes to Sonic '06, because Game Grumps. Just WATCHING that game in motion, not even playing it made me want to punch the wall. Sonic Team should be reprimaded harshly for releasing such an insult to the public.

[HEADING=1]#5[/HEADING]
[HEADING=2]The War Z[/HEADING]

Don't need to spend much time on this one. Essentially a hackjob and the developers should have their arses sued off them by anyone who is still waiting to get their money back.

[HEADING=1]#4[/HEADING]
[HEADING=2]Diablo 3[/HEADING]

What can I say that hasn't already been said, such an atrocious turnout. It is a shame too, because its core mechanics as a game are really good. Just the Auction House and all the errors post launch completely destroyed the games playability. This was only the second game I've bought from Blizzard and will probably be the last. A complete "Fuck you" to their fanbase.

[HEADING=1]#3[/HEADING]
[HEADING=2]Halo 4[/HEADING]

People will see this as an interesting choice and I wouldn't blame them. Halo 4's single player was amazing, let me make that clear. I loved it. The multiplayer however, was a different story. As an Australian, the whole experience was comprehensively ruined by horrendous networking issues. 343's automatic local search was just broken and I gave up after 3 weeks of waiting for matchmaking to stabilize. Very disappointed.

[HEADING=1]#2[/HEADING]
[HEADING=2]Steel Battalion[/HEADING]

When you want to demonstrate to someone how and why the Kinect is a useless piece of shit, this is the game you show them. Jim Sterling explains far more eloquently then I can what is wrong with this game. It is broken and unplayable. Capcom had their heads up their arses.

[HEADING=1]#1[/HEADING]
[HEADING=2]Sonic Adventure 2 HD[/HEADING]

*sigh* Sonic Team, give up. Just give up please. Your best days are behind you and now all you deserve is a shotgun shell to the cranium.
I pretty much agree with everything on this list. Though mine would leave out Halo 4 as having never played it or watched a review I have no opinion on it. I would throw in revelations 2012 though, as it is a huge pile of trash that physically hurts to watch.

This is more like "Top 5 most disappointing games of 2012," like Angry Joe's list of unwarranted mediocrity.

Lets see: Assassin's Creed 3
Darksiders 2
All licensed Games from TV shows/movies (except the Walking Dead
Borderlands 2 (Handsome Jack was pretty much the best the game had to offer, otherwise after beating it, THERE IS NOTHING ELSE TO DO!)
and finally: Neverdead, Steel Battalion, Medal of Honor Warfighter, and 007 Legends (Never bought it, but literally laughed my ass of watching someone play it.)

Also whats with all the Dark Souls hate, PC players wanted it ported and the game was exactly what it was advertised to be...

Well...

There was a thread that did something similar...

And after 273 posts I tallied up the results, for Shits, Giggles (and because I'm insane).

From this unscientific tabulation we have the top 5 worst games of 2012! (as decided by members of the Escapist who posted games in this thread)

1: Mass Effect 3 with nearly double the votes of its nearest rival.
2: Assassin's Creed 3
3: Resident Evil 6
4: Diablo 3
5: Medal of Honor: Warfighter
The irony here is that people most vocally ***** about the memorable games, games that weren't as good as their prequels, and the ones they held the highest hopes for.
Assassin's Creed 3 and Diablo 3, for example, may get a lot of people bitching and whining about them, but they are genuinely, demonstrably better than 99% of games that came out this year, and if not for their predecessors being vastly better, they'd be regarded as brilliant and amazing games.

Goddammit, Mass Effect 3 was good. The ending sucked, but I still don't think it deserves the bottom five.
I second this.

OT:

Now, this is REALLY hard for me cuz I generally only bought games I knew I wanted/would like and the ones I didn't were preowned from last year so I've had to do some digging... Also I liked AC3, ME3 and all the other popular choices...

Number 1. Risen 2

Got the XboX version and... I don't hate it but it's just so boring. The dialogue isn't funny or memorable and I just generally can't be pissed...

