Exception: Sunstar. That barnshield is amazing.

Minor exception: Arx Novena. A forcefield covering a side passage is surprisingly good on that map.
EDIT: I done goofed. Granted, though as a soldier forcefields go down pretty effortlessly, and what you call the "barnshield", I call the thing-that-perfectly-catches-my-granades-into-a-wonderful-cabin-of-death. Of course it's just rare to see good HoF on a public game.(God knows I can't do it.)

Generator shouldn't be that hard to defend. I play mostly tech now in CTF and you just put the turret down in the corner, and it will at least alert you if someone is coming. Other than that I can everything repaired and people ain't coming in :)
The problem is that way too often it's not just the one tech going down there to defend, and especially when people get fixated on attacking the enemy generator.

Played some of it. I really like how quick paced it is, makes capture the flag alot more interesting. However I find unlocks a bit too slow for my liking unless you spend money, though I guess that's the point. It just a pain when I can't really try a class to see if I'd like to use with without grinding xp on another class.
I think so too, but try the technician and CTF. Focus on repairing and you should get lots of xp to level up faster. I had like 3k xp after I bought the tech and I got to over 14000 in like an hour or two. And now I'm poor again cause I bought the infiltrator.

The vast majority of EXP gains are based on time played. You get a 25% bonus for winnining, and a 25% bonus for having a high score relative to the rest of your team. There's also the 1200 EXP first win of the day bonus and the bonus EXP from the bronze/silver/gold badges.

It's really hard to balance "rewarding people for actually playing the game and not just dicking around" and "not rewarding all the good players for stacking teams", and I think the EXP system that they use is actually pretty good.

Ya I don't think its too bad. Its pretty fair to the point where it doesn't seem like you have to grind forever. I just wish it was a little more clear. Instead of showing just the 4 bars, they should show a chart like:
4 kills +40 xp
2x Repair +20xp
1x air mail +50 xp
2x double kill +200 xp
1x triple kill + 150 xp

Something like that. I think I've figured it out now, but there were some game yesterday when I was doing shit (like 3 kills, 4 assists, and 10 deaths) and was getting like 100-200 xp and some games where I was getting about the same and only breaking 100xp because of bonuses.

Still the tech is nice cause you get like 5-6 repair bronze medals/ fully dead structure, and there are bigger repair challenges. First game I played with the tech I got a lot of bronze and 2 of the repair challenges and made over 1200 exp.

I've been playing the beta for a while now. It's good but I have 1 problem with it.
It's still not fast enough.

I've only done one or two games as a technician. I might have to give it a proper go then, takes awhile adjusting after playing mainly as a pathfinder.

Actually I just did some searching and apparently it doesn't matter. I can't say that the model below is perfect, but it was in a dedicated wiki and seems about right.

Xp earned is calculated (according to the wiki):
Base XP = (Time played in seconds) * 0.5833
Bonus XP = (win or loss[1/0]) * (Base XP * 0.25) + (Base XP * 0.25) / (scoreboard rank)
VIP = (Base XP + Bonus XP) * 0.5
Boost = (Base XP + Bonus XP) * 1.5
+ the bonus 1200 xp for first win of the day.

So it seems like playing CTF and placing well will net you the highest amount. I still say try tech though only because its pretty hard to get a lot of kills consistently (at least for me), but you can easily get about 500 repairing a turret to full and the generator when an infiltrator breaks it. Also badges award xp and you'll be getting that on call badge pretty simply.

I would have recommended buying the Spinfusor for the Soldier. Much easier class and alternate-choice Spinfusors are almost always superior to the stock weapon in that slot.

Kinda, yeah.

The EXP:Gold ratios on classes make unlocking them with gold terribly inefficient. Classes are very EXP-cheap, so there's really no reason to spend gold on them. As far as the 250 free gold goes, the absolute most efficient use of it is to buy a 240 gold weapon like the pathfinder's bolt launcher (more powerful than the light spinfusor but a bit more awkward to aim) or the juggernaut spinfusor grenade (which, when combined with the expensive-but-worth-it light machine gun secondary, makes the juggernaut one of the absolute best duelist classes in the game, and arguably the most versatile class there is).

Incidentally, anyone just starting the game should definitely join in using another player's referal code. Both you and the other player get a bunch of bonus EXP when you hit level six (which doesn't take long at all, trust me). You can get your referal link by going into the game, hitting "social", then "refer a friend". This [https://account.hirezstudios.com/tribesascend/?referral=1299756&utm_campaign=email], for example, is my link.

epic stuff
I've been mostly playing as a Soldier so far (not long), and I've noticed my best role seems to be in defence supporting the HoF*, like sticking put while there's little else to do, but going after mortars and snipers, people going for the gen etc. when they appear. Is this a good sort of strategy, or am I doing it all wrong?

Worth mentioning I'm still using Rifle and Thumper, though I've upgraded them a bit. I feel like they're both a bit underpowered, but at the same time I like the mechanics of them, as in I'd feel like the upgrade to Spin/Pistol would be a different class altogether.

I'd love for this game to have more in the way of tutorials, or at least a good active forum that was based around helping beginners :(

*I do substantially worse when there's no HoF obviously.

Downloading now. I might not play today because it might be too much for my body, I was sick, but I'm looking forward to it.

