While these lists are intended to be personal and there really is no right or wrong answer, I have a general distrust of "Top Five/Top Ten" lists which are heavy on the current-generation titles. It's not that the games themselves are bad, and I've played some pretty remarkable games this generation, but it makes me feel like the list maker's perspective on the gaming world is too narrow to be useful for the rest of us. Great games should be impactful in ways that are independent of their technological limitations and should continue to be relevant long after their market lifecycle. The most recent games are also the most difficult to evaluate because unless your game is undeniably groundbreaking, it's hard to say how history will evaluate its impact and relevance.

With that said:
Persona 2: Eternal Punishment - Superb character design and development, modern setting, and contemporary plot make for a fresh RPG experience.
Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne - Not only is Nocturne's Hard Mode the most challenging RPG I've ever played, it's also among the most anti-cliche.
Super Smash Bros. Melee - Based on sheer amount of time spent with this game on local multiplayer, I can't avoid mentioning Melee. But more than that, it takes a fresh approach to fighting games without compromising the depth of gameplay. Wavedash-to-shieldgrab is too good.
Soul Calibur II - most balanced iteration of a great series
Super Street Fighter II: Turbo - SF invented the combo
DuckTales - Captures the innocence and quality of Nintendo-era platforming
Killer7 - What exactly defines a videogame, anyways?
Metal Gear Solid - Better than a movie
Maniac Mansion - Long live adventure games
Half-Life 2 - The new Metal Gear Solid of interactive storytelling (I wasn't priveleged enough to play the first Half-Life at the height of its relevance)

I'd like to suggest that everyone visit HardcoreGaming101's website. There are a lot of great games to be discovered.

Some games I'd like to mention:
R-Type Final
Bucky O'Hare
Skate
Ikaruga
Metal Slug
Broken Sword: Knights of the Templar
Viewtiful Joe
Resident Evil 4
Shadow of the Colossus
Katamari Damacy

10. Half life 2. One of my favourite Story shooters I love doing it on G-mod with friends too.

9. Legend of Zelda: Twilight princess. One of the few games that I can say im proud to own a Wii for.

8.Sonic Adventure 2: Battle. I loved this game. It wasn't perfect, but it was very fun.

7. Halo 3. The game is an FPS, and in that regard, it does the job well. Sure it wasnt better than the others but hell, loads of players and Forge is pretty awesome.

6. Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker. The game was hated for its looks, but this shows you never judge a book by its cover. This game is a Little gem, but the map is HUGE "Sure its boring to travel, but atleast it shows that you're in a big enviroment".

5. Final Fantasy XII. This game was a good mix of Realtime and turn based strategy. Quite entertaining, quite hard.

4. Tales of Symphonia. Awesome, just awesome.

3. Tales of Vesperia. didnt really like the story towards the end kind of emo. Awesome gameplay though.

2. Kingdom Hearts. The game was good, the story was OK and the characters were pretty bad, but gameplay is all that matters, right? RIGHT?

1. Dark chronicle. (Dark cloud 2) This game was AWESOME. Its very polished off, and gives a cozy feel while playing it. The voice actors were good, and the gameplay was smooth. The story was interesting too. I spent about 200 hours on this game, plus about 50 from other saves. AWESOME.

Ok...lets see...

Saints Row 2: Blowing up people on the highway with an attack chopper never gets old.
Left 4 Dead: Ripping out people's unsuspecting nipples is oohhh soooo satisfying-creepingly.
Half Life: Opposing Force: Old Skool, biatch.
COD 4: Modern Warfare: Nice to see the Call of Duty band wagon got out of the WW2 ditch.
H.A.W.X.: Anyone can feel like a bad-ass pilot.
Halo 3: Forge is fun, and no scoping someone is such a nice feeling.
Portal: Funny, brain teaser.
Half-Life 2 Series: Good FPS, but there all just too damn short! The originals had like, what, 9 chapters?(All of which went on forever)
Counter Strike: Source: Uh...bang?
Mech Warrior 5: I dunno...I loved it when i was younger.
