this got me thinking after watching the news last night, Now this situation dosnt only apply to the miltary, stuff like this happens in day to day life as well

I think it was at some Australian airforce training place, an 18 year old girl had sex with a guy In his room or what ever, it was consentual and everything, HOWEVER aparently he had set up a webcam and I think skyped it live to a bunch of other guys in another room obviously you can guess the fallout that happened afterwards

Now personally I think that was horrible, I mean you trust somone and then they go do somthing like that which as we all know is incredibly harmful, and the wrost part is when somthign liek that happens its usually the girl who gets the bad rep and suffers where as for the guy its all fine..usually

anyway she said she was sticking to her military path, good for her

so yeah I guess my point is Ive herd horror storys about womens treatment in the military, from stuff liek this to even worse

so why is this? Im think its because military is one of the few areas where there was never many women and I supose the atmosphere is very machoist and everything

Well, not only does the disproportionate ratio between men and women create a 'manly man[footnote]Sexually driven, concerned more with physical power than wit and intelligence. You know, root and brute, rather than love and cherish[/footnote]' atmosphere, but that atmosphere promotes new recruits to have that 'manly man' mentality.

BIG DISCLAIMER: I'm not saying everyone in the military is like this, and I'm trying very hard to be hyperbolic about this whole thing. As it is, the people I know who've joined the military are some of the best people I've ever known.

First, it is spelled like not liek.

And yeah, shit like that is going to happen any where that has a bunch of young dudes grouped together. Be it the military, gangs, frat houses, or what ever. I don't know what you can do the change the male psyche to treat women as sexual objects.

An ex of mine, a German-born woman who joined the USMC, is the toughest and most intense person I know, and she gave up a scholarship to her art school of choice to join the marines. She had her own horror stories last I checked, but they involved more of her accent and background than her gender, seeing as she strapped down her breasts and shaved her head and most of her eyelashes to make herself look more masculine. (Too bad she's a drop-dead gorgeous babe...I saw her 'after' pic and she barely looked different.)

Long story short, she's been called 'Nazi-*****' and stuff like that a couple times. Each incident ended with her breaking some guy's nose via headbutt or left hook.

That specific example has little to do with the military, that kind of shit happens everywhere. Can't comment otherwise, no true knowledge beyond NCIS

The military is an "old boys club" - although that is changing (four star female general for the win) the culture takes longer to adjust.

I mean, technically, aren't women in the US military still forbidden from engaging in actual combat?

As degrading as that sounds toward the female she probably should have just kept to her professional discipline and held off. I understand that women have hormonal rages just like men but damn it all, you're still just a damn kid.

Also not true. Female US military personnel have expanded to utilize female infantry due to the cultural stigma and custom of the countries we are engaged with. I can't speak for other branches, but every Marine is a rifleman regardless of rank, gender or job. They get the job done Oorah.

You make it sound like the fact that this happened in the military has any relevance to the story. This kinda stuff happens just as much everywhere else.

well yeah I know stuff like this happens all the time outside miltary (I did mention that) I just ment that it was this story in particualar that got me thinking about women in the military even though you could use it as an example in non-military context

Spot on, and sadly there probably is nothing that can be done.

I stand corrected the world needs more of this, it might work.

But a lot of people forget that doesn't mean "Every Marine an 0311."

Women should not be allowed in the U.S. military unless they are also required to sign up for Selective Service like men are required to.
Either that or selective service for men should be abolished. The current system is highly sexist and gives women undue privilege instead of true equality.
Personally I'd prefer no selective service for anyone and true equal treatment.
I like your bravado, but this isn't that kind of thread.

The OP did ask a specific question.

Last I heard females in the USMC "get the job done" in regards to almost every role except combat. As in they're deployed in support roles that don't necessarily entail combat, though they can obviously take part in firefights if they come under attack.

I'm not even American so this is very third hand knowledge and a quick squiz of yahoo answers but I'm pretty sure I'd have heard about it if females were being deployed in every single role that male marines are.

Bravado? Its more striving for equality- it is pertinent in the sense of women wanting to be treated equally in the military and not as sex objects and one step would be to establish true equal treatment.

One of the worst horror stories I heard was about female soldiers dying of dehydration in the Iraq war due to them not drinking enough water because they were afraid to be raped if they used the latrines.

The military code will need to be officially changed and enforced by law before the treatment of women int he military changes. Part of it in my opinion has to do with the military having its own set of rules and thus the troops believe they can behave differently due to their soldier status.
You're right though; machismo does play a role.
I agree 100%

But its kinda off topic. The thread is about how male soldiers treat women comrades around the barracks. Apparently.

Headbutt win! I didn't even know headbutts could hook... OT: Because when you have guns, it's easier to get away with things or at least make it feel that way.