If you play medium defence, you are an absolute god in my opinion. The doombringer sitting on his flag is a mighty beast, but he can be easily shut down by a sniper sitting on a Katabatic tower plinking away at him with a sniper rifle, or a juggernaut on the east hill mortaring the stand on Raindance. He needs a medium (or someone with a vehicle, maybe) to go and duel those people. Even if you don't succeed in killing them, simply keeping the enemy offence occupied so they can't clear the stand for their capper can be huge.

Soldiers are perhaps "best suited" to outdoor medium defence thanks to their combination of "on-impact" explosives (the thumper or the spinfusor) and bullet weapons (AR or pistol), though they're actually one of the weaker classes in my opinion. Their AR is among the weakest automatics in the game, and the thumper is among the weakest explosives. The spinfusor is much better (it can kill an upgrade sentinel or pathfinder in one direct hit), but the pistol has terrible fall-off. Their AP and frag grenades are good and they have better energy than the other mediums, but they have a lot of trouble fighting raiders (their SMG is really good, and the shield pack makes them more durable than a heavy) and juggernauts who use the light machine gun (they're basically doombringers with mortars and better grenades at that point).

EDIT: And srsly, people about to get in to the game, I can not stress enough that you should use someone's referal code for the EXP bonus. Mine's at the tail end of the last page, and I'm sure anyone else who's posted in this thread would be happy to give you theirs.

Don't feel so bad though the infiltrator is probably the funnest class I've played so far though. Play CTF sneak into the enemy base and troll them at their generator lol.

Just tried it out after noticing this thread. I've never played Tribes before at all, and I guess I'll just say... god DAMN!

As soon as I managed to plug someone with the Scout-ish classes disc-launcher I was hooked. I can tell I have a long way to go but this is absolutely the FPS I've been looking for.

Just a few questions: First, is Hi-Rez planning on putting in voice chat? The game is great as it is, but every match has just been a bunch of people doing their own thing. For CTF voice chat would really help.

Also, what do you guys think of the infiltrator? I liked the description, but didn't see any in action while playing. Which... I guess is the... idea... but still, it sounded cool, but seemed like it might be an odd match for this kind of game. Any thoughts?

I've tried but I can't get past the fucking turrets, the side routes I always get blown away by a juggernaut.

There is no planned integrated voice chat. Hi-Rez said that in their last game everyone just used skype/teamspeak/vent/whatever, anyway.

All players below level six are segregated in their own little area, so it is very rare to see anything beyond the three default classes. There is no real matchmaking beyond that point (unfortunately, in my opinion), so you'll see a lot more variety in classes and equipment after that. Prepare to go from the top of the scoreboard to dead last until you adjust.

Not that the scoreboard is too relevant, anyway. I'd much rather have a pathfinder teammate who ends the game with 3000 points, 1 kill, a few assists, and a billion deaths because he focused on chasing enemy cappers and retrieving the flag than I would someone with 20,000 points and 20 kills who deathmatched all game long.

If you play an infiltrator, you... really shouldn't be getting targeted by turrets or jugs. Unless there's a raider or a sentinel using a jammer, you get hit by a lucky shot, you run out of energy, or you fire your weapon, you are invisible. I mean, so long as you're actually using your pack. It's not a passive one like the soldier pack; you have to activate it (default key "C") to turn it on and deactivate it to regenerate energy.

I've had some luck with this strategy. When you spawn point yourself in the location of the enemy base and just try to get there (short of a guaranteed kill nothing else matters). You'll usually spawn high so once your oriented jump off and start skiing. Just keep skiing until you can see the base. You wanna be hitting 100+ when entering the base (this should make the turrets miss you). As soon as you get into range pop your invisibility (even without upgrades it doesn't drain that fast unless your using your jetpack). Try to avoid using your jetpack, even if your gonna ski up a hill because if your invisibility ends before you get into cover you're pretty much dead, so its better to take a small hill skiing and let your momentum carry you (also shoot for the side entrances if you can since there is usually less people around them). Stop as soon as you get into the base (don't go too far in or you'll likely meet defenders). Break line of site with the turrets (there's usually like a small wall or corner you can hide behind) and let your energy recharge. Pup invisibility again and jump into the generator room. Make sure no one is there before you take off invisibility. If someone is there get and they're alone and either a medium or a light get in close and either melee or stick them with a mine and a couple shots. If there are a couple people together start with the mine and try to place it in such a way you'll hit both of them. Once its clear kill the generator with the pistol (or smg whichever one you dislike and don't use in regular fights). Now the trick is to get out of sight (somewhere in a corner or a little nook) and keep an eye out for any enemies. Don't cloak while doing this, or you'll run outta energy. As soon as you see an enemy cloak, and assess to see if they came alone, then proceed to kill and go back to hiding. If its a tech coming to repair the generator, let him start the repairs since its very easy to sneak up on them then.

Funnest class I played so far, and tied with the tech for my fav. I would really only recommend taking it on CTF though. IMO your job as the infiltrator is basically to just make the enemy's job of protecting their base a living hell by killing any support they might have. Reminds me of the infiltrator from KZ3 and what I used to do with him.

Thanks for the tips. I didn't even know the class had a cloak, I was just jetpacking around trying to drop in on unsuspecting enemies. I'm used to shooters like CoD where there isn't any strategy.