2. They Bleed Pixels

Fuck me. Maybe it was cuz I don't have a game pad for my PC but this was a load of rubbish with shit controls that would throw a hissy fit if I didn't play it in windowed mode.

3. Home

£2.99? Well... Got what I paid for...

4. Orion Dino Beatdown

Maybe the updates have fixed it but it was fucking broken last time I played it...

5. Halo 4

Ha! Not really of course, I loved that game! No actually... Um... Slender?

Game? No.
Scary? No.
Fun? No.
Tedious and boring? Yes.

One could say the same for Dragon Age II.

1. The Old Republic - This game looked amazing. It had a lot going for it: a great IP, a great developer, a huge budget... what the hell happened? The story is great. The combat is actually kind of interesting and fun. But... why is the world so lifeless? Why are the raids SO similar (yet worse) to WoW? Why were there so many problems with input lag at launch? This game had a lot of potential and it wins my 'Worst Game of 2012' award because it squandered all of that potential.

2. Diablo 3 - This isn't a bad game, but it's short, incredibly repetitive (to be expected), and very shallow compared to previous Diablo games. By simplifying the item system so much, they removed the heart and soul of the Diablo series. Plus there was the whole Inferno debacle at launch.

3. Medal of Honor: Warfighter - This game is a pile of shit. Plus it's buggy. Shit + buggy = terrible game.

4. Black Ops 2 - The only reason this is here is because I only bought a handful of games this year. It's actually not bad, although there are GLARING issues that must be addressed before it's a good game, mostly involving lag compensation and connection issues. It's a hell of a lot better than Black Ops and MW3 at least.

Balderdash. I'm getting so, so tired of this "ME3 was perfect right up until the ending!" revisionist history. Not only is it bizarrely forgiving of screwing up the most important part of any narrative, it also hand waves numerous issues that preceded the ending and were discussed at length when the game was still fresh in everyone's minds.
I've taken plenty of shots at the story so I'll leave that alone. Gameplay really should be another issue when attacking Mass Effect 3. It's just so painfully average with its small, closed-in shooting galleries. Also, I played it on Hardcore and it was a damn cakewalk. I found myself charging into battle doing stupid things and punching enemies just to "mix it up," and if I took some serious damage I would drop into cover and play it "for realsies" for a few minutes. The only difficult fight was the very last one because of the infinitely spawning enemies. All of the upgrades and RPG elements don't amount to much when there is no challenge to overcome with your careful stat management. I refused to take it up to Insanity because I planned on doing that on my second playthough, well surprise, the story was so terrible that a second playthrough isn't going to happen.

Contrast that with Borderlands 2. I'm about level 17 and I've already had about a dozen skin-of-my-teeth moments where I needed all of my assets and just barely scraped by. Waiting for the fast travel to the newly airborne Sanctuary to come online was balls-to-the-walls insanity.

Just to add some ammo (I have a lot to hate about Mass Effect 3 despite it actually being my #5 game of the year. A couple weeks ago I tried to play it (on the 360), but the EA servers were down. I couldn't get past a "checking for downloadable content" notification. So I went back to the dashboard, disconnected from XBOX live and tried again. Upon trying to resume my game, I was told that I would not be able to save offline. So it appears the game is nearly unplayable offline. That might be the worst thing about this game, and no one talks about it.
EA's horseshit is another issue altogether, but it doesn't matter because the gaming community at-large just bends over and asks for more. I had problems with Dragon Age: Origins a few times because my cable went out and EA didn't have any hands in the development of that, but they bought Bioware late into the development so they were able to get their FOUL FUCKING STINK into final product.

You know what Bioware game never had a problem even when my internet connection was down, EVEN WITH THE DLC?
Mass Effect, and it was published by Microsoft. What's that say to you?
EA is a bigger bunch of cunts than Microsoft.

