I am aware that playing lands in Magic is not completely mindless, I was only extrapolating a bit. I have experience with both Khalni garden, Piranha marsh, and numerous other lands that enter the battlefield tapped (I did mention Eye of Ugin in my previous post).
Fair enough. Like I said, it really comes down to the skill level of everyone involved. Maybe Duel Masters really is that much more strategic than Magic, but I'd like to see what your opinion is after joining an established group. It's too bad I can't show you my group...
You know, I have considered starting playing, but I just can't get myself to spend my money on it. (I don't know how prices are where you live, but here - from what I hear - a single booster pack costs approximately 7.5 USD.)

I would totally play you! What was your deck build? I have no one to play with either.

EDIT: I had two main deck builds I used.

I enjoyed playing M:TG. But I have no one to play with anymore. The only place I know of is a cards and comic shop around here and I don't feel like playing with a bunch of elementry school kids.

I used to love playing Yu-Gi-Oh and got pretty damn good at it. I had a deck that, if used right, would annihilate pretty much anything or anyone it came across. Black Skull Dragon shows people where to get off.

And a friend of mine just got me into Magic the Gathering, I now have an Island/Swamp deck. Death/destruction/deceit? Me likey very much. Now I just need to find locals to play against.

I also have well over 2000 Pokemon cards, but never really played that. It was more for the collection/trading/awesomeness of it all.

And I've never heard of Duel Masters so I can't really answer that question.

Holy cow, what country are you in? In the US, the most you'll pay for a booster pack is about $4, unless it's A.)heavily in demand and B.)so old that almost all of the existing packs have already been opened. If you can find a decent card shop, you can often find older packs for $3 or less. Even if all you have access to is a walmart, they have packs that contain a booster and 30 random cards for all of $5. If you're just starting out, you can get a preconstructed deck for $10-$15, and then build your collection from there.

Basically, it can be expensive, but it doesn't have to be. I haven't spent more then 10$ on the game in the last few years, and the only reason I've spent that much is because the latest set is overpowered to the point that my old cards can't keep up. Regardless, $7.50 for a 15 card booster is highway robbery, and roughly twice MSRP.

Norway. Taxes are high here, and since there are only 4.5 million people living in an area of 148,746 square miles or 385,252 square kilometres (a population density of 31 people per square mile, or 12.5 people per square kilometre) it is really hard for stores to sell such a niche-product without having the prices skyrocket.

I've played one game of Magic and it was pretty awesome. I kind of wish Yugioh hadn't taken hold over my school way back then so maybe I would have gotten into Magic. Ohwell. I played a few pokemon battles and that was... okay. Pretty much the order that I mentioned them is the order that I prefer them.

Never heard of the other one you brought up.

If you want to play, I bet you can just use Ebay to get the cards and Skype to find people to play. Have you found any forums or otehr communities around? Look.

I see then. Are you going by the prices in a dedicated comics/games shop, or are you going by what they charge at the local bookstore? Because the bookstores and the big box stores gouge on the prices of boosters no matter where you are. Otherwise, you may be able to do better ordering online, but it'll still be more expensive than it is in the U.S.. There's also Magic Workstation, which is a free online version of the game -- but I can't speak for its quality, because the only version I've ever played is the paper version.

I used to collect Pokemon cards. Never played the card game. Why? No one played the Pokemon Trading Card Game. Ever. It was the unwritten rule.

I then played Yu-Gi-Oh when it first came out. Had some fun.

The only remnant of my card collecting days are shoebox of mismatched cards somebody gave me and a Team Rocket's Snorlax card stashed away in my Kingdom Hearts case.

This, I spent hundreds of dollar/hours putting these together, then it fell out and I was left with hundreds of cards and empty feeling inside...*sob*

According to wikipedia there are two major Duel masters forums, where they try to translate all the Japanese cards, since all the new editions are in Japanese.
It would be a lot of work if I were to go thrugh with it, I think.

Recently got hooked on MtG by a couple buddies, just got finished building 4 starter decks and I've gotten pretty good with a green elf-focused deck.

You guys should check out YVD. It's a free program, you can build your deck and then duel against people online. And you can find matches against people on IRC. It's pretty good, although it's all manual, so you have to click to shuffle, click to draw etc. Pretty good though.

I have never played MtG, I hear the rules are very complex though.I like Yu-Gi-Oh. I wish I could use YVD, but since I moved to Linux, I can't. Shame that the 2010 Yugioh game has shoehorned some weird story into it.

I live in a town with about 200,000 inhabitants. The only store (I think) that sells Magic cards in this city is a dedicated, eh... Geek-store? This store is just about the only place in town where you can find manga, anime, figurines and all those fantasy/sci-fi books with the small fanbases. I do not think regular bookstores carry trading cards (except for those times when there is a fad going around).

i stopped playing Yu-Gi-Oh! when after building a deck to win on turn one, everyone else accused me of net-decking. BTW, they only thought this because they were net-deckers themselves, and saw a deck online that resembled my own.

I play a lot of TCG's and by far I think MTG is the most strategic. I don't know what kind of decks your friend is using but If you are merely just playing the cards in you hand with no synergy he probably just has some really basic decks.
Or he's using Jund (in-joke ftl)

OT: I do play semi-competitive magic. I go to Friday night magic most fridays, and I have gone to the occasional 5k (a large tournament where 1st place get $5,000).

I really enjoy the game and the deep strategy in playing and deck building, but it's not perfect. The best cards in any particular format can cost a bit much. Then again, there's always drafting.

TCG's would be good were it not for the whole 'trading' bit. I just don't feel like spending that much for cards, or trading them all the time. Spectromancer wasn't bad though.
