But between the Werehog stages (one in Africa took me like 40 minutes to do), the way you have to unlock the levels with medals, and that godforsaken hellhole that is Eggmanland, a stage I found so horrible, so long and so frustrating that I never finished it, the game as a whole didn't work for me.
Fair enough. I can respect that. I've got a rather high tolerance for frustration, myself--I'm the sort of guy who just WOULD NOT QUIT until I beat the Dark World in Super Meat Boy--so I guess it doesn't bug me as much, but I definitely know where you're coming from, especially with the 40 minute Werehog stages. Oy. They're competent enough, but a lot of them just drag, and it's a pain that the game makes us choke down more time with the Werehog than with Sonic.

It did have one of the greatest opening cutscenes of all time though. If you cut the Werehog bit onwards, that opening could be my favourite piece of Sonic media since Sonic the Movie.
See, I liked it right up through the Werehog bit, for one reason. Robotnik's line: "Sonic! That's a good look for you... Festive!"

Nothing like a cyborb bunny with rocket legs, missiles, arm cannon, shield generators, and super strength pummeling on foes.
You mean a Mary Sue, right? I think you meant to say 'Mary Sue OC created by DIC and with lots of fanart by Archie'.

The American cartoons are never going to be part of the Japanese canon, which is what the games are based on. Get. Over. It.
Actually I get that. And I know and see how the back story in Japan differs from the version created in the States. Difference is culture, what they like and get into and think is fun and cool isn't the same as in the western world. Speaking in large generalities of course some people from both sides like the version on the other end of things. What I'm saying is they made a different version for this side of the world in the show and comics, and people liked it, I'd like and think it would go over well if the did the same with one of the games.

Wait, Shadow and Silver are in this? Well there's a chunk of my enthusiasm gone.
At least they're villains so I'll get to hit them.

Consider renting this, the prospect of Perfect Chaos made me a bit more interested, but it'll probably be like most of the modern Sonic's.

Legendary rivals...

...Sega, I don't think Silver really counts under 'legendary', as much as Sonic Team wants to think otherwise. Also, I'm sure the fans will be happier if you don't remind them of Sonic '06.

But then again...I guess the real fans are the ones who buy and enjoy your games, not the ones who whinge about not getting Sonic the Hedgehog 2.5 every time a new Sonic game comes out.
Holy crap an intelligent perspective of a sonic game.

This game looks worse with every passing trailer.

I was excited at first because I really did think it was just running and ring grabbing.
The demo looked quite promising. This trailer has replaced my cautious optimism with Hardened Cynicism tenfold of that prior to playing the demo.