I remember when I couldn't get Origins to work I figured I would get back to my third run of Mass Effect (before 3 ruined it) and it worked just fine, and that's when I knew that EA was going to ruin this shit.

Therefore my vote goes to Mass Effect 3

And some will try to convince you that Mass Effect 3 combat was actually good.
But heres a quick fact: 5 contradictory actions tied to one button is atrocious design.
When all the facts are said and done, Far Cry 3 falls into bad design territory when the game outright restricts you from running and reloading at the same time and instead uses this basic mechanic in shooters as a way of providing artificial length to a game that already suffers from a myriad of other design issues.

You want a good sandbox?
Pick up Sleeping Dogs.
You want a good shooter with a semi open world thats much more organically designed?
Play Borderlands 2.

Far Cry 3 is inept.

People only hate ME3 because of the endings. But as an Escapist columnist already stated in one of their top 5's... the game itSELF is actually great.
No they don't. At least not all of them do. The game has plenty of other reasons for me to hate it, ranging from incredibly lazy writing to arbitrary gameplay mechanics. Unless you've been avoiding every single ME hate thread in the universe, you probably know quite a few of them.

2.) Borderlands 2

Unbelievably boring, extremely poor balancing and had some of the most obnoxious, meme-filled writing I've ever seen in a game.

1.) Revelations 2012

This requires no description, it's hate at first sight. The devs didn't give a shit, so I'm not going to bother writing a description.

I can't think of any games I've played this year which were genuinely terrible. Absolutely fucking nothing caught my interest this year, nothing. Those are actually two of the like six games I played that actually came out this year. The rest were passable indie affairs. 2012 was a really horrible year for video games if I end up finding myself unable to complete a top 5 of either best or worst because fuck all actually looked interesting enough to warrant playing.

I could start picking on games I've not played at which point I'd toss Mass Effect 3, Silent Hill HD collection and the newest CoD installment on there for the sake of just padding the list with predictable and well-known awfulness.

I think it's funny people are saying ME3 is the worst. I'm sure I can find 5 games that are barely even play playable.

Borderlands 2.
Actually there is a perk that lets you do just that, you can reload and sprint at the same time, along with alot of other things that shooters will not let you do, also Sleeping Dogs is s great game, just faced a few design issues and not a strong story, which Farcry 3 dosen't have that much either, but is full of great and vivid characters. (Buck and Vaas are simply amazing).
Also had some issues with Borderlands 2, such as an impassable glitch, along with the fact that I finished all side quests and there was nothing else to do...
Also was pretty much repetetive, "shoot this guy, oh look you got a rare weapon that does exactly what your last gun did except its stronger..." Beautifilly designed, semi-fun after putting over 20 hours into it.

I feel the Dark Souls one was a little harsh. They only ported it because the community asked for it, and I'm pretty sure I heard before the petition that they didn't wish to release a pc port because they acknowledged they had no experience with that platform. If they got an outside team to do it and that team messed up then it probably deserves to be on the list, but elsewise it feels harsh to penalise a developer for dropping their own reservations to support the desire of the community.
If they knew they were going to make a bad port, then why bother at all?

Out of the games I actually played, I have to say Spec Ops.

Because there's this half-second delay between mouse and cursor movement that made the game unplayable for me. Aiming was a mess because of it. Didn't get into the first level because the aiming was so awkward and clunky.

But that's the fault of the Unreal Engine, not the game itself. Kind of a shame really.

Maybe it controls better on consoles, I don't know.
(purely an observation, not an insult, just getting that out of the way.)

You have by far the worst luck i've ever seen for a pc gamer on here, you must have a bad luck component installed on your mobo, because every time i've seen you have a problem, it's either unique or happens to a very small minority, it's just mind boggling how many problems with games you seem to have. (if you have a 360 controller, it works on spec ops for the pc just fine, although i did it with keyboard and mouse as it felt a bit better to me personally.)

point is, I feel very sorry for your lots.
