Try the 5-7 million people who bought XIII and Square Enix would say yes. Those kind of numbers just don't lie that the game was popular, even with all the negative feedback (which they're listening to)
People just don't seem to realise that XIII-2 and Vs XIII are made by different teams. Vs XIII is being made by the Kingdom Hearts team and XIII-2 is being made by those who made XIII.
There was a LOT of mythos and story of the worlds of Cocoon and Pulse still left to be told in XIII, and that was one thing that I hoped to learn more of as I finished XIII. I'm glad they are making a sequel, and y'know this is in the same 'universe' as Vs XIII and so the whole 'The Maker' and 'Goddess Etro' ties in very closely to vs XIII.
Don't believe me? Go and watch one of the gameplay trailers of Vs XIII and they will talk about the Goddess of Death (i.e. where they get their magic from in that game) and that is Goddess Etro... the same Goddess Etro who Lightning serves in XIII-2.
Holy crap, someone who is smart on The Escapist forum? I AM AMAZE. You, sir, get unlimited amounts of internet and win. Use them wisely!
Also, by "universe", it's mainly just the whole l'Cie/fal'Cie/Eidolon/Goddess Etro stuff, as you mentioned. Versus XIII isn't set anywhere near Cocoon or Pulse, it just uses a bunch of similar lore.
I'm sure that's what you meant and all, but just sayin'~!
I've read through your impressive quadruple post, and I take it by 'smart' you mean someone who shares your point of view and doesn't think 13 was an uninteresting turd and who thinks that Final Fantasy hasn't been ran into the fucking ground?
Whatever man.
If you cool kids are so much more on the ball then the rest of us, riddle me this. If FF13 began development in 2004, and the first E3 details were released in 2006, and the game wasn't actually released in Japan until 3
years later, then how was 13-2 cranked out in about a year?
Now while you think about that, think about this: Art Director for 13, Isamu Kamikokuryou, has gone on record at FF Reunion that there was enough material removed from FF13 to create a new game(his words). The producer, Yoshinori Kitase, also said that there was DLC prepared, but all talk of that mysteriously disappeared.
So we have a new game appearing in an astonishingly fast time-scale, FF13 having huge chunks of content taken from it, and a supposed DLC pack disappearing. Make what conclusions you will.
