I might have enjoyed 12 if they didn't stick in an incredibly difficult boss a quarter way through the game, and surround you with monsters that give terribly low exp so you can't level yourself out of the situation.
What ? when was FF12 difficult ? (aside from the side missions, and the final boss)
I have no idea what boss you're talking about,
I had to skip on lots of random encounters cause the game was just too easy (as I have to do in most RPGs).

Anyway, I kinda sorta liked ff12 and FF13, urgh, mixed feelings about both, but for the exact opposite reasons.
I liked the game mechanics and everything in 12, but not the story.
And I liked the story in FF13, but not the game mechanics.
(well ok, not entirely opposit; I loved the visual style in both, and I didn't like the characters in either).

Only FF I really like was 10, but the sequel was horrible and I never even bought it or finished it.

Elder Wyrm is a notoriously difficult early-to-mid stage boss in Final Fantasy XII. Some sites say it is skippable if you go about things in a certain way, while others say he's compulsory. Elder Wyrm was the big flower-mushroom dragon that inflicts your party with oil, poison, blindness and something else in one move, then spams fireball until your party are all dead. Not to mention he has ridiculously high health.

^^ Looks good to me. I always liked Sarah - looking forward to her as playable.

Also, looks to be the same combat system. Good. FF 10-2 screwed itself by completely changing one of my favorite FF combat systems for a much less fun one.

I don't. Final Fantasy XIII was a lobotomy on a disc. XII rocked the bridge for me but XIII burned it. I'm not going to be buying any more Final Fantasy games that aren't remakes. I used to love the series, but they just don't have it anymore.
Two bad games=series ruined forever!
Two exceptionally bad games in an otherwise solid to stellar franchise, and no clear indication that they're trying to learn from them. So... yeah, kind of ruined. At the very least extensively soiled. I mean, you think Square-Enix would have learned with X-2. :\

Plus, the whole series isn't ruined, just anything that's not a remake. I'm just not going to look on the Final Fantasy franchise as I once did. It's changed way too much into something I don't like at best and find downright insulting at the worst.

I take it you never tried the Type-0 demo or played any of the handheld games then.

By the way, Final Fantasy II is much worse than XII and XIII.

No idea what you're talking about on the demo, and it depends on what you mean by handhelds. I stopped playing Final Fantasy spin-offs after the atrocious Dirge of Cerberus, and Tactics was okay. Final Fantasy II was bad, but I'd rather play it than XII or XIII any day. Actually though a lot of the remakes fix a lot of the issues it had, so it's become very playable.
