Everyone always shouts the praises of their favourite games while trashing the favourites of others. I think it would be fun to turn the tables and take a negative look at our own favourite games or series. Let's all take a good hard look at our favourite games, recognize their flaws and then tear them to pieces. Ready? Set. Go!

One of my most recent favourites is the Mass Effect series but holy hell are those elevator segments BORING. Also, wtf is up with having to manually open doors? I know it's not a big deal but how hard is it to make the doors automatically open as I approach them? If my local super market can manage it surely the Citadel can. Also, Ashley and Kaiden have to be some of the most BORING characters in gaming history. Generic human soldiers with no real driving force. Check. Hey, look at all these intergalactic badass aliens. Wow, that's awesome, too bad almost half your squad is boring human soldiers (and a biotic but really, he's a soldier character wise). Also the inventory system, holy fuck, talk about labyrinthine. Also, by the end of the game who bothers to use any tactics when the moded guns shoot bullets that freeze the enemies all the while never over heating. The game gets easier as it goes on rather than more challanging, talk about backwards game design.

Loading.

The elevators were loading screens in disguise, everyone bitched and for ME2 we got even more boring loading screens.

Doors open slowly because the next room is loading behind them.

Baldur's Gate/Baldur's Gate 2 had some unfinished quest lines and storylines. The companions could have had more dialogue. They always can. Also if you start with a party you might as well finish with it due to the experience issues.

It's hard to be a villain due to lousy Reputation system and no discount.

More dialogue options would have been nice.

There are still bugs and glitches in the game. It's very easily broken. And it's not user friendly unless you're a D&D player.

Aquaria is a bland adventure game, somewhat discount-y feeling in the graphics, animations and game play, and sadly deteriorates into just plain old top-down shooter as the story progresses.

Mass Effect is a bland space opera shooter with the very shooter element poorly executed and even though the dialogue is so firmly well made it is not really a part of game play as only one or two encounters can be solved diplomatically instead of violently. Also the sex scenes are sub-par.

The time it takes to load the game whenever you open a door in Half-Life 2 is ridiculous. I can't think of anything else...

Halo has terrible, terrible storytelling. Once you understand it, it's great, but the narrative itself is just crappy.
Agreed entirely. The story itself is actually compelling and well written - just told shoddily! It really rewards the nerds who hang about on Halo wiki but not the casual players who just want some gaming fun....

However I do love Halo with all my heart and do enjoy the story. It's just that damned narratie... and Reach, that was a letdown.

Mass Effect 2 combat is WAAAAY too easy. There's always chest-high walls right before a fight, so no surprises. Health regenerates really quickly so all challenge is gone. And the A.I. still hasn't figured out that if they stick their heads out, I'm going to shoot them!

Btw, awesome topic!

Fallout has terrible weapon balance, several useless-to-near useless skills and is set in far too small an area with not enough locations to explore.

Samurai Warriors 2: Needed more button mashing in my opinion...no actually I'm going to cheat slightly and insult its expansion (xbox combined the two into one game when you bought the expansion).

The expansion brought in all those characters I hate from KOEI games i.e the take-one-trait-and-exaggerate-it ones. There was a gender ambiguous man who was an attempt to have a confused gay character which failed miserably and was mildly offensive, a girl who could do no damage whatsoever and brought shame to the good female characters by swooning left and right, an overwight man with an annoying voice who just wanted to play Kemari and some cross dressing bloke that used a sitar as a weapon.

Planescape: Torment has a clunky interface and terrible party A.I. Also, the combat simply isn't fun, no matter what class you play as. Which is bad as it becomes increasing common as the game goes on.

Okami is far, far too easy. Extra health is easy to get, health orbs and items are in abundance, and the enemies just aren't hard to beat.

Resident Evil 4 has an abundance of useless weapons and a few overpowered ones. The game gives you no real reason to use any weapons other than the best of each category (and the game is structured as such that you really don't have to until they are handed to you). This makes every playthrough of the game feel very similar, as there isn't much room to mess around. Also, the PS2 version only uses the default costume in cutscenes. Its a small thing, but kind of annoying considering the Gamecube let the alts be used.

Bioshock has the worst ending ever. Also, taking pictures during combat is horrible. There are some pretty useless plasmids too. Grr, I'm angry.
Oh yeah, and something about the mini-game or other...

I really didn't mind the elevator loading screens, as it was better than an actual loading screen between Citadel levels since it made it feel like a part of the game. But I really do hate having to manually open doors.

As for original ideas, I hate the fact that Shepard has the WORST aim ever when using a sniper rifle. Is he/she always hyped up on something that makes him unable to stand still long enough to get a shot off? And FORGET IT if you are trying to snipe a moving target.

Maybe it was just my copy of the game, but did anyone else notice Ashley's right eye? Something is seriously wrong with that thing! It's always looks half closed and it looks like it's looking at something different than the left one.
